A love story of a group of small farm town kids, mostly centered around Lee, Hank & Beth. Depicts the change that occurs between those who leave town, those who come back & those who stay. Yet, true friendship still cares even in the ups & downs of relationships.

This character driven novel about five friends who have known each other since childhood really tugged at my heart strings and made me want to call up an old friend. ❤️

I really love this book! I think anyone from the Midwest will find this book so familiar. The characters and setting were like a homecoming. I just recognized people I know and the town itself was like my hometown. I love my midwestern roots, and I really appreciated the author paying tribute to this area. Some of the phrasing was quite beautiful too. I love it when an author can put words together in a way that makes me feel emotions.

I loved this book. I loved the characters. This hit me at the perfect time and on so many levels. Having lived in a small town and moving to the city. I was craving a character driven novel and this delivered. I had to force myself to put the book down at times, so I wouldn't finish the book to quickly. I'm going to miss Lee, Henry, and Beth the most.

Really enjoying this character driven novel about 4 friends from a small rural town. You know when you read the first chapter and you get goosebumps ... I think this ones going to be good.

Life in rural #Wisconsin as lived by four friends who grew up together. They went through a lot, maybe they aren‘t even friends anymore, but there is so much that binds them.
The story is well written with good character building, however I think it‘ll turn out to be one of those books I‘ll soon forget all about.

This book was set in rural Wisconsin outside of Eau Claire, where I have lived for the last five years. He captured what it feels like to live here perfectly. I loved this novel that‘s as much about the power and messiness of friendship as it is a love letter to the author‘s home state and hometown. Pic of my backyard right now. We have been dumped with ~4 feet of snow in the 3 weeks! I thought it was a fitting photo to accompany this review…

Honestly, I‘m not sure how I feel about this novel. I wasn‘t riveted but I didn‘t dislike it. I thought it gave an excellent picture of life in rural Wisconsin. From that aspect, it felt like a warm hug. We know these people, we‘ve lived in or around this town, some of us never left. It was a compelling look at life and I wonder how those who haven‘t lived this experience find the book.

This was a surprisingly solid read. Not something I would normally pick up but a friend recommended it off the clearance rack. It was 2 bucks so what the hey. And I'm glad I agreed! A little slow to start but picks up pace with an emotional ending. Four grown mens' stories of their lives as adults weaving in and out of their hometown in the rural Midwest and their friendships with each other. The writing was solid and I teared up some. Recommend👍

The story of four friends who are bound by their upbringing in the same small town, and struggle to make sense of their future. Butler's writing is quiet, lyrical and tender. I adore this.

Watching the latest episode of one of my favorite PBS shows, Around the Farm Table, and Nickolas Butler showed up! This episode is about Inga‘s book club lunch and they read this book. How cool that Mr Butler will actually be there! #pbsnerd

Really loved this book about childhood friends maintaining those bonds in adulthood despite different paths. This a quiet book about decent people who still have strong ties to their hometown even though most of them leave repeatedly. The way Butler writes about Wisconsin is incredible. So glad I picked this up.

Yes!! My Book Outlet Boxing Day order finally arrived. It is my first order with them and I couldn‘t resist. I got 21 books for under $40. Most of these are #blameitonlistsy titles. So ready for the readathon now.

Solid read about friendship among a group of adult men who grew up together on a small Wisconsin town. They see each other through triumph and tragedy as they are both taken away from, and drawn back to, their community of origin.

I loved loved loved this book. The story is very touching and the characters feel real and relatable. It's a lovely reflection on what home means and what implies to grow up and change. I might have read it being a bit too young (I was 16) but still it deeply moved me and I know I'll come back to it. 5🌟

Five friends grow up in a small midwestern town. Some leave and lead separate lives but eventually return to their hometown. This is funny and touching.

On a college tour of UW Madison with my daughter. Post formal tour, she's exploring more of the campus. I'm passing the time on this beautiful day sitting outside the Student Union, reading a book set in Wisconsin by a Wisconsin author, and drinking what many would argue is Wisconsin's favorite beverage. After some time with my #bookandbeer, I'm going to check out the University Bookstore. Of course.

It's about 4 childhood friends, one is now a rodeo star, another a farmer who married his HS sweetheart, then there's the guy who turned "city slicker" & lastly Lee, a bonafide musician with all the trappings of fame, success & money. This book is salt & earth goodness - a MUST READ ~ don't need to like cowboys?

This is a story about home & friendships. A story of 4 men who grew up together in a small town & went on their separate ways in life. All of them are lonely in some ways but they know they can always rely on each other. You'll find the characters grow on you, be engaged in the tale of friendships lost & found, of love & betrayal, of forgiveness & growing up. Quite a wonderful & touching story against the Midwestern heartland backdrop.Adore this.

A quiet story written from the perspectives of five childhood friends as they explore the very real world of complex adult relationships. Great scene setting and simple but well written prose, this had me engaged from the outset and I am a huge fan of multiple narrators. I began reading the paperback but was so hooked I had to download the audio so I could listen while I did other things.

When you get to a cliffhanger but you have to stop listening because you can't find your headphones 😣 hate that!! On the plus side - loving in this book

Loving this so far. The relationships are interesting and written really well. I'd never heard of Nickolas Butler before this but now I'd like to read his other two novels 😊.

I love my life.

I flew through this on audio and ADORED it. Will be at the front of the line to read his next one (Thanks, @Penny_LiteraryHoarders !) and am now craving/would love recommendations for more Upper Midwest fiction.
