In this moving new novel from celebrated author Nickolas Butler, a Wisconsin family grapples with the power and limitations of faith when one of their own falls under the influence of a radical church Lyle Hovde is at the onset of his golden years, living a mostly content life in rural Wisconsin with his wife, Peg, daughter, Shiloh, and six-year old grandson, Isaac. After a troubled adolescence and subsequent estrangement from her parents, Shiloh has finally come home. But while Lyle is thrilled to have his whole family reunited, hes also uneasy: in Shilohs absence, she has become deeply involved with an extremist church, and the devout pastor courting her is convinced Isaac has the spiritual ability to heal the sick. While reckoning with his own faithor lack thereofLyle soon finds himself torn between his unease about the church and his desire to keep his daughter and grandson in his life. But when the churchs radical belief system threatens Isaacs safety, Lyle is forced to make a decision from which the family may not recover. Set over the course of one year and beautifully evoking the change of seasons, Little Faith is a powerful and deeply affecting intergenerational novel about family and community, the ways in which belief is both formed and shaken, and the lengths we go to protect our own.

peaKnit Nice job on the book spin! That was a great night with the author when we went to lake Mills. I still kick myself for not having him sign my Shotgun Lovesongs when we saw him at the WI Book Fair... 4y

So I found out our library was closing 15 minutes before it did. I panic grabbed 9 books (even though I have a closet full that I haven't read yet!!!) 2 cook books, 7 other books. Has anyone read any of them? A few I've heard of, most were a quick skim or cover art grab. Tell me I'm not crazy??

Chrys I got to my library just after it closed with no warning, I sat in the parking lot on stun for minute. The notification email came a couple of hours later. 4y
AprilMae @Chrys I'm so sorry!! To be completely honest, I wasn't planning on stopping. But I saw it was open and thought, oh I should look at their cook books. Then I read the sign by the door.... I panicked. I don't remember our library closing for more than 1 day. 4y
Chrys I am looking at it as an opportunity to read down my tbr stack at home, or trying to. 4y
Deblovestoread I've read the top two and loved both. 4y

I love how Nickolas Butler writes. His books have so much warmth. This one would make a great book club pick, if I was still in a book club.

Nickolas Butler is such a special author. I am a 100%, true blue city girl (like even the suburbs make me twitchy after a while) but he writes so beautifully about the Midwest that I find myself completely captivated by the story AND the setting. He is a master at writing truly lovely depictions of regular folks leading regular lives - novels for grownups, if you will. Loved it. 4⭐️.

Tamra I‘ve never read anything by Butler, stacked! 4y
LeahBergen The burbs make me twitchy, too 😆 4y

Crazeedi Not heard of him, but he sounds good! I'm checking this out! Thanks!! Btw, city's make me twitchy, lol. I guess its city mouse, country mouse!😉❤ 4y

JenReadsAlot I've met him a couple of times (Wisconsin girl here) and he is so great! 4y
saresmoore I sold out and moved to the ‘burbs and while I can‘t pinpoint them as the source of my perpetual twitching, I will say they‘re great fodder for dystopian story ideas. 😆 I miss the anonymity of the city, but some days, I long for the solitude of rural living. All that rambling to say, Suburbia is Limbo and I want to read this book! 4y
MicheleinPhilly @saresmoore The ironic thing is that we‘re total homebodies. We really SHOULD live in the middle of nowhere for as much introverting as we do. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 4y
cathysaid Sounds a bit like Kent Haruf...who I love. 4y

#BookReport for last week 1)Next Year in Havana was a well done audio book. Slow in a few spots but a good story and taught me so much about Cuban history. 3 1/2 🌟 2)Little Faith was so good. A story about a family and how loss can shake our faith. 4 🌟 3) Moloka‘i. I loved this book about the Leper colony on this Hawaiian island. 4 🌟 The books pictured are this week‘s #WeeklyForecast

@Cinfhen Shotgun Lovesongs in now on my tbr. 😀

Cinfhen I loved shotgun lovesongs 🎶💕👍🏽 Hope you love it too!! I suggested it to @BarbaraBB but she was only meh over it 😔 4y
Cinfhen Are you doing the #LilliRead?? Im not sure how I feel about this book?? It‘s a little uneven for me 4y

Deblovestoread @cinfhen #LilliRead. I have finished our first section and it is just meh so far. It is a flat narrative not evoking much emotion, but that could just be me. I will probably continue on at least through our next section. (edited) 4y

The best book of the year IMO. The writing is high quality. The story is interesting. Bonus is that it takes place in Wisconsin. (I‘m a former Wisconsinite and most of my family is still there.)

LiteraryinLawrence I have never heard of this author but your description and the other Litsy reviews make me want to give it a try! 5y
BookNAround I haven‘t read this one yet but I loved his debut Shotgun Lovesongs and liked The Hearts of Men well enough so it‘s good to hear this one is a good read. 5y

Audiobooks are life savers during readathons and I was happy to have this one to listen to when I needed to be on the move. Litsy introduced me Nickolas Butler for which I am grateful This was the third book of his that I have read and I have not been disappointed yet. Faith, family, and friendship are all woven into this novel with sharply drawn characters. It took me a bit to get into it but I am glad I chose to listen to the audiobook. #24in48

Loved this one. The nature descriptions and lovable main character made for a winning combination for me. Faith, religion, familial relationships, and simple pleasures in life take center stage. I took this picture with one of my apple trees to represent Lyle's beloved Sourdough Orchard. 🌳 🍏 the #audiobook was excellent!! I recommend that format for a whole other dimension to the MC.

MicheleinPhilly I can‘t wait to read this one. He is consistently amazing. 5y

erzascarletbookgasm I liked Shotgun Lovesongs. Look forward to your thoughts on this 5y
Chelsea.Poole @jas16 at first I was put off by the narrator's deep voice but once I got used to the character I began enjoying it because it fits perfectly! Hope you enjoy 😊 5y
Chelsea.Poole @peaknit this is only my second novel by him but I'm interested in reading his others! Thanks 😊 5y
Chelsea.Poole @BarbaraBB I really enjoyed Lovesongs, that's why I snatched this one up! 5y
Chelsea.Poole @erzascarletbookgasm so far this is very different in subject matter, but still the same feeling I had when reading Lovesongs, if that makes sense! This one is all about faith and family relationships so far. 😊 5y
peaKnit I liked the Hearts of Men, it was quintessential Midwest and the main characters were very likable. 5y

I found this to be a moving family story and a quite believable portrayal of how some people might struggle with the roles of faith and organized religion in their lives. Sometimes the journey is deep and philosophical, other times urgent, emotional, and/or practical - and I think this book conveyed that really well. As he has in everything of his that I‘ve read, Nickolas Butler nailed his descriptions of Wisconsin‘s culture and natural setting.

Suet624 Your review and the beautiful cover of the book have me hooked. 5y

This story “Little Faith” is about just that- Faith. It‘s about how our faith can ebb and flow, become great or sink to the depths. This story took me on an emotional roller coaster right along with the main character, Lyle. The ending will leave one pondering.
