Help good Litsy people! Work is hectic, study has my brain leaking out of my ears and I'm about to go on a road trip holiday. I need recommendations please? Something light but well written, fun, engaging...send me your holiday best! Thank you 😘

thegreensofa I thought French Exit, and Shopgirl were good light reads. They‘re a bit old you might have read them, but if not maybe check and see if they‘re your cup of tea? 🙂. 3y
BookmarkTavern I‘d recommend TJ Klune‘s books: The House in the Cerulean Sea, and Under the Whispering Door ! Enjoy your trip! 3y
CarolynM I just read (well, listened, but you know...) and loved this one. Enjoy your holiday 3y
JeffyRoo Thanks everyone! I'll check them out and yes @ozma.of.oz love TJ Klune. Cerulean was my favourite book in 2020. 3y

This was a book for LMPBC round 10. I don't normally read apocalyptic novels so it was a bit out of my comfort zone. I found the adults to be selfish and not that good at making plans or accepting what was happening, though I did love the two young people who were stoic and calm and managed to understand faster than their parents that things had changed.

JeffyRoo I quite liked the fact that what had occurred was never explained, and I loved the way that the author added random sentences about non main characters and situations into the story, it gave a wider perspective than just that of the main characters.
Thanks @thegreensofa for the pick for this round and for @LapReader for your comments in the book.
4y
thegreensofa I‘m happy you enjoyed it 🙂. It was a different read for me. And it has such split reviews! I can‘t wait to read both your comments ☺️👍. I have sent yours (Filligree) on to @lapreader few weeks ago before Christmas, so we‘re all on time! 👏🏻😀 4y

TJ Klune. What a writer.

How many stars can you give? This book gets all the stars. It was both magical and so very human. Loved the characters, the premise and the writing. Made me laugh, made me cry. Going off to buy her second book. #LMPBC round 10 pick @thegreensofa @LapReader can't wait for you to read it.

Elizabeth2 This was a good book. I read it a while ago, yet the story has stayed with me. Sweet, mysterious, ultimately romantic. It had it all. 4y
thegreensofa Me too! I am looking forward to it. Sounds like a nice mish-mash of genres. ⏱🤍 4y

thegreensofa No worries ✨😁✨ I loved this! Such a great classic, and a genre of its own I say. I hope you enjoy it too! 💚xo 4y
JeffyRoo @Annie1215 I picked it up at the Post Office and was thinking...no...I didn't order a book recently, did I?? Then I opened it and voila. Lovely surprise on a wet and cold spring day. Thanks again! 4y

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
I have no words for the beauty of this book. More like this please. Good tears.

quote
JeffyRoo

"Linus had decided long ago that runbing wasn't something he liked very much. He never understood those who woke up even before the sun had risen, donned their fancy expensive sneakers, and went running on purpose. It was most unusual."

Too true, Linus, too true ?

Ayesha at Last | Uzma Jalaluddin

"But unlike Hafsa, Ayesha had never tried to shape the world in her image. She had always seen the world and the people who inhabited it exactly as they were: flawed, imperfect, eager to think the worst of others while excusing their own misdeeds."

That is a superpower.

I don't want this book to end!

I hate Sheila. My blood pressure is rising reading this. She is openly discriminating against Khalid, shy different boy that he is.

"I'm very disappointed with your performance today", Sheila said. "His coworkers must be covering for him."

Loving Ayesha's character and the story so far. #buddyread @4thhouseontheleft @Kangaj1 @Librarybelle @Chrissyreadit

Librarybelle Sheila is horrid! 4y
Chrissyreadit Yes- I wanted Sheila to lose her job so badly! 4y
Kangaj1 She was rough. I can't see how that would fly nowadays, but I am probably wrong. 4y

Such a slow burn. With a twist in the tale which changes everything. I really liked the main character Camille. She was so real in her damage. LMPBC#9

Pride | Ibi Zoboi
Pickpick

I struggle with characters who are so attached to their place, being a wanderer myself, so it took me a while to understand Zuri and how her attachment to her place drove her pride, and her resistance of change throughout the book. It's such a rich telling, you can almost taste the words in some of the phrases and I loved how Ms Zoboi made it a modern telling of P&P.

alisiakae Great review! And @Revenge4bess I agree with the others about the evolution of Zuri. I also thought the story gets better later in the novel. 4y
janeycanuck @revenge4bees @4thhouseontheleft @JeffyRoo I quite enjoyed this. I listened to the audio and the narrator was great, I don‘t think I‘d have liked it as much in print. Zoboi really hit that balance of honouring the original story and making it fresh & relevant. 4y
Nute I‘m a lover of a wandering adventure as well, but at some point I am always drawn back to the comfort of home. 4y

The Survivors | Jane Harper
Pickpick

Just wow. It's not so much that Ms Harper writes books about crime. It's more that her books about humans have crimes included. In The Survivors she writes of a small town in Tasmania, and what happens when the death of a visitor dredges up the memories of another tragedy 12 years earlier. I really enjoyed watching the characters develop, discover things about themselves and their friends and come to terms with both the past and the present.

CarolynM Can't wait to get my hands on this. I did a pre-order, but something's gone wrong.☹️I'm going to have to get a copy elsewhere. 4y

The Guest List | Lucy Foley
Mehso-so

So it was a well written story. It had a little suspense and the setting was ideal, I also liked the various narrators and their perspectives.
I'm hoping it was meant to be a an off putting story of privilege, but I found it exceedingly difficult to care much about most of the characters, so the murder was sort of anticlimactic. I can see how it's well liked, just not my cup of tea.

This sucked me in immediately and didn't let go. Family, community, conspiracy, politics and beauty. So well written and engaging.

Quote from the last chapter 'Your heart is with you your whole life.'

Great book for any Australian, and an opening into our country for everyone else. Tasmania is truly an amazing place.

CarolynM I enjoyed it too, although I thought it started a lot stronger than if ended. 4y

"I long ago determined to live my life not in noisy discontent but in quiet acceptance"

#Pemberlittens
This is a first person narrative of Charlotte Lucas's life with Collins, a few years after they married. It feels so real, so like the lives of women throughout the ages, in marriages they had little choice but to accept.

I very much enjoyed this book. Well written, with a beautiful melancholy of the reality of Charlotte's situation.

Catching up on chapters and it occurs to me...is Mrs Bennet about mid 40s?? They've been married for 23 years and she would have been married pretty young...have all the movies been playing her at least 10 years older than she actually is?

Never thought about it before!

Curiouser_and_curiouser I think 40 year olds back then would probably look older than 40 year olds nowadays 😊 4y
sprainedbrain Yep, I think she would be late 40s at the most! 4y

Incredible. Encompassing. A very human story.
Augusta is the odd sister, never fitting into her family, though she lives the best life she can in her own skin, driven by words.
Parfait is the oldest son of a Burundian family, being torn apart by war, who wants to escape.

A story of intersection, the impact of love and loss, and human relationships.

I found this book difficult to process at times. Ms Lee's experiences as a court associate, watching everyday as people such as her abuser get away with their crimes and listening to her internal struggles as she decides to bring her own case.
It is a difficult but necessary book for all of us.
Well written and important story. Thank you.
