If you have read and enjoyed other somewhat saccharine children's stories from the 1880s, you will probably enjoy this one as well. A simple story about a girl born on Christmas day but is always delicate and weak and only lives to be 10 years old. Along the way she tries to make life better for her poor neighbors through her warmth and generosity. A lovely story but Carol was not believable as a 10-year-old to me haha I also wasn't surprised ⬇️

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) to find out that this was originally written to be a play - it definitely has that feel to it, especially the scene where the mother of the poor children is giving them instructions on how to behave at “the big house“. A perfectly pleasant little story with a bittersweet ending. 3y

keys_on_fire Love this! And the more I get to know you, the more I see we have in common. I grew up playing a Baldwin piano!! 3y
TheAromaofBooks @keys_on_fire - It's actually THE piano I grew up on, as this is the one my grandparents gave my mom when she got married. Funnily enough, I actually have my own piano... an upright grand... but it's way too big for my house, so Mom and I have swapped for now LOL I never seem to find the time to play any more anyway!! 3y

It's the last day of November, which means #WinterGames start tomorrow!!!! Time to set some goals for a couple of the month-long readathons!!

To hit my GR goal for the year, I need to read 30 books. And because I like being ridiculous, I've decided to up the goal to 40 books for this readathon. A lot of the books I have on my TBR for the month are on the short side (like the tagged) so this doesn't feel completely unreasonable!!

@PuddleJumper

PuddleJumper Good luck! 3y

I have a long-standing sentimental connection to this book; I guess I always will. Carol Bird is born at Christmas as the church choir nearby sang carols; hence her name. While still young, she becomes ill and ultimately bedridden, but brings meaningful joy to everyone she meets. My 3rd grade teacher read this to us one December, a bit each day...

Come-read-with-me @eggs Oh my goodness I had completely forgotten about The Bird‘s Christmas Carol. I remember reading it as a child and just loving it. Looks like I‘ll be digging through some boxes to find my copy! Thank you for bringing back a wonderful memory! 💖 5y
Eggs Awww me too Paula. We had a young, lovely teacher in 3rd grade who read this to us during December. I wonder if she ever knew what lovely memories this gave us that lasted our whole lives @Come-read-with-me 5y

This is a play on words from a beloved childhood book though Why anyone thought this would be a lovely children‘s story is beyond me. So very sad. #birdsofparadise #winterwonderland

Cinfhen That does sound awfully depressing 😬 6y
TrishB I don‘t think my kids would have wanted as a bed time story! 6y
Chrissyreadit @Cinfhen @TrishB I think death was romanticized in that time? I guess even for children- but today I would only recommend it for a college class on death and dying. Im sure I ordered it from scholastic- and probably it was the cheapest book so I was allowed to 🤣 6y

Combining #redbooks and #jinglebells for a belated #SeasonsReadings post! I seem to have a disproportionally high number of red books on my “cool old books” shelves. These are just a few... with a couple of lovely Christmas books atop the pile!

At a library book sale, I stumbled on this #Christmas story I remember reading as a child. #12daysofXmas #carol #seasonsreadings It's as saccharine as I remember it but definitely of its era in praise of Christian piety and putting the #joy of others first on Xmas. Fun fact: author self-published and sold to raise $$ for her San Francisco school in 1886, before going on to write the book she is best known for, Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm, in 1903.

Betty Thanks for reminding me of this 8y
