Life and Adventures of Santa Claus. by
Life and Adventures of Santa Claus. by: L. Frank Baum (Original Version) | L. Frank Baum
35 posts | 25 read | 10 to read
Once, so long ago our great-grandfathers could scarcely have heard it mentioned, there lived within the great Forest of Burzee a wood-nymph named Necile. She was closely related to the mighty Queen Zurline, and her home was beneath the shade of a widespreading oak. Once every year, on Budding Day, when the trees put forth their new buds, Necile held the Golden Chalice of Ak to the lips of the Queen, who drank therefrom to the prosperity of the Forest. So you see she was a nymph of some importance, and, moreover, it is said she was highly regarded because of her beauty and grace. When she was created she could not have told; Queen Zurline could not have told; the great Ak himself could not have told. It was long ago when the world was new and nymphs were needed to guard the forests and to minister to the wants of the young trees. Then, on some day not remembered, Necile sprang into being; radiant, lovely, straight and slim as the sapling she was created to guard. Her hair was the color that lines a chestnut-bur; her eyes were blue in the sunlight and purple in the shade; her cheeks bloomed with the faint pink that edges the clouds at sunset; her lips were full red, pouting and sweet. For costume she adopted oak-leaf green; all the wood-nymphs dress in that color and know no other so desirable. Her dainty feet were sandal-clad, while her head remained bare of covering other than her silken tresses.

@BookmarkTavern as much as I‘d love to #beyondtheyellowbrickroad I know I won‘t keep up. But I‘d add this for consideration this month.

BookmarkTavern What a cute idea! And feel free to dip in and out, if you‘d like. They‘re all fairly standalone stories. 4w

I found this wonderful story on the Serial Reader app and have really enjoyed it over the last few days. I had no idea this existed! Baum uses his imagination to create an origin story for Santa Claus and toys and Christmas trees, complete with fairies and elves and water nymphs and such. I‘d expect no less from Baum. Very charming, I loved it. 🎅🎄🧸

jitteryjane724 This is a book from my childhood and I've never known anyone else to have read this! How nice that you also enjoyed. Merry Christmas and happy holidays! 2y
Eggs Great choice! 2y
Aims42 I ordered this along with some other Christmas reads for next year (or maybe to read this year during the weird week between Christmas and New Years). This one sounds so fun 🎅🏼🎄😁 Merry Christmas!! 2y

I think I was expecting a very different type of tale, so my dissatisfaction is likely more my fault than the story‘s (especially since everyone seems to love it!)

I believe I will stick to The Night Before Christmas for my Santa fix. 😆

TheAromaofBooks Baum is just... a bit of an odd author to me 😂 2y
mabell @TheAromaofBooks I‘m glad you said that! Because that is sure how I felt! I went back and read reviews, and I‘m thinking I must really have missed the boat on this 🤣 2y
TheAromaofBooks I have only tried an Oz book and that was enough for me to realize that this guy is not for me haha 2y

1. Have I Told You This Already? By Lauren Graham

2. I always look at them, and I love seeing everyone's choices when they share on here, but it's not something I'd buy for myself.

3. I read the tagged book and Little Women every year.

To anyone who hasn't played, I'd love to see your answers.

Eggs The tagged sounds lovely 🥰 Thank you for joining in ❤️❤️ 2y

This was a really enjoyable little read. Loved the character development linked to the legend as the story went along. Worth a couple of hours of anyone‘s time and aged well.

Got my last Christmas book-Life and Adventures of Santa Claus-read last night.
Finished Kaleidoscope yesterday morning.
Both were big hits and I really need to reread Kaleidoscope to get all the nuances and layers.
Both are picks and books I really enjoyed.

marleed I finally read the tagged this year too. I thought it was great fun! 3y

I‘ve had this book in my holiday collection since my children were children, but never read it. It‘s so cute - a secular take on how Santa Claus came to be raised by the nymph, Neville, why, how, and he provides toys to children (needy or not). There‘sa reason he‘s bestowed with ‘Santa‘. And now I know why he was given immortality!

Addison_Reads This edition is beautiful. This is my favorite Christmas book. 💚 3y
marleed @Addison_Reads Oh it is - I love little Christmas books. I smiled so much reading this story - he provided originating explanations for so much we‘ve come to love about this jolly old guy! 3y

This was my first time reading this and wow! I think this might become an annual read! The narration by Tony Hale was also great. He has such a calm and steady voice :)

This is an origin story for Santa Claus. A man whose only wish is to bring joy to children through his creations. The surroundings were descriptive and there was a whole cast of immortal beings that made this story so interesting!

1. Holidays are low key for me. Just food and movies with my husband and nephew. We'll also do a bonfire on winter solstice and on Christmas Eve I'll stay up late reading the tagged book.

2. Stephen King, Grady Hendrix, Neil Gaiman

3. Window of Uncertainty and Peppermint Cookies. 😂 I like it.

Feel free to play if you haven't yet. Thank you @wanderinglynn for tagging me. 💚

Another seasonal reread finished for #BookSpinBingo. @TheAromaofBooks

As a kid I watched the claymation Christmas special of this story and fell in love. It wasn't until college that I discovered it was also a book.

This magical world of wizards, nymphs, nooks, and so many other wonderful creatures is a must-read escape for me during the holidays. This story of how Santa Claus came to be will always be my favorite. 🎅💚

I am not the Nymph Fairy King, but I sure do feel the way he does about taking care of those who are suffering & less fortunate. I hope & pray that 2021 will be a kinder, more gentler year. However, if it isn‘t, that doesn‘t mean I can‘t strive to be more kind & gentle to all those I come in contact with.

Fellow #litsylove pals, I know you feel the same way as you already live this idea of spreading love, hope & help. ❤️

Any goals for 2021?

DrexEdit I'd like to read more of the books that I own, rather than chasing new books from the library all the time. I've been working all year at clearing clutter and books are one element of that for sure! 😊 I've got a little free library right across the street so I can pass the books along as I get through them! That's the plan anyway. 😊 4y
LinesUponAPage @DrexEdit that sounds like a good plan and a very kind plan! Marie Kondo is good at clutter reducing but not when it comes to books!- 30 books? Who wants to only own 30 books? Lol enjoy sharing those books you own. 4y

This wasn't as good as I had hoped for. but it was interesting enough to pass the time. I like L. Frank Baum's world-building, but his plotting and characters are never that strong, in my opinion. That was true for this as well. I still think I would recommend it as a sweet story and a decent Santa origin tale, but don't expect it to blow you away 🤷🏻‍♀️ #wintergames #wintergames2020 #teamreadnosedreindeer @StayCurious #littenlisten #readyourway

It's probably not up to par with The Wizard of Oz as far as fanciful storytelling, but what is here is truly an underrated Christmas tale for kids, full of adventure and an unorthodox portrayal of the jolly one to boot.

"'Yet every man has his mission, which is to leave the world better in some way than he found it. I am of the race of men, and his lot is my lot.'"

Listening to this one for the first time! (I'm not sure why this has a different title on Overdrive, but it's the same book as this, I think.)
