Tigana
Tigana: Anniversary Edition | Guy Gavriel Kay
Tigana is the magical story of a beleaguered land struggling to be free. It is the tale of a people so cursed by the black sorcery of a cruel despotic king that even the name of their once-beautiful homeland cannot be spoken or remembered.

I don't know why, but I wasn't super invested in characters. I liked them and they had touching backstories, but something was missing that would have made me to love them.

This had a nice atmosphere, I loved the world. It felt alive.

This felt a bit slow to read: things happened but there were slower parts too. Or it felt like that when every little detail was explained. I would have been happy with less details & more action.

RaeLovesToRead I really disliked this one for many reasons 8mo
PageShifter @RaeLovesToRead I am so happy that I am not alone with my feelings! 8mo
RaeLovesToRead I'm not sure if this'll work, but if you want to read my thoughts on GR, this is my profile: https://www.goodreads.com/user/show/35995783?ref=nav_profile_l 8mo

RaeLovesToRead Not sure how to send individual reviews! 😄 8mo
PageShifter @RaeLovesToRead You had so many same thoughts!! I didn't like either how men had all those immediately sexual thoughts about women - like there hadn't been so many other things to notice first. And those different POVs, when things were told from totally random characters' POVs. I agree about horses, the man who was taken into the slavery... And how off the pacing was. And oh yes, that how someone's final will was disrespected. 8mo
RaeLovesToRead There was some really dreadful representation too - like the woman who was supposedly only into kinky sex because she was broken and the MC basically had a go at her about it RIGHT AFTER PARTAKING HIMSELF. God, this book made me angry 😅🤣 8mo
PageShifter @RaeLovesToRead 🤣 I was also surprised how many totally random sex scenes there were 😂😂 8mo
RaeLovesToRead Male gazey sex scenes that naffed me the hell off! Hahhaaaa oh my days ?? I don't mind sex scenes but could they be any more "the woman I fancied screwed me in a cupboard so that I wouldn't overhear deets and this isn't problematic at all" 8mo
PageShifter @RaeLovesToRead So true. The way she lost her virginity?!? Awful! 8mo
RaeLovesToRead It's the sort of scene you can't imagine a female author writing/ thinking was a good idea! (Thanks for letting me rant on here... it's cathartic... most of the GR reviews totally love Tigana) 8mo
PageShifter @RaeLovesToRead This really is cathartic!! I read this as a buddy read, others gave this 4 or 5 stars and my reading dragged. I was so alone with my thoughts 🤣🤣🤣 8mo

#ManicMonday time!

Book: Tigana by Guy Gavriel Kay

Author: I‘ve only read one thing by R. Eric Thomas, but it was the funniest damned thing I‘ve EVER read, so I‘ve gotta choose him above all others

Show: Ted Lasso

Band: The Tea Party? I have surprisingly few T artists in my music library unless we get into singers‘ first names or The [Whatever], which I don‘t do with this meme

Song: Take To the Sky - Tori Amos

#FabulousFebruary @Andrew65

I haven't read much, so far. I managed about 10% of Tigana by Guy Gavriel Kay.

Not a reading slump, just a lot going on at the moment.

I don‘t believe in flawless books, and TIGANA is no exception. One character adopts blackface as a disguise, and YMMV on many other elements.

That said, it‘s my favourite fucking book, profanity necessary because I feel too strongly to abstain. TIGANA is vast. It‘s personal. Kay imbues the text with such deep, layered emotion I can hardly stand it. I want to scream about it all day and I want to keep my love just for myself.

7 stars

Butterfinger I appreciate your honesty and enjoy your review. 4y

1. I‘m all set to do some #audiocrafting this afternoon! This ship is kind of a joke gift for my dad. Long story.

2. TIGANA‘s probably my favourite book, but I haven‘t revisited it in almost 10 years. I‘m excited.

3. I uninstalled & reinstalled Libby to try to fix a problem with download speeds. It didn‘t work, but it DID somehow activate the 3x option, which I‘ve never had before despite many updates. Whee!

I. AM. UNDONE.
This was exquisite. So many chilling, brilliant, heart-stopping moments within these 700 pgs. I loved Kay from Lions of Al-Rassan and this had the same heart and soul, but much darker. Also more subplots, but count on Kay to artfully weave everything together. His style is so lyrical and I love how he plays with flashbacks in a very particular way.
The ending, not 100% satisfying, but I think that speaks to the darker quality.

BookmarkTavern That cover is gorgeous and your review has me intrigued! Stacked! 4y

Thanks for the #wondrouswednesday tag, @Eggs !

1. Messed up jerks are kinda my thing, but I THINK Felix Harrowgate from Monette‘s Doctrine of Labyrinths is the worst fictional person I legitimately love. (He is NOT on my sublist of Faves I Never Wanna Punch.)

2. Genre snobbery. Also, excessive use of “had.” CUT OUT YOUR HADS, WRITERS.

3. I‘m really glad I‘ve got signed copies of both TIGANA by Guy Gavriel Kay and BITTERBLUE by Kristin Cashore.

#WyrdAndWonder day 4: rebellions are built on hope

Happy Star Wars day! May the fourth be with you and all that jazz. I‘m going with rebels - Tigana is Guy Gavriel Kay‘s lyrical fantasy of a country so vanquished its conqueror has magically suppressed the very memory of its name. Only those born there can recall it, and once they‘re dead it will be as though it never existed. Can hope and love restore Tigana?

wordslinger42 I've been meaning to read this! 5y
imyril @wordslinger42 I love GGK‘s prose (and that he‘s written a heap of excellent standalone books so you can sink in and enjoy his writing without thinking yikes another ten book series 😉) 5y

Tiny Book Market haul. 😔 The trouble with having an obscure wishlist is, I hardly ever FIND anything off it.

They did have a bunch of Steven Brust and Michelle West this time, but of course it was all stuff I‘ve got. Sigh.

To be honest, I mostly bought these two because the proceeds go to the Children‘s Hospital and I wanted to give them money. I HAVE always wanted this edition of TIGANA, and the WicDiv deluxe hardcover is awfully pretty.

My weekend read is a #fantasy set in an alternative renaissance Italy.

Feeling a bit stressed because we‘re house hunting.

Vinjii @Soubhiville I enjoy house hunting as well, sadly this one isn‘t on our terms. We‘re still maybe 2-3 years away from being able to buy and for now we‘re renting with dogs and our landlord just put the house on the market. Sigh. So a bit stressed! But it‘ll be okay. 6y

#friyayintro time!

1. I couldn't move very much on Tuesday or Wednesday, so I no longer have the most weekly steps of anyone I'm friends with on Fitbit. Grr.
2. We don't have Target here and I don't go to the US, so I'd give it to my mum. She heads down there sometimes and she loves Target.
3. I'm kinda hopeless at keeping track of new releases, but I'm excited to reread TIGANA by Guy Gavriel Kay this summer.
4. California rolls.

#Favevillain #SomethingforSept. Brandin from Tigana. Why? I grew up reading Sci/Fantasy and was used to villains who were black and white. Brandin is definitely the bad guy in this story, he is the conqueror, the tyrant, the murderer. But as you see him through others eyes you realise that he is also a moral man, except when overruled by passion, that he is a man who acted for understandable reasons and is trying to be a good ruler.

Oblomov26 It introduced me to a villain that I could sympathize with, and that we should always remember one man‘s villain is often another mans hero. 8y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag I read this in high school (an interesting book for a junior school library) it'd be interesting to reread it 8y
Keryntalia Ah, Tigana is a favourite of mine - I remember having such complicated feelings about Brandin when I first read it! 8y
iread2much I haven't read this, but it seems like a good one! You might also like poison study, the "evil" leader is a tyrant, but for a reason. 8y

Since I'm reading his latest now, my #TBT pick is Guy Gavriel Kay's Tigana. This was my first Kay book and my first fantasy novel. I fell in love with his writing but not the genre, which is why he's one of the only fantasy authors I read today. I really need to re-read this one, it's been 25 years!
