Stolen Child
Stolen Child | Lisa Carey
From the author of the critically acclaimed The Mermaids Singing comes a haunting, luminous novel set on an enchanted island off the west coast of Ireland where magic, faith, and superstition pervade the inhabitants' lives and tangled relationships--perfect for fans of Eowyn Ivey, Sarah Waters, and Angela Carter.May 1959. From one side of St. Brigid's Island, the mountains of Connemara can be glimpsed on the distant mainland; from the other, the Atlantic stretches as far as the eye can see. This remote settlement, without electricity or even a harbor, has scarcely altered since its namesake saint set up a convent of stone huts centuries ago. Those who live there, including sisters Rose and Emer, are hardy and resourceful, dependent on the sea and each other for survival. Despite the island's natural beauty, it is a place that people move away from, not to--until an outspoken American, also named Brigid, arrives to claim her late uncle's cottage. Brigid has come for more than an inheritance. She's seeking a secret holy well that's rumored to grant miracles. Emer, as scarred and wary as Rose is friendly and beautiful, has good reason to believe in inexplicable powers. Despite her own strange abilities--or perhaps because of them--Emer fears that she won't be able to save her young son, Niall, from a growing threat. Yet Brigid has a gift too, even more remarkable than Emer's. As months pass and Brigid carves out a place on the island and in the sisters' lives, a complicated web of betrayal, fear, and desire culminates in one shocking night that will change the island, and its inhabitants, forever.Steeped in Irish history and lore, The Stolen Child is a mesmerizing descent into old world beliefs, and a captivating exploration of desire, myth, motherhood, and love in all its forms."Steeped in dark Irish mythology, The Stolen Child is a piercing exploration of regret and desire, longing and love. It is a gorgeously written, inventive, and compelling novel."--Ayelet Waldman

I absolutely absolutely absolutely loved this book. It was strange, full of fae and magic and blurred lines and grief. Not for the feint hearted. Desperation and motherhood and loss and deep deep pain. Ireland and the dark side of fairy stories. ✨🖤🙌🏻 so good.

While reading this book, I was mostly confused. I wasn't sure if I was enjoying the book but I was definitely curious about it - enough to keep reading at least. Lots of mystical elements and magic. Ultimately I didn't love this book. I did enjoy The Mermaids Singing by Lisa Carey a great deal. I think it could be very interesting to others, it just wasn't my cup of tea. #bookspin @thearomaofbooks

1. I don't have the opportunity to travel often, but I went to NY to see my Godmother and found out that Isabel Allende was coming to Madison CT while I was there and I was able to take a trip to CT to see her. It was a dream come true! So Isabel Allende. Although I would have loved to see Carlos Ruiz Zafon in Barcelona before he passed away.
2. Absolutely!
3. I love to travel to new places, I would go anywhere.

The Stolen Child is a sweeping story set on a cloistered, Irish island, which has nothing to recommend it save for its quays, its view, and its eponymous holy-well. This is a novel rife with character study that is quintessentially Irish, yet applicable far afield. In themes of motherhood, hope, desperation, and hopelessness, the characters take what little they have and wrestle it into making do. Loved it!

Most grateful is a tough one when one considers all the life-changing books we discussed earlier this week! So I‘ll go with an author I‘m grateful to know personally, @LisaCarey, whose books are nearly as wonderful as the woman herself. Her latest was one of my top picks of 2016 (in fact I believe it made the top 5s of 3 or 4 of us at LibraryThing, and not because of nepotism) 😏 #holidaygratitudechallenge

The setting is a sparsely populated island off of Ireland. The people who reside here, live their lives by the rules of superstition and folklore. The atmosphere is often stormy and foreboding. The lines between myth and reality were blurry. I love this kind of story. It was a good read for me.

This novel sucked me in with its mash of Irish fairytale and 20th-century historical fiction. It centers upon two main characters--one with hands that can heal and one with hands that fill the touched with hopelessness and dread.

This book is exquisite. Beautifully written, excellent character development, and you really feel like part of the island as you read. The touch of magical realism is just enough to lend an air of mystery, and there are so many quotes that I just stopped and read again, setting the book down to think about how *true* they were. Highly recommend for anyone who enjoys Diana Gabaldon, Sarah Waters, Sara Gruen.
