solid restful sleepy. I like that this included information regarding the availability and results of taking sleep medications. Hopefully this will help further research.

1. I‘m feeling pretty good today.
2. I‘ve had trouble getting to sleep for most of my life, but once I do I can sleep well. Lately it‘s been a bit out of whack.
3. Make the room cool (not cold), dark, and quiet. Play soothing music or a sleep story podcast if needed, but don‘t play with your phone for any other reason. (I need to be better following this advice!)

Fascinating and a surprisingly engaging read. The current state of sleep science is interesting to learn about and the benefits of sleep are so much greater than I would have thought. Honestly everyone should read this book, but especially parents and students. Highly recommend.

Meredith is recommending a book to help you with your overall health through sleep on Book Interrupted‘s Manuscript Monday.

For me personally, there wasn‘t a lot of new information…but I have a background in neuroscience and human memory (and sleep plays a major role in that). Positive: I did learn a few new interesting things about sleep wave patterns of certain conditions like autism, adhd, schizophrenia, etc. Negative: his suggestions for work places or insurance companies encouraging more sleep are very upper middle class white cis male centric.

I learnt a lot here. My biggest take aways will be understanding my own body clock more, understanding how society treats night owls and early birds very differently and why our sleep schedules are different.
However as always with these kind of books there's a undertone of scaremongering.
I read this in conjunction with the podcast Maintenance Phase who did an episode on this book which helped me keep a balanced view on some of the claims made.

The only book you need on science of sleep . Must read for all.

Into Chapter 5 at the moment. Who knew sleep could be so exciting? The author makes it very easy and fun to follow a topic that can be potentially boring or complicated. Not to mention the subtle humor placed here and there.

This was a very deep dive into sleep! The author covers all the ways that sleep impacts our emotional, physical, and mental health, how sleep is important to business, education, finance, medicine, and more! I do think it made me value sleep more, and I will think about it different now and prioritize sleep! If you are interested in health and wellness, or interesting societal topics, this is a good book.

This book was packed with information, with each chapter focusing on a different topic as it relates to the power of sleeping. The book can be read from cover to cover ( which I recommend) or spot read according to the subjects in the individual chapters. Either way, I guarantee you will re-evaluate your sleep habits. 😴

This was a really interesting look into the scientific evidence behind why sleeping, and all of its different stages, are so important. It discusses the benefits of sleep, what each type of sleep achieves, the dangers of reduced/no sleep. It also discusses what can be disrupting a “good” sleep without us knowing.
I like science anyway, but I think it was written so that anyone can follow and see the relevance!
This was my Feb #DoubleSpin

This book is the sleep bible, the science explaining the "what", the "how" and the "why" of sleep.
I've always loved a good night's sleep and knew quality sleep was crucial to health, well-being, work productivity and creativity, and now I am also aware why, as the saying goes: "Sleep is the best medicine."
Amazing book! I like the author banter. Was interesting to read. One of the only informative books I didnt find boring.
Thank you for this masterpiece!!!!

This was fascinating! And now I can tell everyone that I‘m improving my health by always making sure I get 8 hrs sleep ❤️ #doublespin complete for October!

I only read about 10 nonfiction books a year , so I‘m selective about what I pick up. As a person who has stayed up too late reading a good book, I‘m starting to appreciate the value of a good 8 hours of sleep. I plan to read a couple of chapters of Why We Sleep before bed in February. 😴 🛌 💤

I learned so much listening to this. I found the science absolutely fascinating, even if it did leave me seriously worried about my own sleep habits at times. #audiobook via #scribd

This was a fascinating read - really recommend especially for #99ponkindle

On the fourth day of Christmas,...
Probably the best book about the importance of sleep you can read.
Thank you for the recommendation, @Oryx.

It seems fitting that in reviewing this book after finishing it because I couldn‘t sleep. This book is witty and interesting. The narrator is great. The information is shocking in places. Everyone needs to read this book. It‘s shocking all the problems that wouldn‘t exist if we all got (at least) a little bit more sleep. 👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻

NASA has a “nap culture” that is widely known (and joked) about. It‘s what makes those rocket scientists and everyone over at NASA so bloody cleaver. (It only went bad that one time when the crazy astronaut wore a launch diaper to drive from Houston to Florida to kill someone.)

Interesting take on dieting. If you don‘t get enough sleep while dieting, you lose muscle mass instead of fat, but if you‘re hungry while you sleep, you don‘t sleep as well... leading to losing muscle mass as opposed to fat. Interesting how that turns out. Maybe this is the key to why diets/eat less and burn more just doesn‘t work, statistically, especially for women.

If you always loath the necessity of sleep, if you choose to think that sleep is not equally crucial as healthy diet and exercise, if you like to stay up most of the night to play games, watching movies/Kdramas and also reading, I recommend to read this book for you to know more about why we sleep.
This is an essential book to educate people to raise sleep awareness and better sleep practice.

Sleep is the single most effective thing we can do to reset our brain and body health each day.
Lots of interesting stuff to learn here--about how sleep, or lack thereof, affects the body. And how your sleep needs change over time, how sleep aids work, and the differences btw NREM and REM sleep. I did find the language to be a bit florid at times! But I am glad I read it--and I'm certainly sleeping more thanks to it!

Never thought 8 hours of sleep is something so important!
Matthew Walker's book reveals some astounding facts that will startle you.

Staying up late to read a book about sleeping? Also, there are surprisingly a large amount of holds on this book at my library. Back off, patrons!

How was this book? Frightening, but enlightening. I will definitely be trying to improve my sleep patterns.

“Why We Sleep” is a really educational read that I‘d recommend for anyone interested in the subject of sleep. It covers all aspects of the topic without being overwhelming. This was a good 4 star read for me!
My full review is up on my blog now 📚

I am not sure audio was the way to go on this book, the reader's voice made me sleepy ☺ There were interesting parts, but then they tended to get buried in dense, dry passages of studies/statistics/anecdotes that all jumbled together. I may try to check out a print copy and see if it is better.

Humans need more than seven hours of sleep each night to maintain cognitive performance. After ten days of just seven hours of sleep, the brain is as dysfunctional as it would be after going without sleep for twenty-four hours. Three full nights of recovery sleep are insufficient to restore performance back to normal levels after a week of short sleeping. Finally, the human mind cannot accurately sense how sleep-deprived it is when sleep-deprived.
Exciting: Thermostats w/algorithms compare sleep, set optimum temp. Bulb w/filters vary light from warm yellow to strong blue w/sleep tracker to dialdown light in eve & increase in am. Car dashboard w/blue light for am commute
We need more than 7 hrs of sleep/night to maintain cognitive perf. After 10dys of 7 hrs sleep the brain is as dysfunctional as it would be w/o sleep 24hrs
Scary -drowsy driving and mirco sleeping when driving.

3.5/5 ⭐️ Lots of great information about sleep. I didn't realize quite how much sleep did for us and the effect it has on everything else in our lives. I feel like you can jump around in this book though and just read the sections that interest you. I need to improve my sleep now! 😴
