But after decades of vicious infighting and partisan gridlock in the New Republic Senate, that hope seems like a distant memory. Now a respected senator, Leia must grapple with the dangers that threaten to cripple the fledgling democracyfrom both within and without. Underworld kingpins, treacherous politicians, and Imperial loyalists are sowing chaos in the galaxy. Desperate to take action, senators are calling for the election of a First Senator. It is their hope that this influential post will bring strong leadership to a divided galaxy. As the daughter of Darth Vader, Leia faces with distrust the prospect of any one person holding such a powerful positioneven when supporters suggest Leia herself for the job. But a new enemy may make this path Leias only option. For at the edges of the galaxy, a mysterious threat is growing...

124/150 Not enough Star Wars novels center on Leia, so I was happy that this one was so enjoyable. At first I was worried it was going to be heavy on politics, but there was plenty of action to keep the story moving at a fast pace. I wish Han had played a bigger part, but this was Leia's story so his part was only supporting. 4 ⭐⭐⭐⭐

I wanted to love this book. I mean how often do you get to read about a badass heroine who‘s in her 40s & it‘s not about kids/marriage/midlife crisis? Sadly I was a bit underwhelmed. I think the biggest problem is it‘s constrained by what happened in episodes IV-VI and what will happen in episode VII. But I still enjoyed a mid-40s badass Leia.

This book takes place about five years before The Force Awakens. Leia is still in the Senate which is starting to completely divide between the Populists and the Centrists. It's not going well and then the Ambassador from Ryloth warns of a new cartel rising. It was a really good book but it does make the event in the Force Awakens seem a bit rushed.

🚀🚀🚀 I was 2 when Star Wars came out. I grew up with it and Princess Leia was one of my first heroes. So reading a book like this is tricky. How do you write a book about a character who has become an icon? I think it's incredibly difficult to do. This wasn't a bad book but it read like fan fiction. Really good fan fiction but it didn't fully hit the mark for me. This is possibly why I've never read Star Wars books until now. That cover though.

Jari-chan I started reading the books after falling in love with the movies, since the books give the characters and the whole universe more depth and deeper thoughts. But as always, there are hood ones and not so good ones. I'm sorry that you've seem to have started with one of the latter 😕 5y
Foxyfictionista @Jari-chan I don't think it's the case that the book isn't good; all I see are great reviews of it. I think it's the case that the original three films live in my head as something perfect and pure and all other Star Wars books and films are just noise to me. I've never been interested in reading any of the books before but I was seduced by the cover. 🤷‍♀️ 5y
Jari-chan @Foxyfictionista If the movies were already perfect to you, then you might really don't need the books 😊 If you enjoy them as they are, that's all that matters. Star Wars is great either way 😊❤️ 5y
Foxyfictionista @Jari-chan Yeah, I that's how I feel. I like that they exist, but they just aren't for me. 😊 5y

I'm pretty good at getting through my stack (although I constantly add to it). I'm not really a mood reader so I usually let my rpg dice app choose for me. I thought it might be fun to let someone else choose my bookish fate for me so here we are.

Excellent contribution to the new canon. I thought Leia‘s characterization was spot on: still optimistic about the New Republic‘s ability to function, but slightly jaded by the events of the original trilogy. Her friendship with an at-first-blush political adversary and its ultimate dissolution was symbolic of the stalemate the two political philosophies in the new galactic senate grappled with. The book also added much needed context to TFA.

I wasn‘t jazzed about starting this book. At first it was Star Wars political machinations and I can barely stand following senate hearings in the real world I don‘t need it in my entertainment. However the author has the presence of mind and skill to make it interesting. Leia has always been a bit of a Mary Sue. Yet in this version she has a deep inner life and has motivations and agency. I would encourage any Star Wars fan to pick it up.

Jerame2999 The Han Solo voice actor is REALLY bad, but luckily this is Leia‘s story and he is barely in it. 6y

It‘s 20yrs after the events in Return Of The Jedi, And now Senator Leia Organa is dealing with opposing factions in the New Republics Galactic Senate. Leia is one of my favourite women in popular culture. She‘s forthright, strong & doesn‘t take crap from anyone. Kinda like the actress who played her so beautifully. #RIPCarrieFisher #PoliticsSuckEvenInTheFuture

My second time reading this book, and it was even better this time around than it was 2 years ago. This time around I did audio, and my dear friends, it was awesome. Almost more like a radio play, with sound effects, voice effects, and even bits of John Williams' score peppered throughout. Far and away my favorite Star Wars book, and possibly my favorite Star Wars content, period. SO GOOD.

I just finished the last 20 mins of Bloodline this morning! This has become one of my favorites from the new canon. It's an oddly timely book that tackles some of the issues we are seeing in the US. On top of that it's nice to see Leia remain a badass, and for Han be portrayed as someone more worthy of any attention. In fact for the first time in a long time I actually liked him. 😂

This was great! Really well written, all of the supporting characters were nicely fleshed out, the conflict made sense and the politics were believable. Entertaining and actually I wish I‘d read it BEFORE seeing the Force Awakens (yeah, yeah, I know it wasn‘t written yet) because the politics in the movie make so much more sense now.

Riveted_Reader_Melissa I really liked this one too, so far my favorite... the politics, old favorite characters, great new ones...and of course great Leia and some Han adventure. 6y

I realized I never made my post for #StarWarsBuddyRead! But I loved this book so much. First I thought it was amazing to do a book about Leia when she‘s not young, we need more badass women in their 40s/50s (not sure how old she is). I also loved all the characters. I‘d read a book solely about each one of them. I think my favorite was Ransolm, the author did an amazing job with him and I felt exactly how Leia did. Five stars for sure!

thearcherisagirl Do you try to read Star Wars novels in any particular order? 6y
InLibrisVeritas @thearcherisagirl At the moment @Riveted_Reader_Melissa and I are working through them, and we have the books picked out till the end of the year. I think we are doing publication order, or close to it 6y
See All 7 Comments
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @thearcherisagirl Yes, we are doing them close to publication order, but with some flexibility for story flow. We are back tracking this month for Lost Stars, then Ahsoka in August. Then it‘s the Rogue one books, but I swapped them around to be in story order, so Catalyst, then forward to Rebel Rising, then back to Rogue One for the fall. (edited) 6y
thearcherisagirl I've been trying to do something close to Canon - timeline order and then expanded universe timeline order. But it takes a spreadsheet to keep up with that. Lol. Maybe publication order would be easier. 6y
InLibrisVeritas @thearcherisagirl I totally understand. I am trying to do that with the EU and I have a notebook with a checklist. 6y
thearcherisagirl I use this website: http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/List_of_books . it lists the novels by whether or not they are Canon and in timeline order. And you can mix it up with the films, cartoons, comic books and other media so you could technically experience everything star Wars media in chronological order. I don't know who keeps the website up but it's amazing 6y

This was my thought for the rest of the year, let me know what you think @InLibrisVeritas we have:
June: Bloodline
July: Lost Stars
August: Ahsoka

Then for fall maybe the unofficial Jyn Erso “Trilogy”?
Sept-Nov: Catalyst, Rebel Rising, Rogue One?

December either From a Certain Point of View or Leia: Princess of Alderaan one is short stories so a little easier to read around the holidays or the other being a fan favorite?

What do you think?

InLibrisVeritas I think that is perfect actually. Especially with December being an easier read. 6y
InLibrisVeritas I think the short stories would be awesome though, since I tend to deal with a lot of mental fatigue around that time. 6y

Riveted_Reader_Melissa Well that‘s two of us who have read Lost Stars: @InLibrisVeritas & @callielafleur and loved it. And three who haven‘t: @DivaDiane @CSeydel and me. So I‘m going to say check your libraries and put it on hold for July, and then we‘ll plan on Ahsoka for August...again, check your library and put it on hold. Please feel free to re-read with us if you are interested or just for the ones that are new to you. 6y
InLibrisVeritas Awesome! It's a fun one to read! 6y
DivaDiane I checked my library and reserved Lost Stars. Hopefully it‘ll come through for July. 6y
CSeydel Sounds good! 6y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @DivaDiane I‘ll keep my fingers crossed! 6y
DivaDiane @Riveted_Reader_Melissa , is there a hashtag or anything to follow the convo for these reads? I tend to miss things when I get busy.... 6y
DivaDiane Duh, just found it. 🤪 6y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @DivaDiane That‘s ok, I do the same thing! Too excited about the book to notice the details in the post. 6y
DivaDiane @Riveted_Reader_Melissa yeah, that‘s what happened! Yeah. 6y
Alicia @Riveted_Reader_Melissa I just read Lost Stars and loved it so am super glad to have a group to discuss with! And I already own Ashoka so am ready for August too!! 😁😁 6y

Just putting this here, for the record. FYI.

DGRachel I saw a Star Wars/Wonder Woman meme that said something along the lines of my childhood princesses grew up to be generals/warriors. I loved that. They gave my generation role models that could be both. I see nothing wrong with being both. 7y
tournevis @DGRachel If the princesses de more than simply be pretty waiting for the prince I'm for that. Heads of state princesses would be great! 7y
JoScho That was what I kept saying during Black Panther-look at all those bad ass women! 7y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @JoScho Yes! And in Black Panther we kept them all, which made it even better than WW for me. 6y
