The Mermaid's Daughter
The Mermaid's Daughter: A Novel | Ann Claycomb
A modern-day expansion of Hans Christian Andersens The Little Mermaid, this unforgettable debut novel weaves a spellbinding tale of magic and the power of love as a descendent of the original mermaid fights the terrible price of saving herself from a curse that has affected generations of women in her family. Kathleen has always been dramatic. She suffers from the bizarre malady of experiencing stabbing pain in her feet. On her sixteenth birthday, she woke screaming from the sensation that her tongue had been cut out. No doctor can find a medical explanation for her pain, and even the most powerful drugs have proven useless. Only the touch of seawater can ease her pain, and just temporarily at that. Now Kathleen is a twenty-five-year-old opera student in Boston and shows immense promise as a soprano. Her girlfriend Harry, a mezzo in the same program, worries endlessly about Kathleen's phantom pain and obsession with the sea. Kathleen's mother and grandmother both committed suicide as young women, and Harry worries they suffered from the same symptoms. When Kathleen suffers yet another dangerous breakdown, Harry convinces Kathleen to visit her hometown in Ireland to learn more about her family history. In Ireland, they discover that the mysteryand the tragedyof Kathleens family history is far older and stranger than they could have imagined. Kathleens fate seems sealed, and the only way out is a terrible choice between a mermaids two sirensthe sea, and her lover. But both choices mean death Haunting and lyrical, The Mermaids Daughter askshow far we will go for those we love? And can the transformative power of music overcome a magic that has prevailed for generations?

Hooked into The Mermaid's Daughter by Ann Claycomb, a sapphic urban fairy tale telling the story of the great, great, great, great granddaughter of the little mermaid, cursed with terrible pain every step she takes and a longing for the sea.

An interesting remake of Hans Christian Anderson‘s Little Mermaid. Except for the sex, this was a really great story. I loved the ending most of all. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I love my #sockswap package!!!
It was so clever to make a theme package (wish I had thought of it) and I adore the mermaids.
I think I'll save the book and the socks for my summer beach trip. They will be perfect.
Thanks so much!!

A unique modern day retelling of The Little Mermaid tying Hans Christian Andersen's morbid tale to having met a mermaid during his lifetime, and his story keeping her alive longer than the curse has since been able to do. A cast of characters working tirelessly to break an 8 generation old curse to save the current mermaid stricken with sickness. Told in several parts coming together to give an opera to portray the story on stage. #mermaid

#ReadingResolutions #stage I read this book last year for a book tour review and was intrigued by this 'modern-day expansion' of Hans Christian Andersen's dark fairytale. The main character Kathleen is an opera student & a big part of the story & setting is the staging of an opera based on The Little Mermaid, being written by the main character's composer father and starring Kathleen. Dark, haunting and beautiful. 💙

A heartbreaking, engrossing, trope-flipping fairy tale that includes: an emphasis on the importance of family narratives, an in-depth exploitation of opera I never knew I needed, a rather scathing "review" of the often-lacking medical approach to mental health, and a refreshingly-normalized LGBTQ+ romance (or two) at the very heart of the story. Bravo to Ann for this gorgeous debut novel. I can't wait to see what she writes next!

Overall, it had such good potential, but ended up being pretty blah. I didn't care for the author's writing style, there was something almost disconnected about it. I started to get hooked near the middle and then it lost me again, but I was in too deep at that point to throw in the towel. The opera was long and drawn out, the ending was rushed, and the overall story explanation was weak.

It's absolutely beautiful. Ann Claycomb writes an opera that I feel like I've just watched and would love to watch all at the same time. I would recommend to any fairytale lovers and anyone who enjoyed Queen of the Night.

Finished my first book for the #springcleaningreadathon and I loved it! A birthday present from @bookish_wookish it's a retelling of The Little Mermaid, the original bloody HCA story, as a modern magical realism story involving opera, composers, singers & Ireland. It was beautifully told & I found myself tearing through the last few chapters to find out the ending, which was perfect! For lovers of mermaids, Garden Spells & Practical Magic.⚓️🐳🐚

Unique, modern retelling of The Little Mermaid by Hans Christian Andersen-as dark or darker than the original fairy tale. Set in the world of music/opera & told by several viewpoints-music student/singer Kathleen, her girlfriend Harry (Harriet), Robin, her composer father & a group of sea-witches. Beautiful & imaginative-the story & characters kept me engaged. 📚🍴Paired with a Shrimp Salad Sandwich for my blog book tour review. Link to recipe👇🏼

DebinHawaii @Hooked_on_books Yes, I think. I had to follow up yesterday when I didn't hear back. The Customer Service person was nice & apologized & said he was sending out 2 new books immediately (priority mail) & would email me with the tracking number as soon as they had it & sent an email saying the same. I didn't get an email so I followed up today about 5PM EST as I didn't want it to go the weekend & got an email about 45 min later w/a tracking number. (edited) 8y
DebinHawaii @Hooked_on_books that showed it went out right before the email was sent. Don't know when it will arrive yet but at the moment I give the service a 'B' so far for me having to initiate the follow up twice & no 'we are giving you a credit for the hassle' or some other surprise & delight. I am a big customer service person & may judge more harshly but I felt like I was bothering them about it versus them being proactive. If that makes sense. 😬 (edited) 8y
Hooked_on_books That makes complete sense! I'm glad they're sending more out, but I agree they should have done a bit more. Perhaps you'll have a chance to fill out a survey and can let them know that. With some companies, I've actually had good responses from my survey answers after this type of problem. 8y
Lizpixie bookdepository.com have fantastic customer service, which is one of the reasons I buy so much from them. They've replaced boxes of books, no questions asked twice when auspost has lost them, within 24hrs of my initial email as well. And they follow up with consecutive emails until the new books arrive. If you don't have great service, how can you expect loyal customers? 8y
DebinHawaii @Hooked_on_books @Lizpixie I agree. It's not bad service by any means but it hasn't been as stellar as I expected from what others have said. On the bright side, I am writing & facilitating a customer service class for the city & county here in April & they have given me a good recent example/case study about service recovery & taking ok/decent customer service to outstanding. 👍😆 8y

A mermaid among the flowers! This lyrical women's fiction novel by talented newcomer Ann Claycomb is remarkable not only for its careful and beautiful weaving of fantastical elements, but also because of the emotional complexities of each and every character. Coming out in April, this book deserves a place on everyone's shelf!
