The Polygamist's Daughter
The Polygamist's Daughter: A Memoir | Anna Lebaron
26 posts | 30 read | 65 to read
My father had more than fifty children. So begins the haunting memoir of Anna LeBaron, daughter of the notorious polygamist and murderer Ervil LeBaron. With her father wanted by the FBI for killing anyone who tried to leave his culta radical branch of MormonismAnna and her siblings were constantly on the run with the other sister-wives. Often starving and always desperate, the children lived in terror. Even though there were dozens of them together, Anna always felt alone. She escaped when she was thirteen . . . but the nightmare was far from over. A shocking true story of murder, fear, and betrayal, The Polygamists Daughter is also the heart-cry of a fatherless girl and her search for love, faith, and a safe place to call home.

Author story is one of incredible courage and survival. Growing up in a polygamist cult led by her father, she faced unimaginable hardships and abuse. But instead of letting her past define her, she found the courage to break free and reclaim her own identity....

⭐⭐⭐

The beginning intrigued me, the middle rather bored me, and the last third did both.

Interesting story, but not necessarily enough that I would recommend it.

After reading the tagged book, I managed to finish the whole list of #BigJuneReadathon prompts! Although I definitely didn‘t keep up with posting every day, I‘m glad I was able to read one book per prompt. 😄

jenniferw88 Me, on the other hand, who hasn't finished ANY of her books planned 😂! 2y
Clwojick @jenniferw88 glad I went with prompts instead of specific books because I swapped out a lot of the planned books. 😂 Overall still did way better than I normally do. I have a hard time sticking to a set TBR. My inner rebel comes out, and doesn‘t want to be told what to read. 😏 2y
Eggs Hi! I just now realized your photo challenge prompts were meant to match up with one‘s readathon selections!! I was planning on posting my total books read tomorrow evening, okay? Thanks for hosting ❤️ 2y
Clwojick @Eggs the prompts were just there to be used in any way you wanted too! Lots of people used them at photo prompts, but I am SO BAD at sticking to daily posts… so I chose to use them as inspiration for choosing my reading instead. 2y

There are so many weird cults.

I don't get it, how do all these cult leaders get so many followers? What's wrong with people?

Or rather, why is so much wrong with people?

5⭐️ When I think about this book there are no other words I can actually come up with besides ‘horrifically beautiful‘. This book is not just about a cult, but more about the girls faith and how she found peace. However; I do want to emphasize that there are multiple potential triggers within this book that people should consider before starting to read it. With that being said, this book is a five star read for me and I absolutely recommend it.

Crazeedi Wow, the description sounds like a hard story to read 4y
Littlewolf1 @Crazeedi it had its moments but it was a powerful story of finding strength though faith 4y
Crazeedi @Littlewolf1 that's so good and something we need to remember 4y

I found this on Audible Plus and it‘s read by the author. I grabbed it because I‘ve read several books by former members of this cult and I was curious to get a child‘s perspective. I found parts of this very engaging but the writing came across as very juvenile. So it‘s not great, not totally terrible, but has very little to do with the actual cult. She had a terrible childhood and I feel for her. 3⭐️

Categorically terrible. Where's the tea? Spoiler alert, there is none. This is the least culty cult memoir I have ever read. It's a no from me.

Not the most amazing writing, but a truly incredible story. Anna‘s emotion is clearly displayed in every story she tells. Definitely worth the read!

Day 7 of #ReadingResolutions photo challenge was #MemoirMonday (trying to catch up) I came across these two book this year. They are stories on how these two young girls (who are now strong inspirational women) escaped polygamist cults they were born into. I didn‘t even know what a polygamist cult was but once I heard about these ladies and their stories I had to read these books! Very inspiring stories!

JacintaMCarter I'm reading The Sound of Gravel right now! 7y
elisebarker I really enjoyed both of these books!! 7y

I am glad that LeBaron told about her childhood, & it was fascinating to hear about what it was like growing up in a polygamist cult, especially since she left it quite early. She seems like a genuine person, & she overcame a lot. However, & I recognize that I am speaking from my own bias here, I was sad that she moved from one kind of religion to another that I feel is problematic. I‘m glad it brings her peace, & I will try to leave it at that.

Lcsmcat Interesting headline in the Salt Lake Tribune today: “Have You Left a Polygamist Sect? How‘s Your Book Coming?” I guess it‘s become a genre. 7y

This memoir is written by Anna, daughter of infamous cult leader, polygamist, and murderer Ervil LeBaron. Anna bravely escapes the cult at a young age and continues to battles its hold. While interesting, it's written from an emotional distance that makes it clumsy. It's clear Anna is respectfully protecting the privacy of her family, leaving the story feeling incomplete and secretive. I like my memoirs raw. This one had too much restraint.

Samplergal I read all those Mormon books. I agree with you. This one has a reason she doesn‘t tell more. 7y

My Kindle Oasis arrived today with the cover I purchased for it. It‘s great! I love how easy it is to type and find my way around. Also love that I can flip it around depending on which hand doesn‘t feel tired. Love the resolution and already got my Bluetooth headphones set up! Happy with my choice. Getting ready to ship my Voyage back as a trade in which makes this not so expensive an upgrade. 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼

JoScho Oh very cool. I have a voyage and love it but I did spend some time looking at YouTube videos comparing the two. Keep me posted on how it compares please 😊 7y
Redwritinghood Jealous! It sounds like I really should upgrade my Paperwhite soon. 7y
Lissa00 The more I use my oasis the more I love it! I like that cover...I‘ve been thinking of a new cover but I can‘t decide on one:) (edited) 7y

EvieBee @Redwritinghood I really am digging how much easier it is to get around. That did surprise me. But I‘ve never had a Paperwhite. Most people can‘t be parted from it. 🤓 7y
EvieBee @Lissa00 I am so hoping I‘ll opt for my Kindle more often now! Covers are so fun, aren‘t they?! 7y
EvieBee @Puredragonstar Thank you! I think it was a good move too! I was worried I was being a consumerist lol! But no. Pretty sure I‘m going to have this bad boy for a long time. 7y

This book right here was so incredibly interesting. I suggest that you read it! It is the story about Anna Lebaron life growing up in a polygamist colony and how she was able to break free of that when she was just a teenager. This is an incredible story. There is also another book called The Sound of Gravel by Ruth Wariner which is also amazing. Anna and Ruth stories are ones I will never forget!

TheBookStacker I loved The Sound of Gravel so maybe I‘ll check this out 7y
BookaholicNatty Yes if you liked the sound of gravel @TheBookStacker than you will like this too! They found out that they were distant cousins long after they had escaped separately. It‘s a cool story! 7y

It was a very interesting experience to get an inside look of a cult from through the eyes of a child. This wasn't the best written memoir, but Anna LeBaron has quite the story to share, and does so very transparently.

I'm a bit behind on posting! I listened to this on audio and I really liked it. It's crazy how these things happen in this day and age. I love how some of her family helped her escape. Very good listen.

Finished listening to this one this morning. Found it very religious - which isn't really surprising just the tone behind the religion a little bit. I found the story itself important and informative but the writing and actual reading of it poorly done.

#TBRtemptation post 3! Sounds like a mind-numbing memoir! Anna has over 50 siblings through her murderous father, Ervil LeBaron. He killed anyone trying to leave his Mormon cult, & Anna & her siblings were always on the run--they lived in poverty & terror. She escaped when she was 13...but her nightmare was far from over. This is the journey of a lonely & fatherless girl in search of love, faith, & stability. #blameLitsy #blameMrBook 😎
