Addie Greyborne loved working with rare books at the Boston Public Library--she even got to play detective, tracking down clues about mysterious old volumes. But she didn't expect her sleuthing skills to come in so handy in a little seaside town . . . Addie left some painful memories behind in the big city, including the unsolved murder of her fianc? and her father's fatal car accident. After an unexpected inheritance from a great aunt, she's moved to a small New England town founded by her ancestors back in colonial times--and living in spacious Greyborne Manor, on a hilltop overlooking the harbor. Best of all, her aunt also left her countless first editions and other treasures--providing an inventory to start her own store. But there's trouble from day one, and not just from the grumpy woman who runs the bakery next door. A car nearly runs Addie down. Someone steals a copy of Alice in Wonderland. Then, Addie's friend Serena, who owns a nearby tea shop, is arrested--for killing another local merchant. The police seem pretty sure they've got the story in hand, but Addie's not going to let them close the book on this case without a fight . .

Murder by the Book is the first in the series, Beyond the Page Bookstore Mystery. Addie Greyborne moved to Greyborne Harbor for a fresh start. Her aunt, whom she didn‘t know, lived in a beautiful mansion with an amazing collection of first edition books and antiques. Her aunt recently died and left everything to Addie. She decided to use the collectibles as inventory to start her own book store.

After 5 days of intense 90++ heat & occasional brief thunderstorms, tonight‘s 70 temp with a cool breeze, is so so welcome!!! The lights make the space feel magical. I am so happy, so peaceful listening to the crickets chorus. 💚🧡💜 Sharing & sending that peaceful feeling, that swell of joy,to all Littens on this night.

sprainedbrain That sounds (and looks) lovely! 3y
Soubhiville It sounds perfect. Enjoy! 3y

Amiable It was so wonderful last night, wasn‘t it ? These are my favorite temperatures! Florida can keep the 90s + humidity—we don‘t need/want them here in Connecticut. 😖 3y
janeycanuck Oh my goodness - how have I never thought of a book light for outdoor nighttime reading?! You are a genius!! 3y

I can see why some people dig this book and series, but I found the characters repetitive and unrelatable. The story itself is unbelievable which doesn't usually bother me, but I couldn't jump on board this time. If you do pick this one up, I'd try to read it in one sitting or two. I'm annoyed I spent a week dragging it along!

Oooof. I really didn't like this Cozy. I wasn't sympathetic to the main character at all (just because someone has experienced a lot of loss-ridiculously so, does not immediately endear a reader to that character.) What I love about Cozies is the world building-feeling part of the towns and the community. Very very few people had any good qualities. Super one dimensional tropes. And I could care less about the setting and community. Painful read.

Librarybelle At least you could continue with both the readathon and conquered another cozy! 4y
SamanthaMarie @Librarybelle Yes, absolutely!! And I think it is only the second book I have read all year that I didn't like, so that is not so bad at all. :) 4y

Andrew65 2 books is great 👏👏👏 A shame it wasn‘t better. 4y
SamanthaMarie @Andrew65 Yes! And now I know I can clear off the other two books I have on my Kindle in the same series. So it was a lose-win. 😉😆 4y

ferskner Oh no! I had high hopes for this one. 4y
SamanthaMarie @ferskner I see that other people really like it on Goodreads and Amazon. So it definitely could be just not my cup of tea. 4y

I have a chunk of Cozies on my Kindle that I have bought or downloaded the last several months, so I am going to clear some of those out. Hopefully. 🤣 Starting with this new-to-me series.

The plot of this was excellent - twisty and complex but not so convoluted it made no sense - but the characters were problematic at best. I'm going to read the second book to see if that's just a first book in a series issue.

I fell asleep last night before I posted my #24in48 total. Not quite 24 but a solid amount of reading. I finished a couple of library books and DNF'd several books that sounded interesting but just didn't work for me.

Finally finished this POS. The main character is a thoroughly unlikeable busybody. The people who live in her town are just mean, nasty people, except the sheriff, and he needs to run far away from her. #goteam

Megabooks Sorry the book was bad, but great job on the fitness!! 5y
cewilf Nice walking and nutrition!! That‘s the worst about the book. Here‘s to a better next read :) 5y
KathyWheeler @Megabooks and @cewilf: I don‘t even know why I bothered to finish it. It got good reviews on Goodreads; there were a few people who felt like I do, but the majority rated it 4 or 5 stars. (edited) 5y

cobwebmoth Sorry the book didn't get any better. Awesome job with your fitness, though. 5y
TheEllieMo Every book I‘ve ever looked at on Goodreads seems to have lots of 4 or 5 star ratings; as a tool for book recommendations, it‘s not really that good! 5y
Emilymdxn Well you finished it! I agree goodresds reviews are really misleading, everyone seems to love everything. Totally agree @theelliemo Great progress! (edited) 5y
wanderinglynn Great job! 🙌🏻 but sorry your book was not good. 5y
rockpools Those are the Most Frustrating books! If everyone else loves them, I really feel like I‘m missing something 🙄. Great job on the walk& veggies tho. 5y
rockpools Yes! This is one of @Simona‘s nuggets of wisdom. Click edit. Click on the book title at the top of the screen. It gives you a ‘change book‘ option. (I think!) 5y
rockpools I may have just replied to a comment I only imagined 🤷🏻‍♀️. I blame the weather! 5y
KathyWheeler @RachelO you answered a legit comment. I deleted it because I figured it out right after I posted the comment and thought no one would‘ve had time to see it. 😄 (edited) 5y
rockpools @KathyWheeler 🤣🤣🤣 I could NOT work that out when I needed it! Still haven‘t found a way to switch from blurb to review though, sadly. 5y

Omg! Addie, the mc, is just awful! I hate her whiny, entitled brat self! When her friend (of two days) is arrested for murder, Addie pitches a fit until the sheriff allows her to help investigate. This line is almost verbatim: “I know she‘s your sister, but she‘s my FRIEND!” Because, you know the man can‘t possibly care more about his sister than a stranger can. UGH!

What do these two books have in common besides the fact that they‘re cozy mysteries? The fact that I find their main characters extremely annoying, but I can‘t tell if it‘s because of the narrators or if the characters are genuinely irritating. I didn‘t finish either and wonder if I should bother.

BethM Sometimes a narrator can really impact the story. 5y
KathyWheeler @BethM Yes, they really can. I listen to the Dresden Files books instead of reading them because James Marsters is such a fantastic narrator. The opposite might be going on here. (edited) 5y
BethM James Marsters does those?! I‘ll have to check out the audio for sure! 5y
KathyWheeler @BethM Yes, and he‘s great. If they ever decide to redo a Dresden Files show, he needs to be Harry. 5y

Perhaps it was my copy of the ebook from the library, but chapter 2 jumped straight into some things that weren‘t introduced in chapter 1 so I had a hard time following.

I came in assuming this was a new cozy series, but it read more like a romance/mystery with too much crammed in. Overall, I probably will not continue with this series.

Addie moves into a small New England town where she opens a bookstore. She get a new best friend Serena. Serena's brother is the sheriff and helps Addie when a fellow business man is murdered. This is a great new series Beyond the Page Bookstore and I look forward to reading more of these.
