Lockdown
Lockdown: Escape from Furnace 1 | Alexander Gordon Smith
Furnace Penitentiary: the world's most secure prison for young offenders, buried a mile beneath the earth's surface. Convicted of a murder he didn't commit, sentenced to life without parole, "new fish" Alex Sawyer knows he has two choices: find a way out, or resign himself to a death behind bars, in the darkness at the bottom of the world. Except in Furnace, death is the least of his worries. Soon Alex discovers that the prison is a place of pure evil, where inhuman creatures in gas masks stalk the corridors at night, where giants in black suits drag screaming inmates into the shadows, where deformed beasts can be heard howling from the blood-drenched tunnels below. And behind everything is the mysterious, all-powerful warden, a man as cruel and dangerous as the devil himself, whose unthinkable acts have consequences that stretch far beyond the walls of the prison. Together with a bunch of inmatessome innocent kids who have been framed, others cold-blooded killersAlex plans an escape. But as he starts to uncover the truth about Furnace's deeper, darker purpose, Alex's actions grow ever more dangerous, and he must risk everything to expose this nightmare that's hidden from the eyes of the world.

I really enjoyed this one. Alex after an unsuccessful burglary attempt gets thrown in the prison called the Furnace. A nightmare of a plae complete with mutants and run by psychopaths.

Really enjoyed this one. Was kinda cheesy at times but the story itself grabbed me. I really like some of the character development as well especially for Alex and Donovan. Overall I had fun with this and I put the second one on hold at the library :)

#ForeverNovember day 27: Black Cover
This was an awesome series, but the first one just really grabs you. It was an all-male book but I didn‘t even miss any female interactions 😆

Day 7 person 10

LibrarianRyan @Chrissyreadit - look at this one for your boy. The new covers are a bit more eye catching. A little horror, a little steampunk feel, all kids in trouble. 5y

I inferred that they would get in trouble because they tried to steel from a friend. This help because what they did was unacceptable.

I pick this because I thought it would be cool. It is pretty slow be gets faster. I predict Alex will die.

LibrarianRyan hehehe. This book is sooo good. I love the world the author created. And I think this cover is such a better match than the original. I really need to read the rest of the series. 5y

This is not a cell block I would want to tango in. This series is awesome about a special prison for teens that is more Steampunk/horror than I ever expected based on the hard cover cover. (This is the paperback)

This is a #cellblocktango I should really finish.

So I got an email with ebook bargains of the day and this kind of sounded good to me I mean $2.99 if I hate it, it wasn't a huge waste of money. Has anyone else heard/read this series? Any good?

CoffeeNBooks I had a student last year who absolutely loved that series, and kept telling me I should read it. I never did, because my TBR list is already 4000 books high, lol! I'm curious to hear what you think of it. 6y
ErinGoBragh1011 @CoffeeNBooks I definitely will! I am guessing its YA? 6y

The Furnace is a special teen prison full of #outlaws

#coolbooks @Linsy

Linsy That person in the eye creeped me out! 6y
LibrarianRyan @Linsy I never noticed that until now. But since the original cover had that multiple faces inside each other I can see why they did it. 6y

Series two for #YAWednesday is a mystery/thriller/horror novel. I read the original hardcover and LOVED it. But the paperback cover with the gas mask is so much more appropriate. Also a 5 book series (with two novellas) this book looks life in a teen only special crazy prison.

It's part prison novel, feels like Steampunk/deselpunk, and creepy as all get out. Great for high schoolers. You could go a little younger depending on the student.

TheFunkyBookworm Love that you‘re including the appropriate grade levels in your post! I teach 8th graders so I will keep this one in mind for my more mature readers! Thanks!!! (edited) 6y

This one is hard to rate. It was scary, thrilling, pageturning but I don't feel compelled to continue the series.

Next up for #coverlove #changesedition is Lockdown. I read this book when it was first out and LOVED it. But I didn't think the cover really portrayed what was inside the pages. For me, the new cover did. Thoughts?

ReadingRover I totally agree. The second cover is more related to the book. I liked the story too! 6y
LibrarianRyan @ReadingRover have you finished the series. I always intend to and never do. 6y
ReadingRover @LibrarianRyan Same here. I only read the first one. I‘ve been meaning to get to the second one forever. I only gave the first one 2.5 stars but I remember being really picky about logistics but I totally was into it because of the action. 😝 (edited) 6y

@LibrarianRyan Our well-loved copy... I added a replacement copy on my first book order of the school year!

LibrarianRyan I love that!!! Thank you for sharing. 7y
LibrarianRyan BTW don't know if you can use bookoutlet for school, and you probably get a better discount with your jobber anyway (BT or Ingram I guess) but they are frequently on there. 7y
Johanna414 @LibrarianRyan I use BookOutlet a lot for prizes and different things, but usually try to buy library bound copies for school - especially titles I know will be popular. Many companies will guarantee the bindings forever and that comes in handy when dealing with kids who stuff their books in lockers... obviously this paperback predates my time here. 7y

In this version of London if you are a teen #guilty of a crime you get sent to the furnace. An underground jail for teens that is its own horror show. One of these days I will finish this series as book 1 was awesome. A thriller that verges on horror. Perfect for this time of year. The white is the original hardcover which is amazing but dated. They changed the cover to complete the series. #fallintobooks

Johanna414 This series is always a hit with my high school boys. It's one of my go-to books when I've got reluctant readers 7y
LibrarianRyan @Johanna414 me toooo!! If I would have stayed a children's librarian we would have used it for book club the next year. 👍😋😀🤓 7y

This book is Awesome!!!!! I could not put it down which is weird since I haven't finished the series. It at times reminded me of the Tony Maguire GI Joe movie mixed with horror and teenage prisoners. Great October book. I read it with the white cover, but appreciate the other cover. #septphotochallenge #couldnotputdown
