Quarantine!
Quarantine!: East European Jewish Immigrants and the New York City Epidemics of 1892 | Howard Markel
14 posts | 1 to read
" Quarantine! unites the best of the two worlds of social history and clinical history in a narrative style so personal and at times gripping that a reader forgets that the book is meant primarily to be a scholarly text... Markel is as much spinning a complex yarn as he is writing a scrupulously researched chronicle." -- Sherwin B. Nuland, M.D., New Republic "Markel does the best job I have seen of depicting the experience of the quarantined -- as well as explaining something of the political and etiological/prophylactic debates that framed and legitimated the quarantine itself. Along the way he makes substantive contributions to Jewish history, urban history, and public health history." -- Charles E. Rosenberg, University of Pennsylvania In Quarantine! Howard Markel traces the course of the typhus and cholera epidemics that swept through New York City in 1892. The story is told from the point of view of those involved -- the public health doctors who diagnosed and treated the victims, the newspaper reporters who covered the stories, the government officials who established and enforced policy, and, most importantly, the immigrants themselves. Drawing on rarely cited stories from the Yiddish American press, immigrant diaries and letters, and official accounts, Markel follows the immigrants on their journey from a squalid and precarious existence in Russia's Pale of Settlement, to their passage in steerage, to New York's Lower East Side, to the city's quarantine islands. At a time of renewed anti-immigrant sentiment and newly emerging infectious diseases, Quarantine! provides a historical context for considering some of the significant problems that face American society today. "Beautifully written and thoroughly researched... This is a fine piece of history with a timely and thoughtful message; it deserves a wide readership among both health care professionals and professional historians." -- Nancy Tomes, New England Journal of Medicine "One of the major strengths of the book is the balance between the social construction of disease and the biological realities of illness... Quarantine! therefore provides an important cautionary tale not only for historians, but also for medical professionals who need to deal with modern epidemics in a rational and humane manner." -- Heather Munro Prescott, New York History "With vivid brush strokes Markel sketches in many of the colorful personalities who figured in his tale... Quarantine! is a fascinating and moving account." -- Betty Falkenberg, Pakn Treger

This happened today to a house diagonal to ours. As my daughter put it: “They are taking the quarantine really seriously.”

Amiable 😄 5y
marleed What is that!? 5y
TEArificbooks I have seen that done before to fumigate. They don‘t want the chemicals blowing down the street into the neighbors houses 5y

umbrellagirl Is that a tent for fumigation? 5y
Texreader @mdm139 @umbrellagirl @marleed My guess is it‘s for termites which are terrible in our area. We‘ve treated and then have tested for them for years so hopefully we never have to go through this. Fortunately no one has lived in the house for months so no one had to move out just for this. It‘s been getting beautified to go up for sale. (edited) 5y
Wife My first thought when I saw this pick was “Breaking Bad” 💎💎💎💎💎💎💎💎💎💎 5y
peaKnit I was thinking a circus was cancelled...I‘m glad there is a better reason that makes sense😊 5y
Texreader @peaknit So you can imagine my doubletake when I stepped out the backdoor and saw it! I wondered why there was a circus tent 🎪 so close in the neighborhood! And during a lockdown! 5y

📚2 on Goodreads. 1. North and South by Elizabeth Gaskell and 2. David Copperfield by Dickens.
🙄 While I get annoyed at the complications involved in getting things you need, I‘m pretty zen about the whole quarantine—I‘m with my library! What‘s not to like?
☕️ Coffee! Staying stocked with drinks is the #1 challenge!

Centique I went at my fringe with the kitchen scizzors last week. Truly anxiety bangs. 😂 I was due for a cut on Day 1 of lockdown. It isn‘t too bad! But the benefit of wavy unruly hair is you never have to get it exactly straight anyway 😂😂 5y
batsy @rabbitprincess Same, but that's been a mood all my life 😂 5y

batsy @Centique Oh me too! I was very much due for a haircut when they announced lockdown and now I'm almost tempted to hack some length off myself. How bad can it be, right 🤣 5y
Centique @batsy I am a little bit scared of what my hairdresser is going to say when she sees it 😳 I think I‘ve got about 3 weeks to grow out the really short bit! 😂😂 5y

a note to my postal book clubs..✨ I have both books ready to go, but seeing as how my state has implemented a mandated stay at home order, which is most likely going to be enforced by law in the coming days, I doubt I will be able to mail them on time 😭 I also doubt you want mail from CA anyway right now lol @mngraham @TorieStorieS @inthegreensandblues @SumisBooks @laurenslibrary @Melismatic @Julie548 @Shakespearience @jessinikkip @WriterAtHeart

jessinikkip Oh no! I for one would rather you stay in and safe than sorry about mailing books. You take care of you 5y
BeansPage Okay I may have a solution: What if instead you chose a free book on Amazon? Not just on KU but free for all on Amazon. We could all grab it up and that could be your book for the month of April. Hopefully by the time May rolls around you will be able to go to the post office. Do you want to try that or should we just keep your spot open and you can sit this round out? I want you to be safe above all. 5y
ameliashley @SumisBooks that‘s a great idea! let me take a look at them and I‘ll get back to you ☺️ 5y

Melismatic @ameliashley I feel similarly in NYC, and have no car to get from place to place - so I might do the same a pick an ebook if that works best for y‘all. 😭 Hoping everyone is at home & safe! @SumisBooks @WriterAtHeart @Julie548 @laurenslibrary @jessinikkip @Shakespearience (edited) 5y
inthegreensandblues No worries, these things are low priority under the circumstances! I hope you are doing OK. I suspect my county is about to go under mandatory stay at home too; the metro area we're just outside of (KC) has it starting Tuesday. 5y

As of yesterday, I was put in quarantine for the next two weeks due to travelling in the UK last week. Today was my first day home, and so far it hasn‘t been to hard to work from home. But I guess I have some long days ahead of me! But anything that might help speeding down the virus spreading to fast is good at this point, so happy to do my part.

Started my first #QuarantineBook today, look forward to it!

Sooooo.... a person from my bf‘s office has been infected by corona, so now my bf and I have to stay home for two weeks in quarantine. I can‘t go out with the trash, do grocery shopping, work or anything. And my biggest worry at the moment is, that I have a parcel at the PO containing new books, but I can‘t pick it up! 👎

But overall, we are fine, and I‘m trying to get the most out of my time at home by hopefully getting through some of my tbr 🤞

squirrelbrain Oh no! Hopefully you‘ll both be OK (and your books won‘t get too lonely waiting to be picked up) 😘 5y
Reggie Part of me thinks to hell with all the quarantining and let‘s just go through it. They‘re not even talking about all the people who have survived. Hope you stay ok and read a lot!! 5y
LiteraryinPA Thinking of you! 5y

Suet624 Wait...you can‘t take the trash out? I never thought of that. I hope all goes well for you 💕💕 5y
LibrarianRyan Is there someone who could pick it up for you? 5y
batsy Oh no! That's tough. Much love and I hope you're both in the clear ❤️ 5y
Kalalalatja @Suet624 apparantly not, because we live in an apartment complex. I don‘t know if the rules are different if you live in a house. @LibrarianRyan we have made a deal with some friends who‘ll do the shopping for us and take the trash with them when they go, so plans are made! 5y
Kalalalatja @squirrelbrain @Reggie @LiteraryinLititz @batsy thanks friends! We are symptom free at the moment, so fingers crossed 🤞 at the moment we are just trying to plan how we can get through the next 14 days without getting too bored 😅 5y
rubyslippersreads @Kalalalatja This is where stockpiling books will really pay off. 😄 5y
erzascarletbookgasm Oh dear, hope both of you will be in the clear/test negative for it. And things work out smoothly during this period. ❤️ 5y
wanderinglynn Oh my. How frustrating. I hope the next 14 days go by quickly & symptom-free. 💚 5y
LeahBergen Oh, no! I hope all goes well and you can enjoy (somewhat!) this little holiday. 😘 5y
erank58 Wow, I didn't realize "quarantine" literally meant you couldn't leave your home! Hoping everyone is healthy! 5y
diovival Oh, wow. I hope all remains well. 5y
Laughterhp Oh no. Good luck! I hope you get a lot of reading time in. 5y
Cathythoughts Take care .... lots of books to read & stay well ❤️👍🏻 5y
InLibrisVeritas I hope everything turns out alright, and you both remain free of it 5y
BarbaraBB Oh no! I hope you will be fine and can turn it into a little vacation with a lot of books l! Please keep us posted 💕 5y
BarbaraBB @Reggie I so feel the same about it!! However I am not in quarantine or I‘ll so maybe I would think otherwise in that case. 5y
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks Oh no!! I‘m sorry! ❤️❤️❤️ 5y
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks Where do you live? 5y
Kalalalatja @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks I live in Denmark, and the authorities here are very strict about preventing contamination, so a lot of precautionary measures have been put into place to protect our elders and people who are chronically ill @BarbaraBB @Reggie So I feel like I‘m doing my part to keep everyone as safe as possible. Even though it feels extreme that I can‘t even take out the trash! 5y
Kalalalatja @rubyslippersreads I know, and I haven‘t been keeping up! I have listened to audios so much, that I haven‘t bought print books in forever 😅 @erzascarletbookgasm @wanderinglynn @LeahBergen @diovival @Laughterhp @Cathythoughts @InLibrisVeritas thanks for all your well wishes! We are optimistic, and trying to stay that way for as long as possible! 😅🤞 5y
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @Kalalalatja I‘m glad to know they are doing that!! We need to do more here! 5y
rockpools Oh no! Stay healthy. Looks like you‘ve got at least a couple of days‘ reading matter there! 5y
ferskner Oh my gosh! Two weeks with books doesn't sound so bad, but I know being in the house for the long is a drag. I hope you'll be okay! 5y
hilded It‘s scary indeed, I hope you stay symptom free during the next weeks 🤞🏻 5y
Jas16 Thinking of you both and hope you get through the next 14 days smoothly 5y
Meaw_catlady Sending positivity and strength your way! 💕 5y
BarbaraBB Of course, I understand. Here are people put in quarantine immediately too. And I agree for the elderly and vulnerable. Only I think many many many more people are carrying the virus than the ones who have been tested. So I wonder if it makes sense. But of course I‘m not sure. My parents live in a part of the country that has been shut down now and I don‘t dare visiting them from Amsterdam because I may carry the virus without knowing it 🤞🏽😘 5y
Kalalalatja @BarbaraBB completely agree, I think there are many people carrying it around without knowing. There‘s just been a Press conference in Denmark, and the checking practice is being changed - now it is only the sickest people who will be tested. Big parts of Denmark are shutting down, all schools are being closed, non-critical government employees are being sent home. Denmark is shutting down, and it is crazy 5y
LeeRHarry Stay well! It‘s still pretty low key here in Australia at the moment but I fear it is only a matter of time before more restrictions are put in place - I‘m likely to cancel a trip back to the UK in April as I don‘t want to bring a nasty pressie back to my parents and grandma! (edited) 5y
BarbaraBB All schools in the country? Wow, that is a big decision. Schools are still open here. The south is shut down and people who are coughing advised to stay home but that‘s about it. Oh and we‘re not allowed to shake hands anymore. But it must feel weird to be part of the thing suddenly when you‘re feeling perfectly fine. I hope of course you won‘t carry it 🙏 5y
Hooked_on_books On the up side, you have a really good looking shelf there to keep you busy! Maybe you can have a friend pick up the box for you and deliver it outside your door if you arrange it with the post office? 5y
underthebelljar Wow I hope you don‘t show symptoms and can stave off boredom the next 14 days! I live right next to the largest outbreak in the US so quarantine is a real possibility here too... 5y
Lcsmcat I hope you both stay symptom free and are fine. Let us know if you need more books - we can send you ebooks if you have an app. 5y
mrp27 Thinking of you. I'm glad to see countries and cities taking precautions. 5y
quietjenn Oh no! Good luck. 5y
JennyM Oh my lovely. That‘s not good! Hope you stay safe and well. Take care 😘 5y
CarolynM Hope you find some things to enjoy while stuck at home. Plenty of reading time! Stay well and stay sane😘 5y
Avanders Oh wow 🤭 Hope your current books keep you good company! 🤗♥️ Also I love that you refer to the at risk people in your community as “our” elders 🥰 5y
Kalalalatja @RachelO @ferskner @hilded @Jas16 @Meaw_catlady @LeeRHarry @Hooked_on_books @BookishJess @Lcsmcat @mrp27 @quietjenn @JennyM @CarolynM @Avanders I have made a quarantine to do list, I got some exciting unread books, and we have friends and family willing to buy groceries for us, so all is well it the moment. Ask me again at day 7, though, and we will see how I feel 😅😅 5y
hilded @Kalalalatja I got put in quarantine myself today for the next two weeks 😢 I was in the UK last week, and everyone here that has travelled outside the Nordic countries is being put in quarantine. I am symptom free luckily, so I‘ll have to set up some kind of home office. My boss will deliver an extra PC screen to me tomorrow to make it a little more convenient to work from home. Good luck with tour quarantine, fingers crossed time will fly 😅🤞🏻 5y
TrishB Sorry missed this - been that busy dealing with impacts of virus on work!! Hope you‘re ok, use as an excuse to read definitely. 5y
alisiakae I‘m sorry you have to self-quarantine. 💜 Are they going to test you even if you are asymptomatic? I‘m glad your country/gov seems to be doing a better job trying to prevent spreading it. 5y
Kalalalatja @4thhouseontheleft no, the government just changed the guidelines a couple of days ago, so now it is only people who are showing more severe symptoms who will be tested. This way, the government hope the pressure on the health care system will be minimized for a bit, while also saving test kits and money. @TrishB how are the situation in the UK? The News here are primarily focused on the Danish situation, so I feel out of touch with the world 5y
ephemeralwaltz Sorry to hear this, Katja! Hope you're holding up okay and have been feeling okay. My best friend is in the same situation and it sounds terrible!!!:( 5y
