A lord in danger. A magician in turmoil. A snowball in hell. A Charm of Magpies, Book 1 Exiled to China for twenty years, Lucien Vaudrey never planned to return to England. But with the mysterious deaths of his father and brother, it seems the new Lord Crane has inherited an earldom. Hes also inherited his familys enemies. He needs magical assistance, fast. He doesnt expect it to turn up angry. Magician Stephen Day has good reason to hate Cranes family. Unfortunately, its his job to deal with supernatural threats. Besides, the earl is unlike any aristocrat hes ever met, with the tattoos, the attitude...and the way Crane seems determined to get him into bed. Thats definitely unusual. Soon Stephen is falling hard for the worst possible man, at the worst possible time. But Cranes dangerous appeal isnt the only thing rendering Stephen powerless. Evil pervades the house, a web of plots is closing round Crane, and if Stephen cant find a way through ittheyre both going to die. Warning: Contains hot m/m sex between a deeply inappropriate earl and a very confused magician, dark plots in a magical version of Victorian England, family values (not the good kind), and a lot of swearing.

Wow. I love these books. I lost myself in Charles‘ world. I was happy that Lucien and Stephen found one another, and also angry that they had to hide their relationship. Also, they treat the women in their lives as equals: Stephen has been partnered with the Jewish Esther Gold for five years, and Lucien is great friends with the beautiful, wily Leonora Hart. A terrific historical paranormal murder mystery romance. #mm #romance #fantasy #magic

I love the way Lucien is... forceful, in a way he has that arrogant confidence of his breeding... but he also very fiercely cares about everything that his family did not. He might pin Stephen to a wall, but only as long as he really wants to be there.

First square for #BookSpinBingo! I've got books on the go for that whole column, oops.

I've been planning an epic reread of K.J. Charles' work in order, so I've started on this. Very comforting and familiar, even as the stuff happening in the story is horrible. 😅

I've set up my #BookSpinBingo card, as usual... I might try to go for last month's six bingos again -- I've placed the TBR signs to point their way to the 3 verticals, 2 horizontals, and 1 diagonal I've marked out as possible.

Maybe I could even get the left vertical...?

Haven't read something this fast in well over a year.
Good : The plot. It keeps you reading. You want to know what happens next. There are no "dull" moments. The main characters are vivid, interesting and most of all for me, present. The world building is good. You slowly get the information as is Crane. Okay: The romance. I bought it. Still, it was quite fast and sudden. But that's me and it's knitpicking.

Made the mistake of picking this up at 11:30, fully knowing that we switched to summertime last night, and wasn't able to put it down until 1. I'm /tired/ today 😴 was it worth it, though? Absolutely. #20in4

I loved this series so much! It's like a dark fairytale and got me hooked not only on everything by K.J. Charles, but also on Historicals and M/M Romance in general. Btw., the first book is free on the Zon and comes with a super cheap audiobook (and the narration is amazing!): https://lovelyaudiobooks.info/free-romance-novels-with-audiobooks/

This was a fun fantasy/mystery/historical romance mash-up that I accidentally finished in a couple of hours once I started reading it in earnest. It really does need a content warning for self-harm and suicide, though, particularly the beginning section.

It's free on Kindle, and entertained me enough that I'll probably pick up the sequel.

This was my #BookSpin pick for this month. Thanks as always, @TheAromaofBooks!

I couldn't resist diving into this after @Centique reported on the second book in the series and now I just want to devour all of them! I'm not much for magic and the supernatural but I love the way KJ Charles writes, especially the dialogue. So much fun.

SaturnDoo 👀👀I really like this cover ❤ 5y
Centique I‘m so glad you liked it! Great characters I reckon - and I thought the magic was described in quite a physical way. I liked that it doesn‘t come easily. I‘m not fond of the sort of easy fairytale magic where there‘s just a swish of a wand and things fall into place. 5y
CarolynM @Centique Most of her characters have to work for what they have one way or another. I agree that the physicality of the magic makes it more convincing. I was reluctant to start this series because the other "magic" type book of hers I read was really weird (though still well written) -tagged - but this is more like her others but with magic. 5y

This was a ripping yarn that kept me turning the pages to find out what would happen next. At first I found the romance elements an irritating distraction from the occult curse mystery but the disparate elements blended together very nicely in the last few chapters.

Ok, I finished Any Old Diamonds and wow! Alec and Jerry are HOT - sexy times are about giving up control, all consensual. I love how consent is used so clearly now, compared to what I recall reading as a kid. Decades old suspicious deaths, thievery, sexy times, betrayal, oh my!

Note: This is my first time using Bookly. I found trying to time my reading was awkward and probably not very accurate.

I read Magpie Lord over a year ago and I think I‘ll read it again so I can catch up on the series. In the meantime I‘m reading Any Old Diamonds, which was recently released. There‘s a thief. I like thieves. I‘m also using Bookly for the first time because I want to make cool infographics and I think that‘s the only way I‘m gonna make that happen.

Get ready, this fantastical fantasy/mystery mashup is hot & more than a little entertaining. Lucien Vaudrey is in danger & fears he will soon be dead unless he gets help figuring out what is going on. Enter Stephen Day who can help if he can get over the fact it‘s a Vaudrey who needs his help. The plot thickens & sparks fly as old resentments are forgotten & new bonds formed as they race to solve the mystery. The plot is thin but the fun is real.

I needed a #romantsy break and this m/m tale of a magician called in to save a lord was a fun romp. There were great characters with sharp sarcasm that really made me laugh. I would have liked a longer, more developed plot around the magic (cos it was fab🙌) but that‘s just my #currentmood. And 🔥🔥🔥 all the flames for level of heat. 😂

tournevis @Centique Good. Because the first volume had like two short scenes. 7y
Centique @tournevis this has at least three, although I‘m not sure if they count as short. (I haven‘t read many authors in the genre) Have you read K & B Ritchie? I was amused at how long the sex scenes go on for. They‘re great writers though. An m/m one is 7y
Centique @tournevis In some books their characters are a bit too young and angsty for me, but otherwise excellent. I loved 7y

Read the accompanying short story (felt more like an epilogue) this morning and immediately bought book 2. Historical m/m romance with magic yes please. I want more books like this. This is a fun, very fast paced book. Pretty much every night I had to bully myself into putting it down to go to sleep, rather tha just staying up all night to finish it. I finished it this morning accompanied by a #littenkitten who would really like to point out that she, too, enjoys milk, and would be happy to dispose of any cereal milk I didn't want. #catsoflitsy

Suzze 🐱💕 My Tink hates people food, but cereal milk makes her one happy kitty. 8y
bates_barb @Suzze Sadly I keep her eternally frustrated on her milk quest. She's lactose intolerant, so, if I gave her the milk, she'd promptly throw it back up. Cleaning up kitty vomit is not high on my list of most enjoyable activities, so I just don't give it to her. It doesn't stop her from showing up every morning to try to convince me to give it to her today. 8y

Someone is using a dark magic to try to kill Lord Crane. Only magical practitioner Stephen Day may be able to stop them... and then sparks fly between them. 💕 Honestly this didn't feel like a romance novel to me because the focus was so much more on the magic and mystery and MAN it gets creepy for a minute. But the romance was endearing, and this was a really fun read. I think I'll check out more in the series.

Turned to this in desperation after two days in our house of plague - thus far, surprisingly engrossing! Fascinating magic system in a Victorian-ish setting, with a (fairly steamy) male/male romance plot that has interesting things to say about power imbalance.
