Feet of Clay
Feet of Clay | Terry Pratchett
It's murder in Discworld! -- which ordinarily is no big deal. But what bothers Watch Commander Sir Sam Vimes is that the unusual deaths of three elderly Ankh-Morporkians do not bear the clean, efficient marks of the Assassins' Guild. An apparent lack of any motive is also quite troubling. All Vimes has are some tracks of white clay and more of those bothersome "clue" things that only serve to muck up an investigation. The anger of a fearful populace is already being dangerously channeled toward the city's small community of golems -- the mindless, absurdly industrious creatures of baked clay who can occasionally be found toiling in the city's factories. And certain highly placed personages are using the unrest as an excuse to resurrect a monarchy -- which would be bad enough even if the "king" they were grooming wasn't as empty-headed as your typical animated pottery.

A marvelous reread. Despite this being the third time I've read the book, I still didn't recall the source of the poison until near the reveal, which definitely adds to the experience. This book in particular does a good job of balancing the amount we're focused on Vimes investigating versus Carrot pursuing his own leads, as well as giving room for Cheery/Cheri to develop both as an individual and 1/?

Robotswithpersonality 2/? in her relationship to Angua, who herself is working some things out. We get a rare split of the double act that is Fred and Nobby, who continue to act like themselves even as they are 'dropped into' new experiences. 😉 The commentary facilitated by the golems' plight is sharp and emotionally appealing. Always happy to see a new member join the Watch. ☺️ The commentary touched on by Cheri's changes in wardrobe I believe are more fully 6d
Robotswithpersonality 3/3 developed in the Fifth Elephant, which is my next stop in my reread of the City Watch collection in the Discworld books.

Even better the second time around. The gender feels! Vimes coming into focus as the Vimes I know and love in later books. It's actually easier to meditate on everything Pratchett is saying with the golem and the diversifying Watchmen staff when I'm not distracted trying to figure out how all the threads of the mystery are tied together - even though it was still fun watching them unravel. So happy I now own a (pretty!) copy for future rereads.

The eternally entertaining cynicism of the populace/the author being fully aware of how crappy the city is, in its own uniquely special ways! A Discworld classic. 👌🏻

A fun Discworld story about the City Watch investigating murders thought to be committed by a golem. Pratchett's exposes how the wealthy and powerful treat minorities and outsiders in his usual hilarious way.

This was my 4th and final book finished for the #JubilantJuly readathon. Thanks to @Andrew65 for hosting!

Ah, what a story of a well-meant revolution going wrong because it is used for their purposes by dark forces. At least the Nightwatch ends up with a new recruit who is not to be played with.

Mehso-so

Book 25 of the year

Not one of my favorite Discworld books. There's nothing particularly wrong with it, just over all kinda Meh. I do appreciate getting to know The Watch better (they are my favorite) and of course it's setting things up nicely for Adora Belle in the future. But just not one of my top picks.

Sadly true...and I think we are seeing more of that in real life lately as some politicians, athletes, etc get tested fast and regularly, but for the rest of us it would be...how‘d she word it “nonsensical” to test people. 🤯

Is it bad that even my fun fiction is making sense in new ways?🤔

Riveted_Reader_Melissa I‘m ALMOST finished with this one, so I‘ll be back later today. So far I‘m really enjoying this one, sometimes the shifting character stories makes it easy for me to put a Discworld novel down for stretches at a time, but this one I‘m just flying through, all the side stories are so fun. 5y

Catherine_Willoughby Need to purchase this one 😔 5y
Soubhiville I loved hearing about how golems are made. I thought the mystery in here was a good one. As always I adore the Night Watch. 5y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Soubhiville I really liked this one too, I think his stories are definitely getting better and better with every book. The wild side stories/tangents are even more connected to the main plot than on the earlier novels. I enjoyed the golem parts, loved seeing Wee Mad Arther‘s beginnings...he shows up way later in a novel I read. I love the Night‘s Watch too. 4y
khooliha It's weird: I really like this book, but now that the discussion post is here, nothing springs to mind to say. Something about this book leaves me off balance. No idea what. Maybe it's the gender stuff? It's not bad at all, but it's pretty surface to my nonbinary and 2020 self, and it sets me vibrating at a frequency this series won't ever reach for. It's a good book! I don't know why I'm so discombobulated! 4y
julesG @khooliha I'm with you, good book but some tiny thing rubbed me the wrong way. Can't say what exactly, either. You might be right with the gender. 4y

Okay, some spoiler thoughts:
1) No one ever asked Dorfl his pronouns, right? Or Cheery? Plus, very minorly, the pronoun usage with the bull pinged my Pronoun Sense
2) I know that Vimes/Vetinari is a ship in the fandom, and I thought about it a lot in their last scene, where I'm certain Vimes kept making Vetinari laugh, and Vetinari watches him go
3) the golem stuff is good

Well, I inhaled this one. Honestly, I'm not sure what to say about it - I have a number of half-formed thoughts that will hopefully coalesce before the discussion. I guess it feels more like a link in a chain than any of the previous books? It's good, I really loved revisiting it. I dunno, my brain is weird tonight.

It's weird that Vetinari's value is presented as maintaining stability, when in my memory he's involved in a lot of the changes in Ankh-Morpork's society. He's certainly not quashed the Watch, and he sets all of Moist's stuff off in the future. Maybe what he's -really- good at is maintaining the appearance of stability...

Iblu Yay! I have actually already started... it‘s a bit lonely here, we‘ve been in lockdown for nearly a week but we are keeping strong #forzaItalia 5y
julesG @Iblu Italy seems to have it under control. Took our federal government(s) ages to come to a solution and bit by bit the states go into lock-down. People are hoarding food and toilet paper like crazy. 5y
Iblu @JulesG it appears to be a common pattern: panic hoarding of cans, pasta and toilet paper. We owe it to the truck drivers, the supermarket guys, the farmers, the food companies etc, they all keep us supplied with fresh food. Our heroes doctors, immense paramedics, brilliant ambulance people and tireless nurses face corona virus everyday, but also our food supply chain people deserve a very warm thank you for their work. (edited) 5y
julesG @Iblu Yes, those people are heroes. I hope the governments and people all around Europe will notice it and thank them. I also hope they will be recompensed and get a pay rise in future, cause most people doing these indispensable jobs are payed low wages. 5y

despite scrambling to finish a semester project and playing through the new Pokemon game, I managed to complete reading Feet of Clay 👍 this was a significant improvement over Men at Arms pacing-wise and also so much funnier 😁 also I love Cheery/Cheri so much, really appreciate having the presence of a gender-nonconforming character who's treated rather well AND plays an important role in the City Watch's functioning.

I didn't realize I was that far behind, truth told. My husband has received a job offer that involves us moving to a new state and I've been listening to Discworld while I paint and pack.

Thumbs up all around for, in order of listening, Feet of Clay, Hogfather, The Last Continent, The Fifth Elephant, The Truth, Thief of Time, and Amazing Maurice and his Educated Rodents.

Golems are essentially statues built by people and given the ability to move and specifically to work by placing a phrase written on paper inside their heads. They are pretty much clay slaves, capable of working nonstop for as long as their clay hold up. But are they people or things? Property or beings?

While Feet of Clay is a funny, silly Discworld adventure, there are some timely humanitarian questions happening in here. Excellent book!
