Mad Miss Mimic
Mad Miss Mimic | Sarah Henstra
19 posts | 9 read | 27 to read
Born into an affluent family, Leo outwardly seems like a typical daughter of English privilege in the 1870s: she lives with her wealthy married sister Christabel, and lacks for neither dresses nor trinkets. But Leo has a crippling speech impediment that makes it difficult for her to speak but curiously allows her to mimic other people's voices flawlessly. Servants and ladies alike call her "Mad Miss Mimic" behind her back... and watch as she unintentionally scares off every potential suitor. Only the impossibly handsome Mr. Thornfax seems interested in Leo...but why? And does he have a connection to the mysterious Black Glove group that has London in its terrifying grasp? Trapped in a city under siege by terror attacks and gripped by opium fever, where doctors (including her brother-in-law) race to patent an injectable formula, Leo must search for truth in increasingly dangerous situations - but to do so, she must first find her voice.

Pickpick

Mad Miss Mimic is a very, very good book but it will make you work for it. It's well written, well edited & the imagery is just phenomenal but it's not a "fluffy" YA.

Henstra's portrayal of drug addiction, evil & complicity in evil are second to none & her excoriation of the media has to be read, it's simply brilliant.

This is not an easy read per se, I'll grant you, but it is a brilliant book and I highly recommend it.

I confess to finding this book....difficult. The protagonist is a very authentic 17y/o & the setting immaculately researched but I think that's almost what's so hard about it. I wince at what I know are actual insults for stutterers. I am incensed at what I know is a historical truth, that women married very young in the hopes of some measure of "freedom" but her portrayal of evil & complicity is second to none & it's a very good book. #conflicted

Lunch with my parents before they headed off to the airport ended with wandering up the street to the Half Price Books warehouse sale (my book obsession is genetic). I showed admirable restraint, and only filled one bag. I got all of these plus some DVDs, a couple CDs, and a few things on vinyl for $20. I'm very pleased with some of the hardcovers I found! (Rampant is because @JennyReadsBooks keeps telling me I need to read it.)

Leftcoastzen Nice haul! 7y
Texreader Wow what a haul!! 7y

There are things I cannot say in any voice.
I was born Leonora Emmaline Somerville, but I am not at all sure that is still who I am. 💕

Has anyone read Mad Miss Mimic? It sounds so intriguing - a mix of Jane Austen meets Arthur Conan Doyle! Very much looking forward to this one 💕

kingdomofbookss The book sounds interesting and omg the cover is so gorgeous😍 7y
conniereads @kingdomofbookss I agree! It was definitely a cover buy, but the blurb sounds brilliant!! 😄 7y
GlassAsDiamonds I'm reading it at the moment - I really like it but sometimes the historical accuracy of the main characters situation is hard to bear ("freedom" through marriage!). I know it's true & the author has clearly done her homework but.... ouch!! 7y

QOTD: Would you rather be permanently transported 500 years into the future or permanently transported 500 years in the past?

To me the 1500's by in large don't seem that great, especially for females… So I think I'd go to the future and hope for the best 😉

And this book sounds amazing, thank you so much for sending it to me @penguincanada I can't wait to start it.

hike.read.repeat Haha same! 7y
JanuarieTimewalker13 I would like to go back to the 70s for a month. Then the 80s for a month...and so on. I figure if reincarnation exists, I'll be in the future soon enough. Lol 7y
Laalaleighh If we can get rid of climate issues and such im gonna say future. I like having rights. 7y
bookwrm526 I'm going to say future, though we have no idea what's coming it would be fun to find out, and I'm pretty sure I'd be dead already if I lived in the 1500s lol 7y

I had to have dental surgery this morning and it sucked, so I bought some books to cheer myself up. 🤘🏻🖤📚

pocketmermaid Every time I go to the dentist, I comfort myself by visiting the used bookstore which is in the building right next door. ❤ 7y
DivineDiana @pocketmermaid How convenient! 7y
pocketmermaid @DivineDiana I know, right? And it's run by volunteers and all the money they make supports the hospital, which is across the street. So I never have to feel guilty about how much I spend. 💸 7y

I gave this one a valiant effort but I COULDN'T get into it and that super bummed me out :( I wish I had been able to, but it wasn't a page turner for me and it took too long to pick up.

If you love Jane Austen or Sherlock, try this book. A smart young lady named Leonora, Leo for short, struggles with a stammer and she compensates by becoming a mimic of other people's voices. Charmed by a handsome, rich and seemingly good Lord, Leo gets swept into an opium plot that threatens to blow up London. Suspenseful & fast paced, this book was fun to read and kept me guessing, as well as hoping that Leo would find her happily every after.

Eyelit You had me at Jane Austen (but the Sherlock is also enticing)... stacked! 😃 7y
