The Raven
The Raven: Fully Illustrated | Edgar Allen Poe
28 posts | 14 read | 2 to read
The Raven by Edgar Allan Poe and illustrated by Gustave Dor. "The Raven" is a narrative poem by American writer Edgar Allan Poe. First published in January 1845, the poem is often noted for its musicality, stylized language, and supernatural atmosphere. It tells of a talking raven's mysterious visit to a distraught lover, tracing the man's slow fall into madness. The lover, often identified as being a student, is lamenting the loss of his love, Lenore. Sitting on a bust of Pallas, the raven seems to further distress the protagonist with its constant repetition of the word "Nevermore". The poem makes use of folk, mythological, religious, and classical references. Poe claimed to have written the poem logically and methodically, intending to create a poem that would appeal to both critical and popular tastes, as he explained in his 1846 follow-up essay, "The Philosophy of Composition". The poem was inspired in part by a talking raven in the novel Barnaby Rudge: A Tale of the Riots of 'Eighty by Charles Dickens. Poe borrows the complex rhythm and meter of Elizabeth Barrett's poem "Lady Geraldine's Courtship", and makes use of internal rhyme as well as alliteration throughout.

#OnThisDay in 1845, the public first experienced the "tapping, as of someone gently rapping, rapping at my chamber door" when Poe's The Raven was published in the NY Mirror. The eerie atmosphere and talking bird made Poe a household name, and remains the only poem to have inspired the name of a football team. (Seriously folks, let's have more literary team names, less racist stereotypes. Who's with me?) #HistoryGetsLIT

I got this as an e-book from the library. It was supposed to be illustrated, but apparently that did not apply to the e-book version, so that was pretty disappointing. I already felt pretty familiar with the poem, but I find it difficult not to just imagine Homer reading it from The Simpsons Treehouse of Horror.

Visited the wonderful Raven Cafe when visiting my parents this week in Michigan. The atmosphere is fantastic, though very crowded when we went. The food has great Poe names, and tasted amazing. If you‘re ever near Port Huron, MI, I really recommend stopping by.

My town is having a Grand Raven Festival this month, which is a bunch of spooky outside events! The library is participating in a Raven Walk, where a librarian takes a small group of people to various places in town to read the stanzas of Edgar Allan Poe's The Raven! Guess who offered to volunteer as tribute? 😁👐 I couldn't resist taking a picture with our Poe scarecrow too! I had so much fun being spooky and nerdy! 💖📚👻🐱🎃

Palimpsest 😁Ah! I love this! I would have volunteered too. Sounds like so much fun! 4y

On this day in 1845, “The Raven” was published! I‘m celebrating by reading as much Edgar Allen Poe as possible and making Cask of Amontillado jokes to uninterested coworkers.

My dad got me these fingerless reading gloves! The black ones having part of the story of The Raven by Edgar Allan Poe and the white ones have Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare on them! I ❤ them!

#Lost #NoFemmeber The Raven is my favorite work from Poe: it's so evocative- a vivid expression of the horrors behind grief. Amanda Palmer's 'Lost' is like the positive side of the same issue--instead of "Nevermore", your lost loved one pops in your mind to visit you occasionally. Palmer is as strong of a lyricist as she is a performer- the quote here isn't the best example, but I had to go with it because of the couch cushion connection ?

#BlackCatChallenge Day 7: While most are familiar with Poe‘s The #Raven, not many people may know about this Gustave Dore illustrated edition of Poe‘s Raven and other poems. This poem is definitely worth revisiting with Dore‘s vision that is able to effectively capture the grief and the ghastly appearance of the raven that utters nothing but Nevermore.
