Night and Day
Night and Day | Virginia Woolf
Katharine Hilbery is beautiful and privileged, but uncertain of her future. She must choose between becoming engaged to the oddly prosaic poet William Rodney, and her dangerous attraction to the passionate Ralph Denham. As she struggles to decide, the lives of two other women - women's rights activist Mary Datchet and Katharine's mother, Margaret, struggling to weave together the documents, events and memories of her own father's life into a biography - impinge on hers with unexpected and intriguing consequences. Virginia Woolf's delicate second novel is both a love story and a social comedy, yet it also subtly undermines these traditions, questioning a woman's role and the very nature of experience.

#TemptingTitles #WithAntonyms I wanted to read Virginia Woolfs novels in order . My public library system didn‘t have it at the time , I was shocked. Pre internet days, called around no local had it .So I drove to Tucson to a bookstore who, at the time , was frighteningly complete with backlists. It was there! This is that copy !

plemmdog Woolf is challenging but I like her. I haven‘t read this one. Good luck! 11mo

Don‘t you think a cold evening calls for a warm fire in the fireplace and a good book?

Have you read Day and Night by Virginia Woolf?

#virginiawoolf #restlessbooks #nightandday

SamAnne I have it and it is one of the few books of hers I‘ve not read! 3y
LinesUponAPage @SamAnne I‘m pretty sure you aren‘t alone. I haven‘t either. First time. 😉 3y

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ This was pretty good, and often funny. Some stark revelations about human nature along with the workings of love, marriage, and the pursuit of happiness. Like a Shakespearean comedy, all the characters seem to love the wrong person and fall in and out of love on a whim, which was a lot of fun.

heikemarie Do we have a time share on the same tortie?! 4y
Lylah @heikemarie she sneaks off to the basement for hours every day so tbh it‘s not impossible. Probably cashing in on double meals. 4y

A very bleak view on love! Anyone agree with this? 🤨

MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm I know of people that honestly think this. 😒 I for one am very happily married to my best friend. It takes work, as do all relationships, but it‘s definitely a closer bond because we have worked at it together. ❤️ 4y

I said a while back I wanted to read Virginia Woolf‘s novels in chronological order, and only made it through the first. Onto the second a couple years later—her signature style hasn‘t developed yet but hoping for a good read anyhow.

merelybookish Good luck! I read all her novels last year although not in order. It made me grow to love her more. 4y
Lylah @merelybookish where does this one rank?? I keep seeing mixed reviews & Austen comparisons. 4y
merelybookish It's middling. Honestly it took me a minute to remember it Still quite conventional in terms of plot and style although like The Voyage Out she is challenging the traditional marriage plot and what it means to be a woman. I think it's her next one, Jacob's Room, where her style begins to emerge, although it was my least favourite of her novels. 4y

Lylah @merelybookish thank you, that‘s helpful! It‘s going to take me forever to get through them but I‘m excited to get into some of the later stuff as I really loved To The Lighthouse, Orlando, & Mrs Dalloway in the past ☺️ 4y
merelybookish @Lylah Those three are undeniably her masterpieces! She somewhat returns to a more conventional style in her last two novels. 4y
SamAnne I‘m planning a Woolf read along beginning in October on both Litsy and Goodreads. Starting with Mrs. Dalloway. I just reread A Room of One‘s Own and decided it was time for a big reread 4y
Lylah @merelybookish that‘s interesting! I wonder why. 4y
Lylah @SamAnne awesome, I‘ll keep an eye out for it! Hope it goes well ☺️ 4y
merelybookish @Lylah I don't know. She is still playing with time. So one is set over several decades. And the other one takes place within a day. But neither of them are as stylistically innovative. I think she pushed her style to the limit in The Waves. And then focused on other areas? 4y
Lylah @merelybookish I see 🤔 I‘ll have to see for myself when I eventually get around to it haha 4y

I can see why this isn‘t many peoples favourites Virginia Woolf but I still loved it. It felt much more Edwardian, even more than the voyage out which was published earlier, but I liked getting to spend time in Katherine and Mary‘s heads and the writing about power, money and freedom for women was multifaceted and gorgeous even if a bit bleak.

New Book Thursday. I am so excited to read all of these international authors! Thank you, @RestlessBooks for the opportunity to read and review these books. I‘ll be posting these books individually over the next few weeks as i read and review the books. You have to see the beautiful and interesting covers that these illustrators have given to us readers. It was opening a Christmas present i squealed with glee on how cool these books look.

Moray_Reads @saresmoore I think it was the first Woolf I read. Less modernist than her later stuff but still exquisitely written 5y

Fifty pages to go...I look forward to finishing it this weekend! Renting an AirB&B to have a few days dedicated to reading and writing. Glorious!

Night and Day | Virginia Woolf

Although she had blunted her taste upon some form of philanthropy for twenty-five years, she had a fine natural instinct for an upstart or a pretender, and knew to a hairbreadth what literature should be and what it should not be. She was born to the knowledge, and scarcely thought it a matter to be proud of.

Woolf‘s works are full of these passionate, intellectual men whose love cannot be removed from judgement. Ralph Denham is like a young Peter Walsh, who is witty and passionate and “enchanting, perfectly enchanting!” But also, with his desire to master and see to the heart of every matter can make one feel “frivolous; empty-headed; a mere silly chatterbox.” No matter how exacting, there is a thrill in being loved by such a person. But can it last?

youneverarrived I can‘t believe that‘s a real cover for the Woolf one 😳 6y
monkeygirlsmama Dislike both covers, but dislike King‘s more. 6y
readordierachel @youneverarrived it came from the interwebs, so I suppose it could be a fan cover or something? Either way... 6y
readordierachel @monkeygirlsmama It's just so bizarre. 6y
elizabethlk Those are both awful but the Woolf one is definitely worse. My favourite bad cover will always be this one though. https://goo.gl/images/ZhWJqV 6y
jdenslow Tough call, but I think the World one is worse b/c the King cover sort of evokes a '70ish vibe, which fits the novel. 6y
BarbaraBB The Woolf is really ridiculous. Would the designer have read the book?! It is almost as stupid as yours, @elizabethlk 😂 6y
LeahBergen That Woolf is horrendous! 😂😂 6y
merelybookish Ah... definitely the Woolf! 6y
vivastory The Woolf! 😬 6y
readordierachel @elizabethlk That is hysterical. It's like they had am AI come up with it 😆😂 6y
readordierachel @jdenslow Good point! The King is at least slightly on brand. The Woolf is just nonsense. 6y
readordierachel @BarbaraBB I cannot imagine that someone who actually read a book by Virginia Woolf, any book, would create that cover. 6y
readordierachel @merelybookish @LeahBergen @vivastory I think we have a consensus 😂😂 6y

Mehso-so

"Learning what to leave out by putting it all in"- couldn't be a more accurate statement; having fallen in love with Woolf's later, more experimental novels made this one harder to read, however, there is always something reassuring in reading an earlier novel and being able to observe how far and long it takes a novelist to become a master and a voice.
