Mehso-so

#Pemberlittens I had issues with how Jonathan's dad the ORIGINAL Mr Darcy was portrayed. Because of that I gave it 3 stars on Goodreads. My full slightly spoilery Review in comments. 🎩

#JaneAustenThenAndNow

Crinoline_Laphroaig I don't read these books for the mystery. I read them for Juliet Tilney and Jonathan Darcy. Reasons for keeping them separated is very convoluted. Also I don't like that it's because of Mr Darcy! ⬇️

1d
Crinoline_Laphroaig Mr Darcy who had such character growth in Pride and Prejudice and married for love. There's no reason a man who ended up with Lydia as a sister in law and Mrs Bennet as a mother in law would disapprove of Juliet Tilney as a daughter in law. She not a golddigger. Her family is respectable and while not Pemberly rich, they are not poor. Juliet is smart, likeable but most importantly she truly cares for Jonathan. Mr Darcy wouldn't act this way.

Crinoline_Laphroaig Will I continue to read this series? Absolutely! I'm waiting for the happy ever after. 1d
willaful Hmmm, wondering now if I should skip this one and just wait for the HEA. ;-) They've been going downhill for me. 1d

Fun! A divorced American mom books a vacation at Austenland, a Regency-immersion country house hotel in England, hoping the change of scene will help her overcome the numbness she has felt since her divorce. Romance and a murder mystery… reality or just part of the immersion experience storyline? The witty, snarky conversations she has with herself in her head are a hoot! Loosely based on Northanger Abbey. Great on audio.

#JaneAustenThenAndNow

ChaoticMissAdventures I didn't realize she had made this into a series! I read her Austenland years ago and found it fun too. 5d
julieclair @ChaoticMissAdventures I think there are just the two books so far. But since this one is billed as part of a series, I‘m hoping that means there are more to come! 3d

This was a fun graphic novel of Northanger Abbey.

Mid-month check in. Read any good Northanger Abbey retellings? Anything you've hated?

BarkingMadRead Also, I read Ghosted awhile back and it was really good! (edited) 1w
Andrea313 Northranger by Rex Ogle was lots of fun, and I'm enjoying Ghosted so far. But I did a re-read of the following and any silly charm it may have once held drastically faded into sheer stupidity: 1w
TheBookHippie Not yet 🤣🤦🏻‍♀️ it‘s been a bit wild here. 1w
Crinoline_Laphroaig @TheBookHippie same! Last few days I read one graphic novel. 1w
Crinoline_Laphroaig @BarkingMadRead I've started as well. I'm really enjoying so far. 1w

Back on this book's bullshit, and this time it's making connections between unwanted or dangerous pregnancies and Northanger Abbey. Get this - what if Mrs. Tilney had been pregnant and died while miscarrying?? What if scenes of Catherine in her nightclothes were meant to be erotic reminders of female sexuality? What if Cath fiddling with the cabinet (heart fluttering, knees trembling) was a reference to masturbation? 😂 Never change, Helena Kelly.

Crinoline_Laphroaig Wow. This is what I don't get about analyzing authors work. You don't actually know what Jane Austen was thinking. And people come up with stuff like this. Maybe she was just telling a story and there was no symbolism. 1w
Andrea313 @Crinoline_Laphroaig Exactly. I actually do enjoy analysis like this because even if it's just a stab in the dark at what might be below the surface, it does sometimes bring out larger themes that I love to consider; this book's takes on Mansfield Park and P&P have added to my enjoyment of them both. But I take it all with a grain of salt, and with Northanger particularly. Like, its a silly and satiric take on gothics, let's be so for real. 1w

Kicking off the weekend the best way I know how - another YA adaptation for the #PemberLittens and a strong, cold G&T. Hope everyone has at least a little bit of laziness in front of them! #BooksAndBooze #BooksAndBlooms #JaneAustenThenAndNow

Completely lovely YA adaptation of Northanger Abbey with perfect gothic parallels and a sweetly real young love story for our two leading lads. I don't always love a graphic novel but this one captured me, and while it deals with more serious themes than the original (homophobia, racism, poverty, illness), it still feels like an A+ successor to Austen's novel. I have a feeling I'll be coming back to this one. #PemberLittens #JaneAustenThenAndNow

I had the same problem with this as the first book, which is that the whole Austenland experience seems to be a real drag. I skimmed ahead some and am not sorry I bailed.

Crinoline_Laphroaig Austenland movie is much more fun. 2w

Dangerous to Know: Jane Austen's Rakes & Gentlemen Rogues | Katie Oliver, Amy D'Orazio, Karen M Cox

For #JaneAustenThenAndNow I've read the novellas related to Northanger Abbey. There are 3: As Much As He Can deals w General Tilney & it was not bad; The Art Of Sinking is about John Thorpe & I couldn't finish it 😬; For Mischief's Sake is Frederick Tilney's story & the one I liked best of the three.
These stories try to flesh out Austen's rogues, often w an aim of leaving a better impression of them. It sometimes works for me but not always.

bookandbedandtea The Willoughby and Wickham stories were both "not bad" while the one for Colonel Fitzwilliam (who I hadn't ever really classified as a rogue) was "pretty good." 2w
Ruthiella Colonel Fitzwilliam was lovely! When I first read the book (knowing nothing of the story or outcome-a good reason to NEVER spoil a classic, I don‘t care how long it has been in print), I thought he might have been a good match for Lizzie. 2w
bookandbedandtea @Ruthiella I agree with you. I remember thinking he and Lizzie would be very good together! And, despite him wanting to marry for some money, I've always thought of him as one of the good guys so I was surprised he was included in an anthology about rakes and rogues. 😆 2w
Crinoline_Laphroaig I'm gradually reading but haven't got to Northanger yet. 1w
