On the Come Up
On the Come Up | Angie Thomas
This is the highly anticipated second novel by Angie Thomas, the author of the #1 New York Times bestselling, award-winning The Hate U Give.Sixteen-year-old Bri wants to be one of the greatest rappers of all time. Or at least get some streams on her mixtape. As the daughter of an underground rap legend who died right before he hit big, Bri's got massive shoes to fill. But when her mom unexpectedly loses her job, food banks and shut-off notices become as much a part of her life as beats and rhymes. With bills piling up and homelessness staring her family down, Bri no longer just wants to make it--she has to make it.On the Come Up is Angie Thomas's homage to hip hop, the art that sparked her passion for storytelling and continues to inspire her to this day. It is the story of fighting for your dreams, even as the odds are stacked against you; of the struggle to become who you are, and not who everyone expects you to be; and of the desperate realities of poor and working class black families.Brilliant, insightful, full of heart, this novel is another modern classic from one of the most influential literary voices of a generation.

#2 Being in the limelight is stressful and especially when your Bri Jackson, daughter of a rap legend. She is determined to show her passion and surpass her fathers high standards. With the opportunity she Instantly rises to fame only due to highly controversial lyrics. Juggling home life, schoolwork and a mother who‘s recently become unemployed. Bri‘s rep is on the line. If you enjoy teen fiction this one is my suggestion to you.

MissYaremcio Great review Charaya! Remember to include all elements of your assignment, you were missing the pacing! 1w

I wasn‘t sure how I would like this book because of how much I loved The Hate You Give. I definitely didn‘t think it would compare. I was wrong. The stories and characters are so different yet so simIlar in the fact that their stories are not often told. I‘ll definitely read anything Angie Thomas writes. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ First, homage must be paid to the incomparable Bahni Turpin. Hands down my favorite audio narrator! Though I‘ve yet to read THUG, I‘m already impressed with Angie Thomas. Her characters and dialogue are so believable. Such engaging writing. Aspiring rapper Bri comes of age in this often fun, but mostly heavy, socioeconomic look into a working class black neighborhood.

lele1432 I haven't read this yet, but own it both in print and then got the audio jsut because I saw Bahni Turpin was the narrator lol. She's one of my absolute favorites too! 2w

Angie Thomas is such a wonderful author, in that her character development is always on point. This story also touches on social issues such as poverty, mild drug usage, gang violence, & media representation of black & female rappers. I loved listening to the audio version of this book, & think it added a fun element especially around the rap scenes. It was a good read, but THUG still has my heart!

How does Angie Thomas write such compelling characters and stories? This isn't quite as good as THUG because the issues don't feel as immediate and heavy, but it's still a stellar book.

Bri has everything stacked against her - a person of color, recovering drug addict mom, dad killed by gang members, lives in the projects and a hot quick temper. On the plus side, she has an older brother who looks out for her, grandparents, she goes to an arts school, and she's a great rapper. We follow Bri's journey as she's 'on the come up'.

Having a hard time getting the coloration right for a pic of this piece (the background should be a dark black), but after a restorative evening of #audiostitching I just finished this! Loved it! It was interesting reading this right after Evicted, as Bri‘s family struggles with poverty. I felt I was better able to understand that part of her life. Her having to constantly remind her friends about their struggles seemed to ring true as well.

I enjoy how fast @angiethomas novels read because there is so much dialogue and getting right to the heart of the matter. The reader is not bogged down by long descriptions of the setting.

What an amazing ride Ms. Thomas. Excellent characterization. Love Curtis. You really know how to write about young people and their problems -gangs, drug dealing, discrimination of minorities and the impoverished. I just wished you kept the cussing to a minimum, but I know that it is a reality to which I'm not familiar. I loved the acronym GOAT (Greats of All Time). Thanks for making this book.

Angie Thomas has done it again!!
I wasn‘t into reading YA fiction until “The Hate U Give” & this one plopped into my lap.
I will read any story Thomas puts on a page.

Thomas nailed it in “On The Come Up” stylistically. A masterful job in hooking me from page one, spot on character development, and superb use of dialogue throughout.

“On the Come Up” delivers relevant themes & an impassioned message for all ages & walks of life.

This is another stellar book from the writer of The Hate U Give, and another brilliant audio performance from Bahni Turpin.
