The woodland animals were all getting ready for the winter. Geese flew south, rabbits and deer grew thick warm coats, and the raccoons and chipmunks lay down for a long winter nap. Come Christmastime, the wise owls were the first to see the rainbow around the moon. It was a sure sign that the big snow was on its way.

A sweet, beautifully illustrated story about how woodland animals prepare for the coming of Winter, and get by with a little help from their caring human friends. A perfect calming bedtime story for little ones. Thanks for bringing this one to my attention, @TheBookHippie ! #ChildrensClassicReads

#Rushathon #DashingDecember

Read earlier today for #ChildrensClassicRead2023 we had a copy of this beautifully illustrated children‘s book when I was growing up & it was fun to revisit it.

I had a bad headache this afternoon & as I have a day trip to Hilo for work meetings tomorrow that I need to prep gifts for, I took some pain reliever & ended up taking a nap. Hoping to finish wrapping in the next 90 minutes so I can enjoy #HyggeHour ❄️💙❄️

TheBookHippie Oh I hope it passes! This was such a good read for the month! 🩶 12mo

What a lovely little nature book, made me think a little bit about Bambi, making this year of children‘s classics reading a complete circle. So glad it was put on my radar. Thank you @TheBookHippie for a great year of reading and introducing me to books I never would have known about.

TheBookHippie 🙃❄️🤍 it truly did circle nicely. I loved this book too. Such a soothing nature book. 13mo

Didn‘t realize this picture was so dark!

Covid brain is making it hard for me to read the novel I‘m working on so I spent the day watching baking shows and reading these short but lovely books. Covid is apparently making me emotional too because A Christmas Memory and The House Without A Christmas Tree both made me cry.

Eggbeater Big hugs to you! I hope it gets easier soon. 13mo

The Big Snow is a traditional literature book that won the Caldecott Medal for illustrations. It was written and illustrated by Bert and Elmer Hader. It follows the journeys of many woodland animals as they began to realize that winter is approaching and start
planning accordingly. This story would pair with EL strategy #43 that requires students to underline or highlight key words or important facts in written assignments.

This website offers suggestions for incorporating selective highlighting. This could be taught in tangent with a science unit for animal adaptations and utilize UDL 1.3 to offer alternatives to visual processing. A cause and effect chart would be effective. #ucflae3414su19

MeganKlein This book would be awesome for teaching students how to visualize! Many students living in Florida don‘t really know much about snow and the season of winter, and I think this book would be a great way to teach students about those things. I really like your resource and I learned some new information about selective highlighting! 5y
DrSpalding Good for you! Finding a resource regarding how to appropriately highlight information is helpful. I also like the idea of a cause and effect chart. Well done. 5y

This Caldecott award winner explains what happens and what the animals do once winter comes. The Big Snow is an MF due to some of the animals talking. It can be used as a GR or RA. This is a great read especially since we are in Florida because we don‘t experience this as much as those up north. We usually see the animals come to us, not leave us. #UCFLAE3414F17

LaurenR This link provides an exact lesson for the reading of the book. It goes over vocabulary and the importance of reading the story aloud. Quite a few of these words could be considered Tier 3 vocabulary. http://www.edpsycinteractive.org/brilstar/integrative/reading/The%20Big%20Snow.d... 7y
LaurenR ESOL Strategies: #43-have students underline or highlight key words or important facts in written assignments. #23- structure advance organizers consisting for new terminology that learners will encounter in the new lesson vocabulary to be reviewed. 7y
LaurenR UDL Principles: #2.1- clarify vocabulary and symbols. #3.2-highlight patterns, critical features, big ideas, and relationships. 7y
Juliemorell This looks like a cute book! The link you provided would certainly enhance students knowledge on this content as well 7y
DrSpalding Such a great book for a science lesson and I agree it could be used in guided reading or as a read aloud. Anytime you can find a book that can teach content along with the language arts, it's a good one. 7y
