An Old, Cold Grave
An Old, Cold Grave | Iona Whishaw
8 posts | 7 read | 9 to read
The third book in the popular Lane Winslow mystery series by an author the Globe and Mail has called a writer to watch. Its early spring of 1947 in idyllic Kings Cove, and the Hughes ladies, mre et filles, are gardening and sorting through the jars of food that have been put up for the winter. But while cleaning up after the roof of their root cellar has caved in slightly, they are horrified to discover a small skeletal hand embedded in the mess. Panicked, they call Lane Winslow, the ex-British secret service agent, and, not without some misgivings about the state of their tense relationship, Lane calls Inspector Darling. Before long the police crew discover the body of a young child buried almost 40 years before. Who is the child, and why has it not been buried in the local cemetery? Inspector Darling, already busy dealing with a teenage girl who has gone on a destructive rampage at a local mill, asks Lane for help in unearthing the long-forgotten secrets of the early life of the tiny town, and the identity of the long-forgotten child. This delightful new historical mystery series will appeal to fans of Maisie Dobbs and Bess Crawford.

Finished the 3rd book in the series today! #SeriesRead2022

I am really enjoying this series. This one was a cold case mystery, so it wasn‘t as high stakes as the other books have been. I also really enjoyed the progress Darling and Lane‘s relationship have made. Can‘t wait to read the next one.

#DecadesReadingChallenge - 1940s
#NoShameReadathon - cozy mystery
#JoyousJanuary - Book 1 done

WanderingBookaneer This sounds like something @BookishMarginalia might enjoy. 2y

My love for this series continues to grow with this third venture. The bones of a child (dating back 30+ years) are discovered in the Hughes‘ root cellar after the roof collapses and Lane, as their neighbor and friend, calls in Inspector Darling and Ames to investigate the cold case. She assists by probing the memories of her neighbors about residents during that period (1910) before the war. The story is told both in current time and the time 🔻

robinb surrounding the death. Secrets come to light, misunderstandings are made. This story was so very sad in several ways I won‘t go into, but it‘s lightened a bit by Lane‘s and Darling‘s move forward in their relationship. Whishaw does such a wonderful job of conveying time and place, as well as the emotional motivations of her characters, in her writing. Just an overall great effort. 5/5⭐️

Woke up to this lovely, white stuff. Good excuse to stay in my PJs and finish my book. This is book #3 of the Lane Winslow mystery series. Another good book. I love this character and am glad to see her love life pick up a bit.

Jaimelire @Reagan-reads of course I am in Alberta, where else does it snow like this in September! 😉 5y
Reagan @Jaimelire haha no doubt! We have family in Calgary so I have been seeing a lot of snow pictures. Lucky us in Edmonton - we had snow yesterday but just really light, nothing on the ground. (edited) 5y

I really enjoy this series & the characters are very fun. The mystery in this one was pretty weak but I still enjoyed it mainly because of Lane‘s character. Some heavy handed discussion of women‘s rights as well which I could have done without. There is another one in this series which I am looking forward too but am going to take a bit of a break before I dive into it. Anyone else ever need to take a break from a series that they enjoy?

I‘m really loving this series! Great characters, great character interactions, and great mysteries. This one involves a “cold case”. I can‘t wait to read the next one! I voluntarily reviewed a copy provided by the publisher.

5⭐️ A 40 year old skeleton of a child is found buried in a root cellar. The quiet community of King‘s Cove is stunned. Lane calls Inspector Darling to help solve the mystery and put the bones to rest. As the community grapples with the idea a killer is among them, Darling begins to realize how invaluable Lane‘s former intelligence background is.
