It's a long time since I read this, my Amelia Peabody rereads tend to be the mid series books (the grown up Ramses, Amelia & Emerson's son, is a lot of fun in those) so I'm grateful to #BakerStreetIrregulars for sending me back to it. It's a proper old fashioned adventure/romance written with great wit & style. The audio performance is excellent too.

CatLass007 I‘m so glad you enjoyed your re-listen. I‘ve never read this series before but I‘m happy to have found a new favorite series. 6mo

I‘ve heard great things about this series for years, so was glad to give it a try for the #BakerStreetIrregulars . I‘m so glad I did! Amelia Peabody is not your typical Victorian woman, and J loved her sarcasm and her views on society. It was also a nice intro to archaeology. I‘ve already purchased book 2! #192025 #1975 #BBRC #YeahBaby #PotCallingTheKettleBlack (Peabody and Emerson are so alike, it‘s like a mirrored image!).

TheAromaofBooks Woohoo!!! I really enjoyed this one. 6mo
dabbe Still can't believe #1975! 🤩😱😂 6mo

Librarybelle I know, @dabbe !! 6mo
CatLass007 @librarybelle @dabbe @thearomaofbooks I‘m so glad everyone is enjoying this new-to-me series. The author‘s real name was Barbara Mertz and in 1952 she earned a PhD in Egyptology. Under her own name she published two books of nonfiction that have never been out of print. She also wrote under the name Barbara Michaels. (edited) 6mo
MemoirsForMe I really need to continue this series. I loved Amelia in this one! 6mo
Librarybelle @CatLass007 I had not realized she wrote nonfiction too. Thanks! 6mo
Librarybelle @UwannaPublishme It was so fun! 6mo

#BakerStreetIrregulars Thank you to everyone who revisited this mystery or read it for the first time with us! I‘ve found a new favourite lady detective! I‘ve put together a few discussion questions but feel free to talk about anything you want below: ⬇️

StayCurious Why do you think people, particularly the British, went crazy over Egyptian artifacts in the 1800s? Do you think that all items that were taken from Egypt over the years should be returned? 6mo
StayCurious Amelia is, no doubt, an early feminist. But having money definitely helps her live the way she wants. Do you think that if she hadn‘t inherited her fortune she would have been as free with her thoughts and so determined to live life her way? How did her upbringing develop her personality? 6mo
StayCurious How do you feel about her relationship with Emerson? Has she indeed met her match? Do you think “succumbing to romance” takes away from her feminist power? Or do you feel there is enough mutual respect between them?

What do you feel about the mystery itself? Were you entertained by the events of the book? Would you continue on with the series?

CatLass007 This was just fun! 6mo
LiseWorks Money talks. But she has a character to be a feminist in any case. Remaining si gle gave her more power, I think she met her match and I was rooting for them. L 6mo
kspenmoll I have just started listening to this because of your posts. Already hooked! 6mo
Sace I didn‘t think the romantic element took away from her feminist power as I felt that there was a lot of mutual respect between her and Emerson. I thought the mystery was fine. I plan to continue with the series. 6mo
CogsOfEncouragement I really enjoyed this, and do plan to continue with the series. I thought the way Amelia wouldn‘t admit to us that she was becoming very fond of Emerson but we could tell anyway, was a fun way to write this. To me, they make a good couple of mutual love and respect. 6mo
CogsOfEncouragement I didn‘t predict the ending, mostly I didn‘t give Alberto enough credit to be a part of anything and had dismissed him completely earlier in the story. 6mo
DGRachel I think Amelia would have the same/similar feminist opinions. Inheriting a fortune gave her freedom to pursue her desires on her terms. I adore her and Emerson. 6mo
DGRachel I‘m not sure why there was such a surge in Egyptological interest in the late 19th/early 20th centuries, but IMO the artifacts belong to Egypt and should be returned. 6mo
CarolynM I think it‘s her upbringing, particularly her education (even though it was informal) that developed her personality, but that was only possible because her father was rich. Inheriting his fortune then enabled her to make her own choices. Her feminism is a large part of her attraction for Emerson, he‘s not interested in taking away her power. 6mo
TheAromaofBooks I loved rereading this one and am planning to work my way back through the rest of the series as well. Amelia and Emerson are a favorite couple of mine - there is so much respect between them for each other's strengths, intelligence, ideas, etc. So often the “strong female“ character means the man ends up being someone who just nods and goes along/is always wrong, but I love how Emerson is also stubborn, loud, and sometimes right as well 😂 6mo
willaful @DGRachel hear here! 6mo
willaful This was a fav when I was young and it was fun to revisit it. I never did finish the series--I felt it got too repetitious--and I'm stunned it got up to 20 books! (Though apparently Peters went back in the chronology a lot at the end, probably so her characters wouldn't get too elderly.)

It would be interesting to see an Amelia without money, because she's so fierce, it's hard not to believe she would have pulled off an independent life somehow.

#bakerstreetirregulars @CatLass007 @StayCurious

This was written in 1975! 😱 How can you not love a late-Victorian-self-sufficient-no-nonsense-badass female archaeologist protagonist who travels to Egypt in search of antiquarian objects and the freedom to do as she pleases? Throw in some worthy sidekicks and adversaries as well as a mummy-run-amok, and you have one heckuva fun historical detective read. I see more Amelia Peabody in my future.

CatLass007 I‘m so glad you enjoyed it! I see more of Amelia Peabody in my future as well. 6mo
dabbe @CatLass007 🤩🤗😀 6mo
CatLass007 I don‘t know if you listen to audiobooks but the first dozen books of the series are free on Audible. I think free things are wonderful.😀 6mo

Sace @CatLass007 who is the narrator? Hoopla had two different narrators and I went with the one read by Barbara Rosenblat and she is incredible! I read the book almost 20 years ago and can‘t remember a thing about it but I am sure to remember this audio! 6mo
dabbe @CatLass007 I tried audio a while back and had a hard time with it. Maybe I should give it another go. Thanks for the info! 🤗 6mo
CatLass007 @Sace Barbara Rosenblatt is the narrator of the book a houseguest and I are listening to. We‘re almost finished. 6mo
CatLass007 Audiobooks are not for everyone. I‘ve been reading for most of my life but I only started listening to audiobooks in December 2011. I was crocheting more than I ever had in my life but I wanted something to occupy my mind the way crochet occupied my hands. 6mo
Sace @CatLass007 I love to audio craft as well. I have to be doing something when I listen to audiobooks. Usually I‘m cleaning, going for a walk or crocheting. In fact, I have a cardigan I need to work on. 6mo
Sace @dabbe I would highly recommend the Rosenblatt. I also listen on 1.30 speed. Normal speed audiobooks feel way too slow to me. 6mo
CatLass007 @Sace I have to experiment with the speed every time I start a new book. I‘ve even slowed down some books, which I think is not because the narrator is talking too fast but because of some engineering issue. 6mo
kspenmoll Thanks! @CatLass007 for the info about free audible books in this series. I plan to start listening to the first in series this weekend. I usually listen while making a meal, doing dishes, walking. 6mo
CatLass007 @kspenmoll Audiocrafting, audiocleaning, audiowalking, whatever works.😀 6mo
quietjenn Amelia is such a wonderful character. 6mo

Hello new #BakerStreetIrregulars - unfortunately @CatLass007 and I have decided to end our group after our April discussion - yes, we are still in our infancy but unfortunately I had to consider all of my groups and commitments on Litsy and in life and some things I‘m unable to give the attention they deserve. Thanks to those who have joined us on what we thought was a fun delve into the many mysteries that are out there.

Librarybelle Thanks for hosting this! I know I just joined up, but it‘ll be fun to discuss this month‘s book with you and @CatLass007 ! 6mo
CatLass007 Thanks, @Librarybelle! It‘s a good idea. All the buddy reads are good ideas. There are just so many, something‘s gotta give. I‘m going to continue exploring the topics on my own as time and finances permit. I‘ll miss the discussions, but I know that Littens are so supportive of one another that discussions will continue informally. 6mo

CogsOfEncouragement I‘m really enjoying this first Amelia Peabody story. I had NEVER HEARD of the series. So I thank you for making me aware. I appreciate you making hard decisions about stepping away from good things in order to properly enjoy other good things. Good example to all of us. 💟 6mo
Read4life I‘m sorry to see this end but I‘m struggling with all of the buddy read groups I‘m in and I don‘t even run any of them. Thank you both for the time you put into this. 💙💙 6mo
julieclair Thank you both, @StayCurious and @CatLass007 , for hosting this very fun group. I often feel like a kid in a candy store with Litsy. There are too many fun things to choose from! But we can‘t do everything, and sometimes real life needs our attention. I applaud your search for balance. 💙 6mo
CatLass007 @CogsOfEncouragement @Read4life @julieclair I‘m glad you‘ve enjoyed #BakerStreetIrregulars. I was dimly aware of the Amelia Peabody series but didn‘t know much at all. I‘m enjoying the first book in the series and I‘m happy to share that the first dozen books in the series are free on Audible. I agree that being a Litten is very much like being a kid in a candy store! My Audible wish list is miles long because of Litsy. 6mo
TheAromaofBooks Thank you both so much for hosting - I totally get it on the overcommitments! 😂 @CatLass007 6mo
CatLass007 @TheAromaofBooks Thank you for hosting your buddy reads. Because of Litsy I‘ve gotten to meet many wonderful people. Was your handle once @barkingmadruns? (edited) 6mo
TheAromaofBooks @CatLass007 - No, I've always been TheAromaofBooks Perhaps you're thinking of @BarkingMadRead , who is still active? 6mo
CatLass007 @TheAromaofBooks Wow. I really shouldn‘t try to think and/or write anything unless I‘m fully awake. That is exactly who I meant and since your handles are nothing alike, the only possible explanation is that I was sleep typing.😅 6mo
BarkingMadRead @CatLass007 @TheAromaofBooks 🤣🤣🤣😴😴😴 6mo
