Old Books and New Histories
Old Books and New Histories: An Orientation to Studies in Book and Print Culture | Leslie Howsam
22 posts | 1 read | 2 to read
Studies in the culture and history of the book are a burgeoning academic specialty. Intriguing, rigorous, and vital, they are nevertheless rooted within three major academic disciplines - history, literary studies, and bibliography - that focus respectively upon the book as a cultural transaction, a literary text, and a material artefact. Old Books and New Histories serves as a guide to this rich but sometimes confusing territory, explaining how different scholarly approaches to what may appear to be the same entity can lead to divergent questions and contradictory answers. Rather than introduce the events and turning points in the history of book culture, or debates among its theorists, Leslie Howsam uses an array of books and articles to offer an orientation to the field in terms of disciplinary boundaries and interdisciplinary tensions. Howsam's analysis maps studies of book and print culture onto the disciplinary structure of the North American and European academic world. Old Books and New Histories is also an engaged statement of the historical perspective of the book. In the final analysis, the lesson of studies in book and print culture is that texts change, books are mutable, and readers ultimately make of books what they need.

Today is my ninth wedding anniversary! Shout-out to the old books that served as our dinner centerpieces; may we never have to lug boxes like that around ever again. 😉 #bookishwedding #bookishmarriage

From NPR Books. My chemist daughter claims this is a very simplified explanation and that many different compounds, combined with environmental factors, will affect how an old book smells. I just really like the vanilla smell!

julesG Your chemist daughter is right, though. 😜 5y
Ddzmini This is what I‘m talking about the book store smell is addictive... books anonymous 🤣🤣🤣🙌🏽📖😋 5y

These two books have traveled with me since I was 16. I bought them at an antique store (The books are first or second edition). I‘ve only read them once. And I have a special case for them besides the bags 📖😋🥰🥰🥰

LA1 The books look like something magical will happen when you read them 😧☺️ 5y

Of course this book is so old it‘s not in the database. This is an edition from 1897,back then, before radio and other entertainments , the family might gather round and read a segment or 2.These segments may include moral & uplifting stories, animal facts ,anecdotes etc.My Mom & I were in an antiquarian bookstore, she remembered it was in her Grandparents home & she just had to buy it.Ency. wanderinglynn I ❤️ the old book section. I collect old books. There‘s just something about a book that‘s been around for 50, 75, 100 years... 6y

One of my favourite things about old books is that I love finding the occasional forgotten memory tucked into the pages of the book. May it be a pressed flower, a old receipt, a small hand written note. Recently I bought a book in a second hand store and found a family picture inside. I posted it on a lost and found page on FB. And today I got a msg from someone who recognizes one other people. Hopefully this memory makes it home.

Cool bookworm find in my parent‘s attic. Inscription to my great great grandfather from his father on Christmas 1877.

This was more of a long essay than a book and despite the introduction saying it is for students thinking about getting into this area of study, it is definitely more for already established academics in the various fields. That said it was interesting and the notes and bibliography alone make it worth the time for people interested in the field.

I inherited this collection from my greatgreatgrandmother. My grandmother had loved them as a child as had I and when I bought my house she passed them on to me. Then the LAFlood happened and I lost most of my books, including these. Losing this collection hit me hard. Happy ending though, I found a complete set at a library sale months later. Not the same set my grandmother poured over as a kid but it serves as a nice connection to her still.

DivineDiana How wonderful that you were able to find these! 6y
