Jessilyn grew up with her father and brother on a small cattle farm in the old west. Her mother died in childbirth. When her Pa passed away she dresses as a man and goes in search of her brother, who has become an outlaw.

The atmosphere of the late 1800‘s in the old west gives this a feeling of desperation and melancholy. I loved Jess and the bonds she managed to make along her journey.

Cinfhen I‘m reading a book also set in late 1800‘s and I love that old west vibe- such a different world!!! And really a hard life. This book sounds great 🤠 (edited) 13mo
LeeRHarry Have this one on my shelf - was intrigued when I bought it and now more intrigued after your review. 😊 13mo
squirrelbrain I loved this one - so not my ‘usual‘ book but I fell for Jessilyn too. 13mo
SamAnne I‘ve been trying to get to this one for years! Thanks for the reminder. 13mo

Preston joins an exploration for La Ciudad Blanca, or the White City, in #Honduras that reportedly has riches beyond belief. What is discovered is quite amazing, with some moments of me squealing in disgust as Preston comes in close contact with reptiles and bugs.

It should be noted too that the methods used in this exploration raised a lot of controversy in the archaeology community - Preston does address this and gives his thoughts. ⬇️⬇️⬇️

Librarybelle ⬆️⬆️⬆️Nevertheless, this is fascinating. There are chapters with really dense background, but the experience in the mountainous rainforest is edge of your seat type reading. Preston also addresses disease - there is a reason why (I won‘t spoil it!). But, his cautions of worldwide epidemics are a foreshadowing of what we experienced in 2020 (this was published in 2017). I was riveted. Highly recommended…⬇️⬇️⬇️ 13mo
Librarybelle ⬆️⬆️⬆️ though I would also recommend reading the articles of the dissenters for their thoughts on this expedition. 13mo

Hooked_on_books I read this a couple years ago and really enjoyed it. I especially appreciate how inept he was at adventuring. 😂 I found that relatable! 13mo
Librarybelle @Hooked_on_books I know! 😂 13mo

Bluebird I‘ve had this book on my TBR mountain for awhile and despite hearing so many good things about it, it remains unread. I think I will add to my bookspinbingo list for November so I remind myself to get to it soon! Looking forward to going down the rabbithole with this one 13mo
Librarybelle @Bluebird That sounds wonderful, and a perfect addition for Nonfiction November! 13mo

Singout
The Mountains Sing | Que Mai Phan Nguyen
Pickpick

Such a moving novel: shifting back and forth in North Vietnam between an early teenage girl‘s experience of the end of the Vietnam war and her grandmother‘s survival of the 1945 Great Hunger and later Communist land reform, with the middle generation being the struggling children in the early phase, or those who went to war later. A country I know almost nothing about: so many good insights. #Booked2023 #SetInAMountainRegion

Cinfhen I‘ve been curious about this one - great review 2y
TheAromaofBooks Woohoo!! 2y
Singout Highly recommended, with caveats about graphic violence. 2y
BarbaraTheBibliophage This was such a good book, with those important caveats! 2y

Second time reading and I didn't bail.

The memoirs of Lady Trent start with Isabella's childhood, her first season and her first year of marriage. She (now 19y/o) persuades her husband to take her on a research trip to a mountainous country to study the local dragon wildlife.

Dragons are dangerous. The locals aren't very welcoming. There are smugglers. She doesn't speak the language.

TheSpineView Well done! 2y

Demon Copperhead: A Novel | Barbara Kingsolver

#booked2023 #setinamountainregion also would work for #moderntakeonaclassic
#pantone2023 #blueperennial

Excellent but bleak. This reimagining of David Copperfield as an Appalachian bildungsroman is Kingsolver in wonderful form. Naturally, the writing (from our hero‘s perspective) is fantastic. But the story‘s deeply depressing, with poverty and the opioid crisis as its main themes. Can‘t wait to discuss with my IRL book group.

Lcsmcat My book club has this on our list for later this year. I might try to reread the Dickens ahead of that. 2y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Lcsmcat Makes sense. I just used the Wikipedia entry! 🤣 2y
Lcsmcat @BarbaraTheBibliophage 😂😂 When (years ago) I read Poisonwood Bible I found rereading Heart of Darkness really added to my enjoyment of it. So 🤷🏻‍♀️ if I have time. 😀 2y

Mehso-so

Meh, this was okay. I finished it only because I wanted to see what happened, but goodness it dragged! I wouldn‘t really call it a thriller, as the “thrills” didn‘t even happen until maybe the last fourth of the book. #doublespin for March though 🤷‍♀️😂

Cinfhen I was wondering about this one! Think it‘s a pass - thanks 😊 2y

I don‘t know when I picked this up on Audible or why, but it was a really solid memoir of a young woman‘s experience as a war correspondent/ photo journalist. Lynsey Addario has worked in almost all the contemporary war zones risking her life to take photos that show the cost of war on civilians, soldiers and most often innocent women & children. Her story was fascinating & I loved hearing her story. #52Books23 #AWarOtherThanWWIorWWII
