The Works of Robert Burns
The Works of Robert Burns: With an Account of His Life, and Criticism on His Writings; To Which Is Prefixed, Some Observations on the Character and Condition of the Scottish Peasantry (Classic Reprint) | Robert Burns

Excerpt from The Works of Robert Burns: With an Account of His Life, and Criticism on His Writings; To Which Is Prefixed, Some Observations on the Character and Condition of the Scottish Peasantry About this time he was solicited, to give his aid to Mr. Thomson's Collection of Scottish Songs. He wrote, with attention and without delay, for this work, all the songs which appear in this volume to which we have added those he contributed to John son's Musical Museum. Burns also found leisure to form a society for pur chasing and circulating books among the farmers of the neighbourhood but these, however praiseworthy employments, still interrupted the attention he ought to have bestowed on his farm, which became so un productive that he found it convenient to resign it, and, disposing of his stock and crop, removed to a small house which he had taken in Dumfries, a short time previous to his lyric engagement with Mr. Thomson. He had now received from the Board of Excise, an appointment to a new district, the emoluments of which amounted to about seventy pounds sterling per annum. Halloween

The mix of Scottish and English make reading very unique. I had to Google some words to make sense of the poem.

#joinin Christmas night supper.... cock-a-leekie soup that‘s been simmering since this morning! In addition to the required boatload of leeks, this edition has carrots, parsnips, celery, turnip, and golden potatoes instead of rice or barley. Bone-in chicken thighs and chopped bacon and prunes on top.

Lynnsoprano That looks fabulous! 3y
Tamra Yum! 3y

Burns Night was SO MUCH FUN, y'all! We read stuff aloud and ate delicious haggis (WHO KNEW?) and sang songs and drank Scotch. At the host's request, I performed a brief history of Burns's life and gave a toast, then got called upon to play the witch in another guest's trippy Scottish fairy tale reenactment. And I got fancy clan tartan cards after the lecture on Scotch.

It was totally worth missing six hours of #24in48, but now I'm back in.

Marina_h Sounds like a great night! I tried haggis when we were in Scotland and was surprised that I actually liked it. But it's really packed full of flavour so I couldn't eat it as a main course. We had it with our fried breakfast 😊 4y
Oryx Scotch 😍 haggis 🤢 (it tastes ok actually, just the thought of what's in it puts me off). Sounds like a really fun night. I forgot it was Burns night. 4y
xicanti @Marina_h tonight we had regular old haggis AND these puffed pastry things filled with the stuff. I ate an embarrassing amount of them. 4y

xicanti @Oryx it was actually on Friday, but the host figured Saturday was a better bet. Given how late things went, I'm sure she was right. 4y

@VioletCavalier and I attended the 2nd annual Robert Burns celebration at a local Michigan brewery; we had haggis, neeps and tatties, cherry cranachan, and Scottish eggs - all yummy Scottish foods!!! Also there were Scottish dancers performing while bagpipes played!

We even wore plaid! 😊

I hit 4:48 for #24in48 while I finished TURNING POINTE by Katherine Locke and sampled Lucy Parker's London Celebrities series. Now I've gotta hunker down with these old, old books I inherited from my grandpa, because I'm expected to share a wee literary tidbit tonight.

Shaneyney I LOVE old books !!! 4y

In Honor of Burns Night - That time my Bestest Book Buddy Becky took me to a Whisky Tasting & Poetry Class.
"And – if freedom an whisky gang thegither –
How do you like your freedom? Swallowed neat?
Distillations of history, language, weather
In an usqueba o barley, burn water, peat." #burnsnight #poetry #whisky
It's a very long poem. Read it here. ?
