Beyond the Highland Mist
Beyond the Highland Mist | Karen Marie Moning
He would sell his warrior soul to possess her. . . . An alluring laird...He was known throughout the kingdom as Hawk, legendary predator of the battlefield and the boudoir. No woman could refuse his touch, but no woman ever stirred his heartuntil a vengeful fairy tumbled Adrienne de Simone out of modern-day Seattle and into medieval Scotland. Captive in a century not her own, entirely too bold, too outspoken, she was an irresistible challenge to the sixteenth-century rogue. Coerced into a marriage with Hawk, Adrienne vowed to keep him at arm's lengthbut his sweet seduction played havoc with her resolve.A prisoner in time...She had a perfect "no" on her perfect lips for the notorious laird, but Hawk swore she would whisper his name with desire, begging for the passion he longed to ignite within her. Not even the barriers of time and space would keep him from winning her love. Despite her uncertainty about following the promptings of her own passionate heart, Adrienne's reservations were no match for Hawk's determination to keep her by his side. . . .

This felt rather old school romance to me given how alpha male the Hawk is, although that's probably also a factor of being a Renaissance Scottish lord. This book has a twist to the traditional historical romance - our heroine gets sent back in time by the fae! While I enjoyed the story, I didn't love it. 3.5💖

Bk 1 of 8: The premise is predicated upon the ego & jealousy of Túath Dé Danann who time travel a woman to see if a 16th century playboy can woo her. The woman has a shady past glossed over near the end of the book, the man is determined to win her. Faery interference occurs and classic rom trope of miscommunications and misunderstandings occur. There‘s no depth to the characters & are we really here for that anyway?

I finished this audiobook on tonight's walk. I forgot how weird this book is. I really did not like the hero Hawk. And it dragged in places too. Honestly if this was my first time reading this book, I'm not sure if I would continue the series. Now I'm super curious how I find the rest of the series.

It took me awhile to get into this but once I did I was in love. The characters were more well rounded than I've seen in some. I expected this to be more like Outlander than it was. It was different in its own way.

@ErinSueG sorry you're sick! I hope you feel better soon! Thanks for doing a fun #sickdaygiveaway despite feeling rough. Of course I've gotta participate just to get to talk about fun vaguely historical smut! 😆 I had a hard time picking between this series and G.A. Aiken's Dragon Kin series, which is one of my favorites, but I don't know if you could classify it as a historical romance. These may be a stretch still, but they're closer than.

Great read! Nice & steamy, bits of drama, hot as hell main man, and a touch of fantasy. Very dangerously close to perfection for this type of book (genre I mean). I'd definitely recommend this book to anyone wanting to heat up their nights 😉

DNF at yes, 4%. I know I didn‘t get really into the book or give it a fair chance, but hear me out. The writing in my opinion is awful. Literally, the word “perfect” was used about 5-7 times in the first 4% of the novel. Then, the word “beautiful” was thrown a round a few times. Also, there are some historical inaccuracies with how the characters speak right away. I know it is just a book and just a romance book, but this book is not for me. #bail

3 out of 5 stars. This book did not do it for me. Super sugary sweet, predictable, and did not give me enough plot/background incentive to truly care about either of the main characters.

It is currently $1.99 on amazon and I didn't mind the Fever Series...so that probably had something to do with why I pounced on this book. I WILL say the banter cracked me up on occasion, so that helped too.

I love this series along with the author's Fever series.

Over the weekend I finished season 2 of Outlander and got a hankering to reread this series. This my 3rd time reading it and it still feels like the first time.

I'm a sucker for time travel romances that happen in Scotland. It's a weakness.

I loved her previous series and this book was good. I've been veering away from the manly man rescuing the dainty lady books so the overly aggressive "manliness" in this book didn't do a lot for me. I love the time traveling aspect. This book was supposed to be by Outlander hangover help, but it fell flat.

Karen Marie Moning - Beyond the Highland Mist ***

I liked it better than I thought I would. But I didn't love it. It was entertaining, I give it that. I liked Adrienne and Sidheach well enough. But seriously. Their story is just textbook example of why every once in a while you should pull up a chair, pour some tea for two and have a decent, honest conversation with each other. No matter what century you're from.

#romantsy #OSRBC

jenafair that is exactly how i felt 8y
HeidiR Not her best but to give KMM credit this was her first. Her books definitely get better. 8y

An enjoyable and interesting mix of genres, I thoroughly enjoyed the story but felt that the mixture was clunky at times. I was both compelled by the story and also felt that this book needed more in the way of world-building to make this a great book. I would definitely read more based on the romance alone. #osrbc #romantsy

Two years ago I began reading romance and i haven't looked back. Beying the Highland Mist was my gateway romance book. Theres a healthy amount of romance mixed in with time travel, rich historical content as well as kilts!! I would give the romance scenes a solid 7 out of 10 :)

Adena Her Fever series is really good, too! 8y
AWorkOfMagic90 Yes it is! I love them in different ways, the fever series in my mind is quite a bit darker! But Dani, Christian, Mac, Barrons, and all the rest I wouldn't trade :) 8y
Adena Yes! Although no matter what, Adam Black is my all time favorite character of hers. 8y

I chose this book because its plot is nearly identical to Outlander and I was looking for a good fix. I didn't quite find it here.
The Hawk was a fine hero– sexy and honorable– but Adrienne's flippant attitude toward him was frustrating and overplayed. I became disinterested in their #romance and more interested in the novel's side characters.
While it had its good moments, I found myself desperately longing for Jamie and Claire Fraser instead.

MrBook Great review! 😊👍🏻 8y

"Hundreds of feet below, nature conspired with the raw, unquenchable mystery of passion in its rhythm; the sensual tempo of the waves as billions of gallons of water came in with a fury, then eased out. Wave after wave of sensation crashed over Adrienne; she was adrift in a sea of such passion that she literally felt herself being reshaped, molded to this man's touch, just as the rocks below her were molded by the ocean's relentless caress." -p170

I would give this about 4 out of 5 stars. It is a great first book. Her writing evolves with each book and her wit shows more and more. Hawk is a great hero and Adam Black is definitely a great antagonist. I recommend if for no other reason than to be introduced to this world. It gets much better!
