This book popped up in a YA historical list & was available through my library e-books. A quick but intense read about a Nigerian teen taken by the terrorist group Boko Haram when her village is attacked. Well written, moving (i shed tears at the book & the afterward)) & so important to read to keep those still missing in mind) as it‘s based on interviews with many young women kidnapped by the group. I‘ll be thinking about this one for a while.💚

This is a young adult novel about the real events of Boko Haram‘s abduction of girls and women in Northern Nigeria in 2014. Brutal.

This is so well done. A quick YA novel, told in vignettes. The mc is a bright young teenager, with aspirations of going to university. We learn of her hopes and dreams, family and friendships and daily life. But when Boko Harem attack her village, life changes forever.

Based on interviews with girls who escaped & families of the missing girls, it‘s simply written without ever simplifying extremism or judging the girls‘ reactions. Stunning.

The audio version of this book is fantastic. The chapters are short and cover a wide variety of aspects of the protagonist‘s life before and after capture. Such a tragic story because it‘s based in reality. The afterword is enlightening.

Mailed this today to @arubabookwoman ! Expected to arrive Tuesday.

This was an incredible book. I initially wasn‘t sure about the journal style format of short vignettes, but for the story that was being told, it worked very well and I got into it easily. The language was gorgeous and vivid without overshadowing the characters and the situations. Excellent choice, @lele1432 !

KT1432 Yay I'm so glad you enjoyed it!! Normally the vignette style doesn't work for me, but I thought it worked perfectly for this book! 🤗 6y

Forgot to take a picture before mailing, but it's headed your way @CSeydel to arrive by Apr.1st!

I hadn't kept up with the Boko Haram attacks in Nigeria, but this book made me do some research. The short, vignette style chapters sharpened the narrative focus for me. A "quick" read, although the subject matter is heavy. Left me with lots of questions about human depravity, martyrdom, brainwashing, & survival. 4 stars! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️#lmpbc #groupw #round5

CSeydel Thanks @lele1432 I received it today! And I apologize @arubabookwoman that I haven‘t mailed mine yet - I was sick last week and didn‘t finish reading it. I‘m usually very good about staying on schedule, honest! I plan to mail it this week. 6y

Finally starting my #lmpbc pick! Does anyone else put off books in anticipation of them being super good, or emotional, etc. lol?? It's a bad habit of mine. I'm sleepy so hopefully my eyes don't fail me and I can put a small dent in it! #bookclub #currentread #diversebooks #round5 #GroupW

Shhh...IAmReading Yesss! Perhaps what we really “fear” is knowing that once we begin, the end is that much closer —pop goes the bubble. 😭 6y
KT1432 @Shhh...IAmReading I think that's exactly it lol! I already don't want it to end! 😩 6y

"Not only is this a chronicle that tells a compelling story with authentic details and characterization, it is a testimony to the resilience of those who lived through the harrowing and traumatic experiences while under the control of the Boko Haram." A definite recommend - for both the writing and the audio. Some of the writing that describes the MC‘s early life is quite beautiful. I loved the short first person entries, almost like a diary. One shocking factoid is that Boko Haram used(s) girls as young as 7 as suicide bombers. 😢

I‘d really like to see a sequel told from the perspective of the MC and one of those who “choose” not to return from the forest.

hermyknee Im going to look into the audio right now. 6y
Tamra @hermyknee enjoy feels like the wrong word. It is a meaningful and informative experience! (edited) 6y

This book broke my heart ? it was such a good read and interestingly structured (each "chapter" is structured like a memory or thought)

Knowing that this book is based on true events, you read with a growing sense of dread.

I honestly don't know how I was not a bawling mess.

This book is important. It may be fiction, but it represents horrible things that are really going on in our world.
