In this moving new novel from celebrated author Nickolas Butler, a Wisconsin family grapples with the power and limitations of faith when one of their own falls under the influence of a radical church Lyle Hovde is at the onset of his golden years, living a mostly content life in rural Wisconsin with his wife, Peg, daughter, Shiloh, and six-year old grandson, Isaac. After a troubled adolescence and subsequent estrangement from her parents, Shiloh has finally come home. But while Lyle is thrilled to have his whole family reunited, hes also uneasy: in Shilohs absence, she has become deeply involved with an extremist church, and the devout pastor courting her is convinced Isaac has the spiritual ability to heal the sick. While reckoning with his own faithor lack thereofLyle soon finds himself torn between his unease about the church and his desire to keep his daughter and grandson in his life. But when the churchs radical belief system threatens Isaacs safety, Lyle is forced to make a decision from which the family may not recover. Set over the course of one year and beautifully evoking the change of seasons, Little Faith is a powerful and deeply affecting intergenerational novel about family and community, the ways in which belief is both formed and shaken, and the lengths we go to protect our own.

Nickolas Butler is such a special author. I am a 100%, true blue city girl (like even the suburbs make me twitchy after a while) but he writes so beautifully about the Midwest that I find myself completely captivated by the story AND the setting. He is a master at writing truly lovely depictions of regular folks leading regular lives - novels for grownups, if you will. Loved it. 4⭐️.

Tamra I‘ve never read anything by Butler, stacked! 1w

saresmoore I sold out and moved to the ‘burbs and while I can‘t pinpoint them as the source of my perpetual twitching, I will say they‘re great fodder for dystopian story ideas. 😆 I miss the anonymity of the city, but some days, I long for the solitude of rural living. All that rambling to say, Suburbia is Limbo and I want to read this book! 1w
MicheleinPhilly @saresmoore The ironic thing is that we‘re total homebodies. We really SHOULD live in the middle of nowhere for as much introverting as we do. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 1w
cathysaid Sounds a bit like Kent Haruf...who I love. 1w
cathipink I'll be looking for his books - thanks for this review! 1w
MicheleinPhilly @cathysaid Kent Haruf is an author I‘ve always meant to read but haven‘t yet. Will rectify that. 1w

#BookReport for last week 1)Next Year in Havana was a well done audio book. Slow in a few spots but a good story and taught me so much about Cuban history. 3 1/2 🌟 2)Little Faith was so good. A story about a family and how loss can shake our faith. 4 🌟 3) Moloka‘i. I loved this book about the Leper colony on this Hawaiian island. 4 🌟 The books pictured are this week‘s #WeeklyForecast

@Cinfhen Shotgun Lovesongs in now on my tbr. 😀

Cinfhen I loved shotgun lovesongs 🎶💕👍🏽 Hope you love it too!! I suggested it to @BarbaraBB but she was only meh over it 😔 3w
Cinfhen Are you doing the #LilliRead?? Im not sure how I feel about this book?? It‘s a little uneven for me 3w
Kdgordon88 @Cinfhen I haven‘t started yet. I will as soon as I get off Litsy. 😁 I will let you know when I‘ve got the first section read. (edited) 3w

BarbaraBB @Cinfhen No, not meh, I did like it, but my expectations were too high I think! I hope you will enjoy it, @Kdgordon88 ! (edited) 3w
Kdgordon88 @cinfhen #LilliRead. I have finished our first section and it is just meh so far. It is a flat narrative not evoking much emotion, but that could just be me. I will probably continue on at least through our next section. (edited) 2w
Cinfhen I haven‘t started the new section of #LilliRead but I hope to later today. If it doesn‘t grab me I may put it aside. I‘ve got my eyes on other books!!!!! #BookNerdProblems 2w

The best book of the year IMO. The writing is high quality. The story is interesting. Bonus is that it takes place in Wisconsin. (I‘m a former Wisconsinite and most of my family is still there.)

LiteraryinLititz I have never heard of this author but your description and the other Litsy reviews make me want to give it a try! 3mo
BookNAround I haven‘t read this one yet but I loved his debut Shotgun Lovesongs and liked The Hearts of Men well enough so it‘s good to hear this one is a good read. 3mo

Audiobooks are life savers during readathons and I was happy to have this one to listen to when I needed to be on the move. Litsy introduced me Nickolas Butler for which I am grateful This was the third book of his that I have read and I have not been disappointed yet. Faith, family, and friendship are all woven into this novel with sharply drawn characters. It took me a bit to get into it but I am glad I chose to listen to the audiobook. #24in48

Loved this one. The nature descriptions and lovable main character made for a winning combination for me. Faith, religion, familial relationships, and simple pleasures in life take center stage. I took this picture with one of my apple trees to represent Lyle's beloved Sourdough Orchard. 🌳 🍏 the #audiobook was excellent!! I recommend that format for a whole other dimension to the MC.

MicheleinPhilly I can‘t wait to read this one. He is consistently amazing. 4mo

Chelsea.Poole @jas16 at first I was put off by the narrator's deep voice but once I got used to the character I began enjoying it because it fits perfectly! Hope you enjoy 😊 5mo

Chelsea.Poole @BarbaraBB I really enjoyed Lovesongs, that's why I snatched this one up! 5mo
Chelsea.Poole @erzascarletbookgasm so far this is very different in subject matter, but still the same feeling I had when reading Lovesongs, if that makes sense! This one is all about faith and family relationships so far. 😊 5mo
peaknit I liked the Hearts of Men, it was quintessential Midwest and the main characters were very likable. 5mo

I found this to be a moving family story and a quite believable portrayal of how some people might struggle with the roles of faith and organized religion in their lives. Sometimes the journey is deep and philosophical, other times urgent, emotional, and/or practical - and I think this book conveyed that really well. As he has in everything of his that I‘ve read, Nickolas Butler nailed his descriptions of Wisconsin‘s culture and natural setting.

Suet624 Your review and the beautiful cover of the book have me hooked. 7mo

This story “Little Faith” is about just that- Faith. It‘s about how our faith can ebb and flow, become great or sink to the depths. This story took me on an emotional roller coaster right along with the main character, Lyle. The ending will leave one pondering.
