There is so much wrong with this book I don‘t know where to begin. The writing is melodramatic, the characters are annoying and the “plot twist” is so unrealistic that quotes are needed just to call it that. 0 out of 10…would not recommend. Would give it a negative star if that were such a thing.

bthegood You did better than me on this one - I bailed early on - 🙂 3w

I wasn‘t going to read this and then in the bookstore this enthusiast reader said that she loved it! I have to say it does pull you in. A wife represents her husband who is a suspect for his mistresses murder. 😳 The ending seemed rushed to me and there are some loopholes but I did like this quick read. Murder kills!🤓

This book has so much potential. Great plot about a murdered mistress, a powerful female attorney character, dual-perspective storyline and a twist at the end! Some of the writing left a bit to be desired. “Discoveries” came from thin air, but it was still an enjoyable read for sure.

This book reminds me of a daytime soap opera. The melodrama is out of this world and everyone is pregnant with the leading man‘s baby. I‘m not holding out high hopes for this one but miracles do sometimes happen…just ask Jack Deveraux. Now I must get back to my stories…

What did we learn? Don‘t take a mistress when your wife is a lawyer. Or actually, in any situation, don‘t take a mistress.

It certainly keeps you guessing until the end, I listened to the audiobook and did not love it, I think I would‘ve enjoyed it more if I read the physical book.

I was really loving this book at first. Adam is so chaotic. When he first had the run in with the police, I was thinking "omg, wtf, calm down" it was very abrupt. These characters were all so unlikable but I was eating up the story.
Then the end happened. I had predicted it, which normally doesn't bother me. But the way it happened was so dumb.
Great book, simple writing, engaging - 4 ⭐️
But that ending knocked it down to 3

I teetered between so-so and pick on this one. It was an engaging, quick paced story with a few good red herrings thrown in to throw you off. But the writing was a little off and almost seemed juvenile at times. Was the story believable? Absolutely not but that‘s why books are entertainment and not always true to life. It wasn‘t bad enough that I would not try to read another book by the author.

This book was so dumb but I read the whole thing in one day so maybe I‘m the dummy. Unbelievable and with very unlikeable characters but it was a page turner, I‘ll give the author that. I didn‘t want to DNF. This was my #BookSpinBingo #doublespin for September.

There are so many plot holes in this book that it‘s truly hard for me to imagine how it has such a high rating. It reads as if the editor just gave up on it and pushed it out the door.

Good but not great. The twist came out of left field with no prior clues or foreshadowing. It needed a long explanation to make sense. Also, there were minor inconsistencies like “he put on sweats” then the next page says “he unzipped his pants”. I don‘t feel like I learned anything from reading this one.

This had enormous plot holes, one-dimensional characters, and a complete disregard for reality (see comment). But it was entertaining and non-demanding enough to keep me reading. Plus, there were red herrings everywhere and I was curious about whodunit. Then came the last chapter with its unbelievable and ridiculous reveals and I lost my remaining goodwill for this book. Spoiler comment below.

bookandbedandtea No one in my circle has a career in law so I could be wrong but I'm pretty sure it's not ok for a lawyer to represent their spouse in court. Also, what cop/ Sheriff allows the lawyer to direct their investigation and watch interrogations? The utter lack of professionalism from every professional person in this book was irritating. 10mo
bookandbedandtea This is the 2nd book I've read this week in which the culprit had a complete personality change at the very end in order to make them the villain. Sure, she wasn't particularly likable throughout the book, but Sarah's change here from angry/hurt/wronged wife to blood thirsty she-devil wasn't believable. 10mo
RosePressedPages Reading the plot on the back of the book, I also that it was ridiculous that a lawyer would be representing their spouse in court and passed on it :/ 10mo

bthegood @bookandbedandtea exact same feelings here, my field is Criminal Justice, and yes it was ridiculous!🚫 10mo
bookandbedandtea @MadelineMcCrae @bthegood I'm usually able to suspend disbelief well enough to handwave any number of things so I figured I could deal with the wife representing her husband. And I probably could have- if the book didn't have numerous other problems! 🙈 10mo

The premise of this book was intriguing: a husband‘s mistress is murdered in his cabin & his attorney wife chooses to defend him. As evidence come to life, the truth seems hard to find. The thing is, everyone in this book is batshit crazy. It‘s like their id & superego are fighting & the former is continually winning out. Ultimately though, I found myself strangely liking this novel even as I shook my head at it.

The story was entertaining enough to keep me reading. Especially the first half. The writing itself, lack of character development, twists that didn‘t make sense, and mess of an ending are why I rated this 2 stars. If you can get past the plot holes and enjoy the story then you may like it a little more. ⭐️⭐️

I can suspend belief for horror/fantasy/scifi/magic/cozies – but thrillers have to be somewhat grounded in reality for me. This was too unbelievable. It seems like there was no research into criminal law, police procedure or crime scenes.
⬇️ for a few of my reasons for DNF on this one -

Make a great day everyone 🙂

bthegood Sarah is supposedly the best criminal defense attorney in DC. Her husband, accused of murder, is beat up by sheriffs deputies when arrested and while in custody and she is hurt also by murder victims husband (also a deputy). Yet Sarah is okay with it and she and the Sheriff will work together to get to the bottom of it. Other issues as well (how does Adam not know woman he is in bed with was stabbed over 30 times - can he not feel the blood?) 10mo
bthegood I read about 20%, skimmed ahead and then had to let go – seems like a lesser version of Presumed Innocent. 10mo
5feet.of.fury @bthegood I agree, this one is preposterous. 😂 10mo

I started following Jeneva Rose on Instagram before reading any of her books because she is hilarious and refers to her husband Drew as "the past tense of draw." That is my kind of humor ?

I am happy to report that I am still a fan after reading this twisty tale about a murdered mistress, an accused husband, and a defense attorney wife who takes on her husband's case.

This book was not at all what I expected it to be, and I was a little let down. The policing could have been written better, but I get it. Adam was a sorry excuse of a man, spoiled and fucking selfish. He got everything he deserved. Sarah played her hand well and I'm a leave it at that. I would have liked to see a deeper dive into the mistress's background around her allegedly murdering her husband.

This was SO good! I hate overhyped thrillers because they always fall flat for me. However, this read was everything promised. The twists and turns that this book take left me guessing. To start off, I LOVE that chapters were short. Always a huge seller. Jumping from different prospectives with timelines overlapping was super intriguing towards the end of the book!

There were some lines that were said at the end of chapters that eluded to more but were never really explained or further developed. Not sure if that was just to play with ideas in your head while reading or not?

End of the book = total mind game!
