A Literary Christmas
A Literary Christmas: An Anthology | Richard Fairman, The British Library
21 posts | 9 read | 17 to read
From its very origins--as a story in a holy book--Christmas has been celebrated in words. Poets and writers of all sorts, and from all over, have honored the season with their pens, and A Literary Christmas gathers the best of those pieces in a package that anyone would be happy to find beneath their tree on Christmas morning. Within these covers we find Dickens' three spirits keeping company with the jovial Mr. Pickwick, P. G. Wodehouse lamenting Christmas on a diet even as Thomas Tusser counts the cost of a Tudor feast, Jane Austen snowbound in Bath and Kipling importing an English Christmas to India, John Donne turning to the religious side of the holiday and Nancy Mitford talking up tinsel and other trappings of the festive season. Together, the selections show the many sides of Christmas--devotional season, family gathering, and frenzy of buying and giving. Classics alternate with lesser-known works, and surprises abound like plums in a good pudding. Beautifully produced, and radiating warmth for winter's most wonderful season, A Literary Christmas is the perfect book for reading aloud on Christmas Eve, a ready-made family tradition.

📖 What books do you enjoy this time of year? I‘m a moody reader so I like lots of different books, just nothing depressing. Books that are an escape or have a cozy vibe 🎄📚

📖 Do you have a preferred genre? Cozy mysteries, thrillers or holiday horror, seasonal books & romances.📚

📖 Do you have a traditional read? I usually listen to A Christmas Carol or holiday stories while I write cards or wrap gifts 🎄

⬇️

DebinHawaii 📖 What would you recommend? The pictured books tagged for this post & the other one below are good short holiday audiobooks that I enjoy listening to. 📚🎄 (edited) 12mo

I am posting one book per day from my extensive to-be-read collection. No description and providing no reason for wanting to read it, I just do. Some will be old, some will be new. Don‘t judge me - I have a lot of books. Join the fun if you want.

This was a lovely festive anthology that would have been even nicer as a physical book I think - the British Library does such gorgeous compilation books. Festive sections of so many classic books in here and also some really really cool poetry from John Donne to Benjamin Zephaniah. Would make a great gift!

Starting this one on Audible now. Thank god for audiobooks during this busy time of year! 😆🎄

RebL I could not do my job as well without audio books. I‘m grateful for them all year around. 6y
GypsyKat @RebL I‘m grateful for them all year, too. But especially when I have a lot to do around the house. 😊 6y
RebL Yup—mowing the lawn, washing the dishes, special projects—I hear ya! Audiobooks reduce the drudgery. 6y

I think this audiobook was a gift last year from #Audible-or it was an inexpensive daily deal. I've been listening to it while #audiosouping 🍲🥄as most of my current audiobooks didn't fit my mood today. Juliet Stevenson & Simon Callow do a delightful job narrating this seasonal anthology of the holiday 'bits' from different pieces of famous works. Finished Creamy Red Pepper & Tomato Soup (with toppings) will be lunch & posted later. #audiocooking

Lcsmcat That soup looks lovely! We‘re having Tomato and Roasted Red Pepper Soup for the first course tomorrow. Merry Christmas! 7y

My #HolidayReadingGoals are:

❤️️to finish up my Graphic Novel library Loans from November (I think I have 4 left)

🎄 Read 2 Christmas books

❤️Read 10 or more books/GNs

EchoLogical I'm hoping to finish Grit by Angela Duckworth and start Roar by Cora Carmack both on my #TBRbingo card. 7y
Dolly For the first time in awhile there may be no reading because of family visits for Christmas. While that‘s a great reason to not pick up a book, I know the pressure will build into a marathon of reading afterward. 7y
Reagan I want to read Sleeping Beauties, Natchez Burning, Strange Weather, in a Dark Dark Wood, and if I can pick about 7 others then I will hit 100! 7y

JSW I‘m hoping for 7y
LikelyLibrarian Reading The Bear and the Nightingale, and I also need to read Life of Pi for book club. 7y
BeckyandBooks The rest of the Winter Street series (2.5 to go). 7y
TommieMarie74 I‘ve wanted to try graphic novels. It‘s a new Are for me, book-wise, and I‘m not sure where to start. Any recommendations? 7y
Clwojick Definitely! I'll tag you in some that I've read. It depends on what you normally reach for, but one of the first ones that got me really into graphic novels were the classics, redone as graphics. 7y

I actually let out an audible sigh when I opened this lovely little book.

This is an anthology from the British Library of classic poems, stories, and excerpts all centered on the theme of Christmas. I think it will prove to be delightful.
