I love this book as the message it gives is one that my dad stressed to me as a child. I think that the message treat others how you would like to be treated is so important for all students to hear.

quote
caitylaycock

“You see, Penelope, children are the same as us on the inside, just tastier.”

This book is a lighthearted book about a dinosaur that can't help but eat the classmates. This is a good book for younger students about inclusivity and making new friends. The overall theme of this book is treat others the way you want to be treated, which is an important theme for younger kids.

We Don't Eat Our Classmates was written by Ryan T. Higgins. This book came out in 2018, and is a great book for children who are starting school. It can ease some anxiety children may have, and let them have a good laugh. This book has not won an award, but the author is a known award winning author/illustrator! Great read!

This award-winning (Irma Black Award, E.B. White Read-Aloud Award, SC Picture Book Award, GA Children‘s Book Award) MF picture book brings colorful illustrations and a meaningful lesson to life. Penelope the T-Rex just couldn‘t resist eating her delicious classmates, that is, until one day, when the class goldfish tried to eat Penelope. Drive home the important lesson of treating others how you want to be treated.

TabathaA This text could be presented as an RA or AS, as the talented author and illustrator has several award-winning books under his belt. UDL 9.1 and 9.3 (promote expectations and beliefs that optimize motivation and develop self-assessment and reflection) along with EL 36 (ask numerous questions which require higher-level thinking responses) to involve the students by identifying what they may have done differently to handle their urges. 3y

acassatta This book seems like a great addition to my must-have list! I love the message behind it of treating others how you would like to be treated. That is especially important to implement into little ones minds as they move further in their education and life in general:) 3y

Sdemps This story teaches a great message to students. I love the illustration and I bet this would be a great book to share with students. 3y
AlexRobinson I‘ve never heard of this book and what a CUTE STORY!! A beautiful message behind it and although this could be seen as a primary K-2 grade, I‘m sure it could be used up to 5th! 3y
Vanvlieta Omg, adding this book to my “TBR” stack... it looks so good😍! I like that you chose EL strategy 36 (ask questions that require higher level thinking) this is a great way to understand our students comprehension while reading the book. Asking questions while reading the story can promote understanding and introduce new ideas(: 3y

This F story is about a dinosaur named Penelope who goes to school for the first time. She finds out her classmates are children and she immediately starts eating them. Penelope learns at the end that in order to make friends she has to treat them the way she would like to get treated. Students can read this with their teacher and see different point of views of the text.

LizzettM The UDL Principle (9.3) will allow students to reflect on the story and see what they believe. EL strategy 20, listing the most important words and phrases on the bard to remind the students to keep a look out on those words. This book won the Mitten Award Honor.

This is such a great RF book to bring in an Elementary classroom and use as a RA. It is a cute take on don't do to other what you wouldn't want done to yourself. Poor Penelope the dinosaur wants to fit in, but keeps trying to eat the other students. Thanks to the help of the class goldfish she learns her lesson of why you shouldn't eat your classmates. More on the author at https://www.rodeenliterary.com/ryan-t-higgins.

KatiaP The ESOL strategy I would use is 14 simplify my speech by making it slower and redundant. The UDL strategy I would use is 6.1 guide the appropriate goal-setting by talking with the class qnd write down what they wouldn't want someone to do to them and what they may do that upsets someone else. Then at the end we can come up with ways on how to fix them. #UCFLAE3414SP20 4y
ShardaeP This sound like an interesting book. It also sounds relatable. There is a time in everybody's lives that they feel like they do not fit in, but they want to. I curious to know how the goldfish helped the dinosaur, so I will put this on my “to read“ list. 4y
DrSpalding You could of course use the author study that you have now experienced. Reading aloud Higgins books is probably the best way to share them. These picture books are meant to be shared with students! 4y

I‘ve started my annual outreach program to the local elementary school with this comic gem. Penelope Rex starts school only to find out her class is full of children— delicious, delicious children. Great for conversations about being a good friend and/or classmate, as well as the golden rule in general. 🦖

Erinreadsthebooks Such a great book 🤗 5y
Come-read-with-me @emtobiasz I love this book! Have you read @Edwina: The Dinosaur Who Didn‘t Know She was Extinct” It‘s right up there with the tagged book. 5y
emtobiasz @Come-read-with-me Yes! That one‘s great too, although I think that works better with a slightly older sense of humor (say, second grade). This one is a lot more versatile, although still funny for kids who think they‘re too old for picture books. 5y
Come-read-with-me @emtobiasz You‘re right - although I read it to my 4 & 6 yo nieces and they loved it. 5y
mandarchy I loved reading this to my students. We talked about how Penelope wondered how many teeth her classmates will have. Maybe that's how predators think? The one with the most teeth eats! 4y

We Don‘t Eat Our Classmates by Ryan T. Higgins would be a great fictional picture book to use at the beginning of the school year. It‘s about a young T.Rex starting school for the first time and cannot stop eating her fellow classmates! This story would be a great resource for a RA as the children would laugh and giggle throughout the entire story! A great activity for this book can be found at

The ESOL strategy that would work great with this story is using a variety of comprehension activities such as role playing activities and KWL activities. Using a T Chart is also a great way to discuss what are expected behaviors and what are inappropriate behaviors. We can also use the UDL strategy of guiding appropriate goal-setting to express to the children th

I HAVE TO BUY A COPY OF THIS BOOK FOR MYSELF!. It is even better than “I Would Really Like to Eat a Child”I. A perfect book to have kids laughing out loud. I will read it as many times as they ask for as long as I don‘t have to make 300 tuna fish sandwiches.

Omg this book was hilarious and a huge hit at our house!!! My 10yo son and I literally took turns reading it back to back 4 times bc it was gold!! Now to go search other books by this author per kiddos request! Thanks @Krisjericho for posting this the other day!!

Elizabeth2 I loved finding books like that with my kids. With my youngest, it was the discovery of Elephant & Piggie. We laughed ourselves silly when reading those books. I discovered them just a bit too late though, as he out grew them so quickly that we didn‘t get to enjoy all of the different Elephant & Piggie books. I‘m holding onto the ones we have, because if I‘m lucky enough to have grandchildren I‘ll get to read them again. ❤️😊 Tagged is our fav! 5y

Penelope is a T. rex. When she goes to school for the first time she finds her classmates are human, so she eats them. But you‘re not supposed to, so she spits them back out. Now Penelope is having trouble making friends. Through the story she gains empathy and rebuilds trust.

This book is so much fun that I‘ve read it to my 2nd and 4th grader multiple times. It would be best for kindergarten, but the humor is so good older kids will go for it.

I am SO far behind on posting reviews or even just random blurbs about what I‘ve been reading. I compose Litsy posts in my head then don‘t have the energy to post them (does this happen to anyone else?)

Anyway, here are some of our favorite picture books from the summer. We took a huge haul back to the library last week. I was hoping to clear off my card but we ended up getting almost as many back out. 🤦🏻‍♀️

P.S. I ❤️ Ryan T. Higgins.

We Don't Eat Our Classmates is a wonderful book filled with funny little moments. Penelope Rex must deal with the aftermath of temporarily eating her classmates on the first day at her new school. When she tells her dad she had a bad day, he immediately knows she ate the kids. Which makes me wonder: why didn't he warn her that her classmates were children and instruct her not to eat them???
