Yellow Wallpaper (Revised)
Yellow Wallpaper (Revised) | Charlotte Perkins Gilman
23 posts | 84 read | 29 to read
Charlotte Perkins Gilman was America's leading feminist intellectual of the early twentieth century. 'The Yellow Wall-Paper' and Other Stories makes available the fullest selection of her short fiction ever printed. In addition to her pioneering masterpiece, 'The Yellow Wall-Paper' (1890), which draws on her own experience of depression and insanity, this edition features her Impress 'story studies', works in the manner of writers such as James, Twain, and Kipling. These stories, together with other fiction from her neglected California period (1890-5), throw new light on Gilman as a practitioner of the art of fiction. In her Forerunner stories she repeatedly explores the situation of the 'woman of fifty' and inspires reform by imagining workable solutions to a range of personal and social problems. The introduction to this edition places Gilman in the cultural and historical context of the American divided self, her Beecher heritage, and her contribution to the female Gothic.

This short story packs a punch! It‘s been loitering on my “short audiobook” shelf - and I decided to listen to it to finish up my work day and 👀

slategreyskies This is probably my favorite short story. It‘s the first short story that had a big impact on me. 💛 8mo
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @slategreyskies, I can see why! I‘ll certainly be thinking about it for awhile. The first short story i remember having a big impact was a Roald Dahl one - Lamb to the slaughter. 8mo

I haven‘t read this since college & have been wanting to revisit it, but the parallels between rest cures & pacing for chronic illness made it the scariest thing on my list & I wasn‘t sure if I was brave enough to pick it up. I‘m glad I did though both because it‘s a masterpiece of horror & feminist literature, & because my memory of it changed enough over the last few decades that it was like reading it for the first time all over again.

Emilymdxn Great review! The first time I read this I was an unwell 16yo staying in a hotel in Seattle with garish patterned wallpaper. It wasn't yellow, but sort of lime green was close enough for me to get well and truly freaked out 1y
Lindy It‘s time for me to reread this because I forgot there‘s a horror element! @Emilymdxn (edited) 1y

My high schooler is reading "The Yellow Wallpaper" for a class, and it turns out her BA-in-English mother has five copies of the story around the house. (I suspect the high schooler will read the one linked online by her teacher.)

TiredLibrarian I love my Norton Anthologies; still have them after 30+ years! 📚 3y
ImperfectCJ @TiredLibrarian I graduated in 1997; I refuse to count how many years that's been. 😐 All I know is it's long enough that I'd almost forgotten how thin that paper is! 3y
Tamra One of my favorites too! 3y

BookNAround Ooo. I always forget to check my Nortons for short stories. I need to try and remember them as resources. 3y
ravenlee I‘m so glad you posted this! I was thinking recently I should read this story and wondering vaguely where to find it…I have that Norton anthology of women‘s lit! 🤦🏻‍♀️ 3y
ravenlee Oh my god…and The Story and Its Writer… I seriously need to look at the books on my shelves… 3y
LiteraryinPA Nice! I remember teaching this to high schoolers some years ago. 💗 3y
quanners I wish that I had kept my Norton‘s from university. 3y
slategreyskies I love that story. I still remember the first time I read it. I must‘ve underlined half the story while reading it. I recognized myself and my experience in it, I suppose. 3y

Maybe I‘m just as deranged as the narrator, but she cracks me up. I remember reading this story in undergrad and it‘s very interesting. The narrator just seems so innocent until she‘s creeping over her fainted husband, which is truly just the funniest image.

alisiakae I love this story! 🎃 3y
MsRadioSilence I think this also satisfies one of the requirements for Tier 3 Bateman (written by a female author) of the Read Like Hellathon! 3y

nanuska_153 😂I bought a house recently and ALL THE ROOMS were painted yellow. Needless to say that's the first thing we changed 3y
marleed @nanuska_153 I bet it feels good to make your home your own. When I bought my house 3 years ago, the staging and was adorable. But when I moved my stuff within the many different colored walls just didn‘t work and drove me crazy. I painted everything, even the cupboards white. Then I came back and painted the open dining room and another accent wall green. Now I lived with my green walls through a pandemic and feel a need to paint again! (edited) 3y
Cazxxx @nanuska_153 yikes 😬. I don‘t fancy yellow walls lol 3y

Cazxxx @marleed I love green! 💚 3y
nanuska_153 @marleed it really does! I guess even if they were of a colour that I'd like more it could have happened the same thing that happened to you and really not go with our stuff. I'm happy with the result anyway! You should change colours if you feel like it, it's the advantage of owning a house, you can do whatever you want, and painting makes a room so different! It's like having a new house again! 3y
nanuska_153 @Cazxxx I know! It was a horrible yellow too and everywhere... it looked like they found lots of it on sale (probably because nobody else wanted to buy it 😅) 3y
Cazxxx @nanuska_153 out of all the colours I think yellow would be the one that I‘d want to paint my house the least! 😅 3y

I really wanted to like this collection, but it wasn't grabbing me. Since I'm in a reading slump it's time to move on.

5feet.of.fury I read The Yellow Wallpaper in college and enjoyed it, but nothing else by the author 3y
PurpleyPumpkin I read The Yellow Wallpaper on Serial Reader but didn‘t enjoy it at all, not sure why. 🤷🏽‍♀️Maybe it just wasn‘t the right time. 3y

It's been 8 years since I first read this. I can't imagine what it would be like being locked away and told to do nothing "stimulating" and just sit there and stress. It would drive the best of us mad. But of course, we're women so when have our illnesses been taken seriously?

This will count as my second read of the year. I read it on #serialreader and made the little thing on bookerly cause I really want to do the #pennyperpage thing seriously

This Penguin Little Black Classic consists of 3 short stories so in addition to The Yellow Wall-Paper, there‘s The Rocking Chair and Old Water.

All 3 are chilling and horrifying.

AmyG They were really creepy, indeed. 5y

This story makes me shiver in so many ways.
It‘s sad that my first thought was that how we deal with mental illnesses absolutely hasn‘t changed in some aspects since 1892.

But I liked this short story. It reminded me of an “X-Factor”-episode where a kid turns into a doll, in the end. (That‘s what I recall, details may differ.)

I am sure this story will linger in my mind for a while.

Holy sh!t... I thought I would just casually read this while I was sipping on my coffee this morning seeing as it's only 16 pages. I was NOT prepared for that magnitude of insanity, and my mind is blown. If you haven't read this, I definitely recommend it. This is something that I'll think about a lot and probably teach in my future literature classes.

BarbaraBB Great review and yes, only 16 pages but packed with all the feelings! 5y
Buechersuechtling Your existimation makes me want to read it. But, sorry, not sorry, 15 € ($ 17) for 64 pages is way too much for my meagre wallet. 😟 5y
Rachel.Rencher @Buechersuechtling Oh man, I found it for $1! Here it is to read for free online, though. 😉 5y

Chrissyreadit I had my daughter read it- it def makes one think. And to be honest, for modern time I compare it to solitary confinement in prison. 5y

Rachel.Rencher @Chrissyreadit Yes! That is such a good comparison. 5y

Laughing at myself because I ordered what I *thought* was a novel on Amazon for $1, and then I get the skinniest book I've ever seen. Someone published a 15 page short story on its own. 🤣 This is supposed to be a short story, right? Like it's not just a weird misprint, chapter preview thing?

Valeka It‘s a short story that was published in the 1890‘s or so. Early feminist literature that is coming back to the forefront because of the current state of affairs in our country. It‘s a good one! (edited) 5y
Tamra This is the creepiest read for me, up there with The Lottery in how disturbing it was on first read. 👍🏾👍🏾 5y

A different interpretation of the #Yellow song lyrics. #JulyColdPlay

"The color is repellent, almost revolting: a smoldering unclean yellow, strangely faded by the slow-turning sunlight."

A great gothic literature read considered to be one of the first Feminist stories.
