This was an interesting commute audiobook. It's not an engrossing page-turner, but the chapters on historically significant fascist rulers filled in the gaps of my knowledge (in high school, my "world history" classes were very Eurocentric & they never got past WW2). She wrote this during the early part of the Trump presidency & it's clear she found a lot of his policies & practices to be dengerous to democracy.

The last 4 chapters redeemed the book. I didn't expect it to be predominantly a retelling of the textbook histories of previous fascist or fascist-leaning world leaders. I expected references and comparisons, but not so much pure historical narrative. The last 1/4 of the book was the discussion I came here for - modern fascism and how we recognize and understand it. Madame Secretary's perspective is invaluable. #bookspin @TheAromaofBooks

Madeline Albright informs the reader on all world leaders who now and in our past, lean to fascism, the working definition of the term, and the hope and need to confront it. Around the world fascist tendencies are rising, as it is here, as it is demonstrated by Trump. She offers remedies, direction to support democratic values. Very insightful read.

As a historian and librarian, I am constantly talking about the importance of knowing past actions and how they shape actions of today and tomorrow.

The tagged book is one I read within the last couple of years that illustrates this well. I was riveted by Albright‘s quick historical lesson on fascism throughout the world, and the consequences nations have faced thanks to leaders‘ actions. Failure to study these could mean repetitious actions.

KVanRead More important than ever!! Thanks for playing 😊 4y

Fascism: A Warning by the former secretary of state, Madeleine Albright is a very clear and concise overview of fascism, starting with a refresher on Hitler and Mussolini and moving on to our present day with an overview of a multitude of countries with leaders who are dictators or have demagogue-like qualities.

A much needed rallying cry for democracy on days when it is sometimes easier to put your head in the sand and hope it all works out!

History has as many interpretations as there are interpreters. I don't subscribe 100 percent to former U.S. Secretary of State Madeleine Albright's interpretations, but I did find value in learning them. She takes readers along on an easy-to-follow chronology of fascist and fascist-leaning leaders (Trump inclusive), all the while, via takeaways from discussions with her students, digs into what fascism is and isn't.

Lcsmcat I loved this as an audiobook read by Albright. 6y

Historical book about famous past and current fascists, what they have in common, and what traits of a fascist Donald Trump exhibits. The eeriest part was the analogy to plucking feathers off a chicken, one at a time--taking steps toward greater consolidation of power so gradually that the people don't realize what's happening until it's too late.

Shawn898 Sounds a lot like what Obama was doing. Seems odd because trump holds the record for the highest amount of deregulation submitted by a president AKA taking power away from the government but hell, in a world uneducated and told how to think by every MSM new source, rich liberal shill, and moronic celebrity out there how could you really blame people for believing such absurd statements as trump is a fascist. Few people think with their own mind. (edited) 6y

4.5🌟 This book is very dense. I could see using this book as a 20th Century history textbook. It has SO much information packed into it. It is far more like a history book than I expected. Had I known that, I would have read it differently (and I did read the second half like a historian). She's definitely done her homework.
👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻

GingerAntics I didn't give it 5 stars because as a book meant for the mainstream I can see a lot of people giving up on this book with how dense it is. It's great information and *should* be knowledge we all learned in school, but it's not. I absolutely enjoyed Madam Secretary Albright's voice in this. You can almost hear her saying all of this (and you literally can if you get the audiobook). #fascism #fascismawarning #madeleinealbright 6y

This is part of why I NEVER vote by party and will never join a political party. I vote based on two things:
1. What a person is willing to fight for (if it's for freedom for everyone or just some)
2. If they can behave as if they passed kindergarten
Number two is an absolute deal breaker for me. I know I will never totally agree with any candidate, but if I agree more than disagree and they can play well with others, they have my vote.

GingerAntics The other reason I will never join a political party is because I'm a historian and I've seen what happens when party affiliation becomes the be all and end all. It's disgusting and I will not join a political party because it's a little too "nazi party" for me. #fascism #fascismawarning #madeleinealbright 6y

Get a college education they said. It will nearly guarantee you a job.
Get a masters degree. It really will guarantee you a good job.
Actually, if you want a secure job with a possibly living wage you're going to need a doctorate.
I have the masters. Guess what I have? A dead end, part time job and more than $155,000 in student debt. The above fact does not surprise me in the least.
#fascism #fascismawarning #madeleinealbright

SassyBookworm Preach! That‘s what I did! Went back to school and got my bachelors and funny thing is my associates degree does me more good so I‘m working in a medical office as a receptionist...funny the hubs has some college no degree and makes more money than me working at The Home Depot 🤔🧐 (nothing wrong with that but I was always taught more education more money...ummm no) 6y
GingerAntics @SassyBookworm people really worship this idea of going to college, but I'm honestly thinking that if what you're passionate about doesn't require it, then go after what you want and forget it. Going to college and it not paying off basically just puts you into debt from the beginning, so it's actually hurting people. I've wanted a PhD since I was 8 or 9 when I first learned what one was, but I'm having to re-evaluate. 6y
GingerAntics @SassyBookworm I totally agree with you. If you do honest work for honest pay, there is zero shame in that. That's awesome. If you enjoy what you do, all the better. Isn't that the goal of every adult, really? 6y
See All 15 Comments
RJHowe We should not so quickly knock higher education and it‘s economics. On average someone with a university degree will make about a million more over their life than without. Even when you add in cost the average degree holder will make hundreds of thousands more. 6y
GingerAntics @RJHowe I'm not knocking it. It has its benefits, but that fact is true for SOME graduates and not others. That needs to be said up front. At this rate, I will NEVER be able to pay off my student loans. I have a masters degree and can't get a full time job doing anything, even answering phones. There aren't jobs in all fields, and that needs to be said up front. 6y
GingerAntics @RJHowe Higher education is not the cure all that it's been made out to be (especially to my generation). 6y
GingerAntics @RJHowe besides, society still needs people to work at Walmart, answer phones and work as mechanics. You can't get those jobs with "too much" education and without those people the grocery story doesn't exist, phones don't get answered, cars don't get repaired and keep running. That is one path, it is not the only path. We need to respect people who cannot access higher education for whatever reason, or choose not to for whatever reason. 6y
SassyBookworm @GingerAntics where I live (rural America) the only jobs that you can really use a degree for here are teaching, nursing, accounting (not counting like doctors and lawyers ect) a lot of technical jobs like welding and cosmetology (now even nursing) people go to our local 2 year tech school. Many of the jobs I have previously applied for wanted not only a degree but experience as well...hard to get experience when I can‘t get a job in my field. 6y
GingerAntics @SassyBookworm I'm having that problem as well. There are no jobs for my degree and everything else either requires experience or I'm told I'm too educated so hiring me would be too big a risk. How are you supposed to get experience? What are these people going to do when all the people WITH experience retire or die? No one will have experience then. (edited) 6y
SassyBookworm @GingerAntics and I honestly LOVE my job now! I work in a small medical office with the best staff I‘ve ever worked with! And (not counting the doctors/NPs) there are 3 of us (that I know of) who all have bachelors degrees and not working in what our degrees are in...architecture, agriculture and communications. I‘m just happy to have a job and love what I do and the people I work with! 6y
GingerAntics @SassyBookworm that's the situation I'm in. I love my job. None of us are working in the field of our degrees, even those of us with advanced degrees. I work with a great group of people. The only thing I would change would be making us full time. Trying to survive on 19.5 hours a week, max, is impossible. (edited) 6y
SassyBookworm @GingerAntics EXACTLY!!! I was unemployed for 8 months and got really lucky to get the job I have! I was told way to many time that I needed more experience or that having a degree I would expect more pay which they weren‘t willing to do. Honestly I didn‘t care about pay I just wanted to get paid! Something is better than nothing! I just hate paying for a degree that has done me no good. Basically an expensive piece of paper that says I‘m smart. 6y
GingerAntics @SassyBookworm YES!!! THAT!!! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻🤟🏻🤟🏻🤟🏻6 figures for two pieces of paper (and a wallet size of the second one) that say I'm smart, I can read, and I can do research. Lovely. Woohoo. 6y
SassyBookworm @GingerAntics that‘s terrible! I hope that you‘ll find something fulltime or you place of work will allow you full time hours soon! 6y
GingerAntics @SassyBookworm apparently it's all to do with retirement. We have met life accounts, but they would have to give us more or do more of something if we were full time, so hardly anyone is full time anymore. Most professors aren't full time, they don't give out tenure to anyone anymore. Only people at the very top of full time. It saves them money that way. 6y
