Hooked into The Mermaid's Daughter by Ann Claycomb, a sapphic urban fairy tale telling the story of the great, great, great, great granddaughter of the little mermaid, cursed with terrible pain every step she takes and a longing for the sea.

This is actually on the docket for March but I may get to it this month depending on how things go. We shall see 😉

I loved this so much. I‘m a sucker for retellings and this rendition was so unique and well thought out!
Current read for my quick trip to Windsor to drop off some luggage before I head back to BC for the holidays!
An interesting remake of Hans Christian Anderson‘s Little Mermaid. Except for the sex, this was a really great story. I loved the ending most of all. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
What my morning looks like. Later I will have to be more active but for now we are relaxing.
Currently reading. I hate when book stores put stickers on books!!!

I hope you have a fantastic day, sweetie! 💜🧜🏼♀️

Picked this beauty up at the airport, such a great read! I could not put it down! It‘s a good continuation of the original Hans Christian Anderson little mermaid. Totally recommend
@StephanieGeiser
I love my #sockswap package!!!
It was so clever to make a theme package (wish I had thought of it) and I adore the mermaids.
I think I'll save the book and the socks for my summer beach trip. They will be perfect.
Thanks so much!!
@JPeterson
A unique modern day retelling of The Little Mermaid tying Hans Christian Andersen's morbid tale to having met a mermaid during his lifetime, and his story keeping her alive longer than the curse has since been able to do. A cast of characters working tirelessly to break an 8 generation old curse to save the current mermaid stricken with sickness. Told in several parts coming together to give an opera to portray the story on stage. #mermaid
#ReadingResolutions #stage I read this book last year for a book tour review and was intrigued by this 'modern-day expansion' of Hans Christian Andersen's dark fairytale. The main character Kathleen is an opera student & a big part of the story & setting is the staging of an opera based on The Little Mermaid, being written by the main character's composer father and starring Kathleen. Dark, haunting and beautiful. 💙
I am curled up with my new blanket!! Thanks again @nelehelen !!! 💖
Turkey is eaten, my Amazon cart is full of Christmas gifts...now to read! I‘m loving the mix of music and fairy tale in The Mermaid‘s Daughter, and it‘s the perfect day for it to start getting really good! #currentlyreading
A heartbreaking, engrossing, trope-flipping fairy tale that includes: an emphasis on the importance of family narratives, an in-depth exploitation of opera I never knew I needed, a rather scathing "review" of the often-lacking medical approach to mental health, and a refreshingly-normalized LGBTQ+ romance (or two) at the very heart of the story. Bravo to Ann for this gorgeous debut novel. I can't wait to see what she writes next!
Overall, it had such good potential, but ended up being pretty blah. I didn't care for the author's writing style, there was something almost disconnected about it. I started to get hooked near the middle and then it lost me again, but I was in too deep at that point to throw in the towel. The opera was long and drawn out, the ending was rushed, and the overall story explanation was weak.
It's absolutely beautiful. Ann Claycomb writes an opera that I feel like I've just watched and would love to watch all at the same time. I would recommend to any fairytale lovers and anyone who enjoyed Queen of the Night.
Sunday delivery! I can't wait to get to this summer read. New book from a colleague based on the little mermaid.
Finished my first book for the #springcleaningreadathon and I loved it! A birthday present from @bookish_wookish it's a retelling of The Little Mermaid, the original bloody HCA story, as a modern magical realism story involving opera, composers, singers & Ireland. It was beautifully told & I found myself tearing through the last few chapters to find out the ending, which was perfect! For lovers of mermaids, Garden Spells & Practical Magic.⚓️🐳🐚
My next read is this modern retelling of The Little Mermaid (the original dark version by HCA) which was a birthday gift from @bookish_wookish Kathleen is a soprano who's been plagued by stabbing pains in her feet, which only seawater helps soothe since she was a child. After a breakdown, her girlfriend Harry takes her to Ireland to investigate her family history for a cure. My #LRC19 #LGBTQlove book for #LitsyReadingChallenge
Thank you to another of our #litmail PBC members @bookish_wookish for this brilliant book that's been on my Wishlist for awhile. This years birthday has been so good thanks to the loving & bighearted members of not just my PBC but all the Littens that wished me a happy birthday. I was very happy to be able to pay it forward with my giveaway, and I hope it inspires others to do the same.
THANK YOU!🎉🎉
When you go to the book store to waste some time perusing shelves and you find a LGBTQ retelling(/sequel?) to the Little Mermaid. 😍😍😍 #prettycover #thatcovertho
Unique, modern retelling of The Little Mermaid by Hans Christian Andersen-as dark or darker than the original fairy tale. Set in the world of music/opera & told by several viewpoints-music student/singer Kathleen, her girlfriend Harry (Harriet), Robin, her composer father & a group of sea-witches. Beautiful & imaginative-the story & characters kept me engaged. 📚🍴Paired with a Shrimp Salad Sandwich for my blog book tour review. Link to recipe👇🏼
Having the traditional St. Paddy's Day dinner of a brown rice bowl w/stir-fried leek & snow peas, grilled tomatoes & mahi mahi 🐟 w/Heidi Swanson's Lemon Miso Compound Butter (for the blog). 😆☘ OK, not very Irish-but quite delicious. Recovering from a busy & tiring week by staying in tonight, starting this ARC I am reviewing next week & hopefully getting a good night's sleep--and maybe some ice cream later but no green beer!☘🍺 #wildfridaynight
I've seen this on the Audiobook app and I'm really intrigued. Seems like it is a new take on the Little Mermaid fairytale. Anyone has read it?
One of the coolest, most intelligent women I know--who also happens to be the wife of my academic mentor--just released her first novel. I'm so proud of this rad lady and ready to harass her for her autograph. ;)
Today's been an interesting day, that's for sure. Just spent 20 minutes "sheltering in place" waiting for an all clear on a hunt for an armed suspect in the area. Fortunately I had good company with the pets and today's read. (Note the other mermaid bookmark, Zoraida Cordova's The Vicious Deep!) #catsoflitsy
@WilliamMorrow
Just showed up- always seems to be feast or famine when it comes to ARC - not complaining though 😂
A mermaid among the flowers! This lyrical women's fiction novel by talented newcomer Ann Claycomb is remarkable not only for its careful and beautiful weaving of fantastical elements, but also because of the emotional complexities of each and every character. Coming out in April, this book deserves a place on everyone's shelf!
