Wow. After 4 months, I‘m finally done. I‘ve never taken this long to finish a book, but I‘m glad I took my time & annotated so thoroughly. D.H Lawrence was right, it is “one of the strangest and most wonderful books in the world.” 🌟5/5🌟

I don‘t finish every book I start. Some books I circle around and finish them eventually, but others I intentionally abandon.
The specific reasons might be varied (boring story, characters doing things that don‘t make sense, can‘t figure out what‘s going on, etc.) but usually boil down to I just don‘t care what happens.

Yes! I enjoy books that are aesthetically challenging & books that can challenge any preconceived notions I might have. It sounds cliche, but one of many reasons that I read is to have my horizons expanded. I have posted about the tagged book numerous times. After wanting to read it for years & years, I finally did so last year & it wound up as one of the greatest reading experiences of my life.

Apologies for the terrible photo, new phone causing angst!
So, first up for 2023 is this classic, chosen by book club.
I've tried listening to it, some years ago, and failed. I'm now 30% through the kindle version and taking some of it in 🤔😁📖

No. 11 in my '22 Modern Classics reads. Haven't read this since high school, and I don't remember it being this long! But I thoroughly enjoyed it, even if by today's standards it's a bit of a muddle. Because of Thanksgiving holiday travel I compromised and listened to parts of the book through Librivox and can highly recommend their version narrated by Stewart Wills. But I think it's best read not listened to.

Moby Dick. And I don‘t really know why. Maybe to seem impressive? 😅
#SundayFunday How about you?
Stopped by Barnes and nobles cause today is the day I went full out in actually treating myself since that hasn't happened in literally months. The Moby dick copy is not only pretty but soooo heavy that it's a legit brick. Very pretty brick. Will post more about it cause omg! The others are also pretty! Like omg! xD
Started this whale of a book after a recent cruise to the channel islands.
#OnThisDay in 1851 Moby-Dick was first published. Like many works of art, the novel would remain unrecognized during Melville's lifetime, selling only 3715 copies and earning the author a mere $556.37 before his death in 1891. A posthumous reprint garnered some critical interest, and slowly a following was built, leading to Carl Van Doren's 1921 claim that Moby-Dick was "one of the greatest... in the... literature of the world." #HistoryGetsLIT
I will write a full review this weekend, but having just finished I want to comment that spending the month with this has been one of the richest reading experiences of my entire life. 💙💙
☕ I have to say that despite having a second life as the name of a corporate coffee chain, Starbuck is one of my least favorite characters.
🫐I started the tagged book but didn‘t get very far. I think I bought it expecting to read it “some day.”🤦🏻♀️

I posted a couple of days ago about how I‘d never got around to reading Moby Dick and then, pretty much immediately, Phoebe reads a mystery posted the first chapter. I thought this was as good a time as any other to embark on the watery part of the world. Wish me luck!
Is anyone else listening?

Finally read this beast of a book! This space here is far too small to tell what I thought of this book. Suffice it to say, Moby Dick truly is probably one of the five greatest books ever written, and almost assuredly the greatest written by an American. If you wanna know my full thoughts on this masterpiece, you can check out my in-depth review/analysis of it at:

In closing, read this book if you haven‘t! 🤯
I was wondering about the relationship between Quequeg and Ishmael. Google came up with this. Crain asserts that Melville used "cannabalism" as a euphamism for "homosexuality."
This was an adventurous read. I always enjoy reading the classics. It was very interesting and full of adventure. I really enjoyed this book. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Thanks for the tag @Nessvamusic !!
1. Probably anything over 500pgs, but I have a lot of books that are more mental chunksters haha Like The Great Gatsby isn't that long, but I really hate that book so it feels like forever when I'm reading it.
2. I'm not a big audiobook person because my mind tends to wander, so I like to read them & I prefer physical books to ebooks as well, even for chunksters!!

Ishmael sets sail on the open sea with a man bent on getting Moby Dick, a whale who bit off his leg.
Overall I enjoyed listening to this book, I think it‘s way longer than necessary and could have cut out quite a bit without interfering with the story.
This...needed an editor. I'm glad I completed it but I'm not entirely sure why it's a classic, unless it's that it captures 19th century whaling in pretty excruciating (and unnecessary for the story) detail. There are certainly some parts that are very well written, but they almost get lost in the listing of whale sizes or similar matters.
This was a beast of a book. I'm happy I finally tackled it, but it really wasn't for me. However, it is one more book I've completed this #readathon. @DeweysReadathon
A couple Moby Dick prints for my Moby Dick/nautical inspired bathroom. Yes, I am one of *those* strange Moby Dick people.
Got them from this Etsy shop (and if Moby Dick isn‘t your thing, there are many other literary themed items): https://www.etsy.com/shop/DareToDreamPrints?ref=simple-shop-header-name&listing_...
You know social distancing and quarantining should be over when you start reading this for fun 😅
Ok ok, so I read this for a book club and I gutta say, it wasn‘t at all what I was expecting. There were some boring parts (unless you‘re into marine biology), but there were plenty of riveting dramatic moments, a lot more homo eroticism than I anticipated, and overall a huge amount of literary value that can be discussed for aaaagessss 🐋🌊🦿
This passage is an accurate representation of the book. So so so many details of details of details about whales. And yet, at 81% through the book, we have yet to see the actual great white whale. I‘m determined to finish, but I‘m ready for some action. I predict he will show up 10 pages from the end, there will be a big old battle, and everyone will die.
Some homemade cinnamon scones to accompany Moby Dick this morning.
I finally finished this book. I‘ve been reading it on and off for a while now. I thought the first half of the book was really good but the other half was more so-so. #mobydickbr
OK, I'm trying this one again. Any Melville lovers out there? I'm curious why this is such a beloved book.
About 40% done. Making progress. Still waiting on the appearance of the infamous whale. Will he live up to the hype? Time will tell...
And there is all the difference in the world between paying and being paid. The act of paying is perhaps the most uncomfortable infliction that the two orchard thieves entailed upon us. But being paid,— what will compare with it? The urbane activity with which a man receives money is really marvellous, considering that we so earnestly believe money to be the root of all earthly ills, and that on no account can a monied man enter heaven. #mobydick
Melville has some interesting thoughts... but comparing whales with wives 🤦🏻♀️😅 #mobydickbr #1001books
