Something in the Water
Something in the Water: A Novel | Catherine Steadman
A shocking discovery on a honeymoon in paradise changes the lives of a picture-perfect couple in this taut psychological thriller debut--for readers of Ruth Ware, Paula Hawkins, and Shari Lapena. Erin and Mark seem to have it all: he's a successful banker, she's a documentary filmmaker on the brink of a professional breakthrough; they're young and in love, about to embark on their dream honeymoon to Bora Bora. But when, after a blissful day of scuba diving, they discover a mysterious bag filled with incalculable riches, their subsequent choices trigger a sequence of events that will change their lives--and their marriage--forever.

I enjoyed reading this mystery for my local book club, but I don‘t really know why, since I found the main character so irritating! All in all, it was still entertaining!

The story follows a couple, Erin and Mark, who embark on a dream honeymoon but stumble upon a shocking discovery while scuba diving. There was too much left unfinished or explained. This was mediocre at best, the writing was all over the place, at times massive unnecessary detail that should have gone into explaining what happened- I would not recommend.

TieDyeDude Ha! I probably wouldn't have finished this if I didn't listen to the audio. The narrator's performance made up for the weak second half. 1y
S3V3N @TieDyeDude I agree! It picks up towards the end. Before that I struggled with it and I had the audio too. She got into more or something at the end. (edited) 1y

I listened this on Audiobook from Libby. The author narrated it. I found it to be just meh. It didn't really keep my interest until about 80% thru, then it really picked up. I did figure out the ending about 85% into it. It's really slow, but does pickup toward the end.

🙂 Happy Reading 🙃

This book isn‘t about sharks (the main plot isn‘t anyway) but the pic is too crazy to not include 😂 A friend caught this while fishing in New Jersey (& tossed it back in after the picture.)

This book is better than reviews suggest - it was fast paced & popcorny even if the narrator is *painfully* naive. Like…scream at her level naive.

Alfoster That is such a great pic!😝 2y

I enjoyed this thriller, but thought it was a bit long and kinda repetitive. The MC, Erin, makes some really bad choices, but I liked her and rooted for her. It definitely kept my interest though!

3✨I was hoping for something more to be in the water. There is definitely edge of your seat thriller vibes, but I was expecting a different type of story. They only went in the water twice, and I was expecting the thrills to be more related to the water not the aftermath of what they found. Plus the fallout at the end left me pretty down.

Okay so let's start by saying the intro to this book was waaay too long. I almost fell asleep a few times because it was that boring the lengthy. Then the "thrilling" part comes and it was the biggest let down ever. There is nothing thrilling about this book expect the maybe last 10 pages, and even that is subpar. I might have liked the ending more if the rest of the book didn't suck so bad. And it just kept repeating EVERYTHING. 1/5 stars

IuliaC I was disappointed too 3y

So this opens up with a hide-the-body type burial and you know who it is that died. How it happened unfolds slowly. It‘s not a fast paced book but it moved along at a decent pace and the characters went through enough to keep things interesting. Overall, a good read to add to my list of completed books.

I really wanted to like this book but I just couldn't get into it the way I expected. It had a good storyline and the characters were likable. Though in some portions it seemed like the author was trying too hard to make it all work. However, in the end all the loose pieces seem to fit. The ending makes it all worth it.

I would recommend this book for anyone who likes slow mysteries.

While scuba diving, Erin and Mark find something in the water: a bag full of money! Could this give them the life they‘ve dreamed of? But money does not grow from water, so why is this here? Who‘s money is it?

If you lost millions of dollars, wouldn‘t you go searching for it?

It had many favorable reviews, but it just didn‘t work for me. As I struggled through until the end, there was just so much to dislike. The main characters were highly annoying and irritating, unnecessary details and information which detracted from the story, and the ending was lacking in so many ways. The one thing I did like was the authors good description of Bora Bora and its surrounding ocean, you could picture it as paradise.

The build up kept me reading even if suspense isn't my go-to genre. I think my mind would have played tricks on me if I had abandoned rather than finished and having answers. Now I left with "that was it?" The build up didn't match the lackluster ending. Oh well, can't get that time back. On to the next book in my stack.
