First in a mystery series, this is a light, entertaining re-imagining of Jane Austen's characters all together in a modern setting: Greek Row in a conservative Southern University. I liked that Gilliland is creating new plots rather than simply retelling Austen's, but be aware that includes characters being murder victims--and murderers. I don't think she's likely to disrupt any sacred pairings though.

Sly Jane Fairfax | Elizabeth Gilliland

Surprised I enjoyed this, to be honest. 😂 It's a short prequel to a series in which all of Austen's main characters work or go to school at a Southern University. This is about Jane's secret relationship, and her attempts to pledge a snobby sorority that will facilitate her seeing Frank... even though a much friendlier one with Elizabeth Bennet is available. It felt like the author was having fun with the characters, and I'll read on.

#SPNBookBingo2025 @OutsmartYourShelf square; driver picks the music. Jane is a musician, but Frank is definitely the driver of her decisions.

OutsmartYourShelf @willaful Can I just check, is that the correct prompt, as it should be a choice of 3 books for me to choose your next read for 'Driver Picks the Music'? 1w
willaful @OutsmartYourShelf I'm sorry, I'm confused. I've just been playing the bingo, is there more to it than that? 1w

willaful @OutsmartYourShelf Oh shoot, I never saw the second page of the rules with the prompts! Sorry about that. :-( 1w
OutsmartYourShelf @willaful No worries, I'm fairly flexible with most of them but some (like Driver Picks the Music) are specific.

Crinoline_Laphroaig I've never heard of this series. I shall look for it. 1w

It's the "Now" time of #JaneAustenThenAndNow and I'm challenging myself to tackle a whole pile of Emma adaptations and retellings! I'm hitting more movie and TV versions than ever, as it's been years since I've seen most of them, and I threw some new-to-me titles on this list as well. What are you taking on this month, #PemberLittens?

Crinoline_Laphroaig I've got Emmett as well! Plan to do. 2020 Movie, Clueless, and the Romola Garai 4 part series. And my official read is 2w
Andrea313 @Crinoline_Laphroaig That book looks so good! If I can actually get through my list, I might need to add that one, too. And the Romola series is one of my favorite Austen adaptations ever, I can't wait to rewatch. 2w

Emma | Jane Austen

1. This was my 9th or 10th reading? I can't keep track anymore! My viewpoint hasn't shifted too much over the years; Emma has always been low on my Austen List but I've found new things to appreciate each time through.

2. It's complicated! Its a coming-of-age story so of course we have to see how she grows and God knows I regret things I did and said at 20...! But at the same time, her shallow snobbery grates on me. 👇👇

Andrea313 3. I don't think I truly love anyone in this book! But Knightley has the most sense, Miss Bates is the purest of heart, and Mr. John Knightley is a relatable homebody, so I guess those three? 😂 And Frank Churchill can fuck alllllll the way off with his BS! Jane Fairfax deserved better. 2w
Andrea313 6. Oh, dear. The Westons will stay happily married, as will the Martins. I think Emma and Knightley will do just fine, especially if she continues to mellow out as she matures. Poor Jane Fairfax, though; she does not deserve a flirtatious, irresponsible, temperamental prick like Frank and while I guess marriage with a wealthy man beats being a governess, it's not much of a gain! 2w
Andrea313 7/8: Give me Miss Bates and Mr. Woodhouse any day! I actually like Miss Bates and while her yapping is a lot, I'll take it over Augusta's self-importance. And Harriet just makes me roll my eyes. No, I want to hang with Hetty and Henry and hear stories of their youth together, watch them wax nostalgic about Babies Jane, Emma, and Isabella, and delight in the everyday comforts and routines that bring them joy. ❤️ 2w

Andrea313 9. I was struck again that this is a story about community and how we exist within it. We aren't meant for isolation so how do we live alongside many personalities? How do we welcome newcomers? What does it mean to grow and change, to embrace the new or to stagnate? Where does forgiveness live- between Miss Bates and Emma, Harriet and Emma, Frank and, well, everyone- when our mistakes are big ones? These are the questions the book keeps asking me. 2w
Andrea313 Many thanks to @Crinoline_Laphroaig, our fearless leader, for these great questions! #PemberLittens #JaneAustenThenAndNow 2w
Crinoline_Laphroaig You make such wonderful points. I loved John Knightley this time. He is a relatable homebody. 2w

Mehso-so

September has not been a good reading month for me. I've only finished 3 books and might finish a 4th tonight. I've struggled to get into any of the books I've picked up. This was my #JaneAustenThenandNow selection for June 🤦‍♀️. It was okay. I liked the fictionalized interactions with Sir Francis Austin, but not a lot else. @Crinoline_Laphroaig

Crinoline_Laphroaig I enjoyed it except for the disparaging comments about Northanger Abbey. Also I don't have the level of forgiveness in me that happens in Epilogue. I'm like Mr. Darcy once my good opinion is lost it is lost. Also think because I loved The Jane Austen Society everything else struggles to live up to. 2w

Emma - Marjolein Bastin Classics Series | Jane - Bastin Austen, Marjolein

Pickpick

#Pemberlittens it's time for Emma discussion! Her are my answers:
1️⃣ 5 total. 4X since beginning to track my reading on Goodreads in 2017 and then once as a teenager. I swapped between the gorgeously summery tagged edition & early autumnal Signature Gilded classic edition. Finished up with Juliet Stevenson audio.
2️⃣ My perspective changed after reading article about as a caretaker she tied to her home parenting her parent. Loveable snob. ⬇️

Crinoline_Laphroaig 3️⃣ Mr Knightley. He's a bit grumpy and bossy at times. But he is kind. I love how he decides to move into Emma‘s home rather than upset Mr. Woodhouse.
Least favorite - Frank Churchill. He's such a cad! Yes he's hiding his engagement but that doesn't mean he needs to flirt so much with Emma. And he hides his mean-spiritedness with charm.⬇️
2w
Crinoline_Laphroaig 4️⃣ Strawberry picking at Donwell is my favorite. I hope one day to plan something inspired by it for my blueberries. Picnic at Box Hill is so cringy. Emma and Frank are horrible.
5️⃣ It's funny how often great quotes are given to unlikeable characters.
“Ah! there is nothing like staying at home for real comfort.” - Mrs Elton
“No coffee, I thank you, for me — never take coffee. — A little tea if you please,” - Miss Bates. ⬇️

2w
Crinoline_Laphroaig 6️⃣ Harriet is so easily swayed that sensible Robert Martin will be a good influence on her. I understand why Jane Fairfax accepted Frank Churchill. But I'm not certain she'll be all that financially secure,he will probably lose the fortune. Also feel he will lose interest in her, cheat, and make her life miserable. ⬇️

2w

Crinoline_Laphroaig Emma and Knightley will be happy I think. With Knightley being so much older she will end up being a rich widow and go back to her busybody match-making ways and turn into a holy terror.

7️⃣ Miss Bates because she's harmless. Mrs. E will run your life.
8️⃣ I take the gruel! When Harriet couldn't make up her mind on ribbon or where to send had me yelling ‘JUST MAKE A DECISION‘ at the audiobook.⬇️
2w
Crinoline_Laphroaig 9️⃣ I love the relationship between the Knightley brothers: “How d‘ye do, George?” and “John, how are you?” succeeded in the true English style, burying under a calmness that seemed all but indifference, the real attachment which would have led either of them, if requisite, to do every thing for the good of the other.”

*October means it's time for #EverythingEmma ‘Now‘ retellings and adaptations. 🎩📖👒

eeclayton I agree about Jane and Frank, not a good match. He seems primarily interested in her looks, not in her person. 2w
Bookwormjillk Yes on everything you said about Frank Churchill! 2w
willaful @Crinoline_Laphroaig Kind of like how Polonius from Hamlet is so often quoted! 2w

On Emma: Kelly suggests Knightley is in the process of enclosure, or privatizing formerly common land. After all, the "gipsies" were hanging about the lanes which must mean that their usual campsite was inaccessible, and the incident of turkey theft in the last chapters means that more villagers of Highbury are going hungry. Honestly, her ideas intrigue me, but then she also mentions that Harriet and Jane Fairfax are half sisters and girl, what?

Crinoline_Laphroaig There's literally nothing when it comes to Harriet's parentage. WTF? 2w
Andrea313 @Crinoline_Laphroaig Well, Miss Bates is called Hetty, you see, and it's a book where every family name is recycled so clearly Harriet Smith is named after her aunt. 🙃🙃 2w
