Library 2020
Library 2020: Today's Leading Visionaries Describe Tomorrow's Library | Joseph Janes
23 posts | 1 read | 1 to read
Broadly representative of important perspectives and aspects within the profession as well as featuring important voices beyond the professional realm, Library 2020 presents thought-provoking and illuminating visions from many points of view. It is both required reading for library leaders and trustees as well as an ideal supplemental text for LIS classes looking at the future of the profession.

I am straight up the slowest at picking my favorite books for any one year of reading. Narrowing anything down is too much. So I finally posted my #20in20 list on my blog , in case you might want to go peek! Hint: it‘s organized using my blog topics: resist, relax, learn.

http://thebibliophage.com/2020-favorite-books/

Canadian.Reads I enjoyed reading your list, and appreciate the categories you have divided them into. It has been a strange year for reading and you managed to get through some tough reads despite it all! I have noted a few to read, thanks for sharing the link. 3y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Canadian.Reads Thank you for your kind words! I‘ve been using those categories on my blog since my 2016 “best of” list and plan to keep it up. Hope the suggestions prove helpful when you get around to the books! 3y
Amandajoy I loved reading Braiding Sweetgrass this year, I think it was my favorite! I think it‘s one I will be re-reading. 3y

BarbaraTheBibliophage @Amandajoy Dis you know there‘s a new anniversary hardcover edition out now? I am so tempted ... 3y
Amandajoy Yes! I asked for it for Christmas, but when my husband found out I had already read the book he couldn‘t understand why I wanted another edition. I may still buy it for myself. They had it at Barnes and Noble and it‘s so pretty. 3y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Amandajoy SMH at these non-readers ... Mr. B is exactly the same. 🤓 3y

BarbaraBB That is cool! How did you get those? 3y
AudiobookingWithLeah @BarbaraBB A very long spreadsheet in google sheets. 227 lines long for 227 books. I've been trying to teach myself (with a little help from the internet) how to use Sheets. 3y
BarbaraBB Very cool!!! I am in awe🤍 3y

AudiobookingWithLeah @BarbaraBB If you go on youtube, you can find lots of different spreadsheets for google sheets with all the formulas plugged in already that you can download. This is one that I just found today and I've just incorporated it into my sheet for this year. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iZhinxtTMFQ&ab_channel=BookRoast She explains how to download it and everything. 3y

Yep, I read/listen to an average of about 200 pages a day (3.5 to 5 hours) spread throughout the day but mostly I am a night owl. 🦉 I need HELP!

Bookzombie What a great reading year! 👏🏻👏🏻 3y

If nothing else, my 2020 had a lot of good reading. It also just worked out that the shortest book was the first one I read and the longest was the last one I finished!

I don‘t know about you, but I just love year end “best of” lists. I love the spin of this one—writers presenting the books from 2020 they thought were the best. I definitely added to my TBR!

https://www.theguardian.com/books/2020/dec/06/the-best-books-of-2020-picked-by-o...

Bookwormjillk I love them too! I‘ll check this out. 3y
Caroline2 I love them too. So many recommendations for Hamnet. 👍 3y
Librariana I love them four! ? I'm always on the lookout for magazines that have them ? Right now we've got issues of Library Journal and Publisher's Weekly going around our office and they've all got "Best of 2020" lists jammed pack with titles for various genres and formats ? 3y

LiteraryinLawrence I read this yesterday and my TBR exploded. 😋 3y
vivastory Will definitely check this out. Thanks for posting! 3y
Hooked_on_books @Librariana I love the separation out by genre! I envy your magazines. 🤓 3y

2020 hasn't been the best year and it hasn't been the best reading. But like elsewhere there have been bright moments, I moved in with my OH, got engaged and read these brilliant books. Clearly 2020 was my year for reading pretty dark books by women, with a few exceptions.

Cinfhen Congrats on engagement 🥂and cheers on reading so many wonderful books 📚 ❤️ 3y
saresmoore I think every year is a good year to read pretty dark books by women. 😂 3y
erzascarletbookgasm Great list. Screenshot it👍 3y

valeriegeary Yes I agree with @saresmoore. 🤣 And congrats on the engagement! 3y
batsy @saresmoore Agreed! 😆 3y
batsy I loved The Panopticon so it's great to see the new Jenni Fagan on your list! 3y
Moray_Reads @batsy the Panopticon is brilliant, it was also the last play I saw in the theatre before Covid! Luckenbooth is phenomenal, I absolutely loved it 3y
Moray_Reads @saresmoore @batsy @valeriegeary @erzascarletbookgasm @Cinfhen I can't seem to get enough, so if anyone had any recommendations in a similar vein, pass them my way! 3y
Cinfhen I‘m listening to this audiobook now, it‘s pretty dark 3y
Moray_Reads @Cinfhen I just added this to my TBR yesterday 🤣 3y
vivastory What a great list! Several on here that are on my immediate tbr: Hamnet, Discomfort, Bass Rock, Ducks. Will def be checking out those that I hadn't heard of. 3y
Moray_Reads @vivastory all brilliant, Sucks in particular is genius. That, In the Dream House and Luckenbooth were probably my favourite overall 3y

I think my resolution needs to be not being such a mood reader. This time last year I had planned to read through several series and I think I read through about 2. Occasional spontaneous reads are fine but I'm out of control 😂 Also I would like to commit myself to using Litsy more than my other social media. I never regret it. @MidnightBookGirl #LitsyResolutions

ljuliel I‘m wondering if your Mood Reading might inhibit planning ahead, say with the series you wanted to get further in ? If you‘re like me in my reading, the more of a schedule or structure I try to put on myself, the less I want to read those books. I just try to pick a book at a time, read wherever the wind blows me. It seems to be more productive that way. 4y
MidnightBookGirl I'm a mood reader too, but between running a bunch of book clubs and needing to review arcs for the bookstore, I've learned to be both mood and structured. It took awhile! 4y
MatchlessMarie @ljuliel I'm very much a list person. But when I am under stress sometimes I self sabotage my goals. I should probably make room for occasional mood reads in my 2020 reading goals. 4y
See All 6 Comments
MatchlessMarie @MidnightBookGirl I need to learn this skill for 2020! 4y
Bookzombie I know there is at least one Litten who pulls 10 books at a time for her TBR. Maybe you could still mood read but have a smaller selection to structure you some. 4y

Time to start planning 2020!! I did the first three this year, I hope to do them all in 2020! @morgankaileigh1 wanna join me? Thanks to @Cinfhen @BarbaraTheBibliophage and @4thhouseontheleft for hosting!

Princess.ofthe.pages Yes!!! Hopefully I can keep up this time 😂 4y
TheBookAddict 😳🙈I just remembered I signed up for the 2019! 🤦🏽‍♀️ I forgot. Life got in the way and I forgot. 😔 4y
Cinfhen Yay!!! Thanks for the repost and glad to hear you‘re coming back!!! No worries @TheBookAddict I bet if you look at the books you read in 2019 a bunch would fit the categories!!! Every book counts so no pressure if you don‘t complete the entire challenge @morgankaileigh1 💕📚🎉 4y
BarbaraTheBibliophage Thanks for sharing! So excited to have you guys on board for 2020! 4y

So this is my status for #20by2020

I‘ve read 4, and I‘ve currently put Pachinko in hold. I get easily distracted by new books and library holds arriving

MelissaSue81 Ooh! Lots of award winnder/Nominees. Only ones I have read are the Nickel Boys (loved), Pachinko (loved) The Overstory (liked) and My Sister The serial Killer (was okay, but i don't understand why its shortlisted at all!) (edited) 5y
megnews I do too. I may end up swiping out a few. Is that cheating? 😂 5y
AnneCecilie @MelissaSue81 I‘m looking forward to Nickel Boys and The Overstory, maybe next month. I‘m not connecting with Pachinko and I‘ve a strong feeling that it‘s me. I enjoyed My Sister, it was definitely what I needed at the time, but I understand the Longlist questions. (edited) 5y
See All 12 Comments
AnneCecilie @megnews I want to say no, but it‘s your challenge so you make the rules 😉 5y
SaturnDoo Ohhh the distractions 😂 I get distracted too and stray way off my beaten path with library book holds, overdrive and hoopla. If I would just quit looking at books and increasing my tbr I might get more read 😐 5y
KarenUK 😊👍💕 5y
Cinfhen I already bailed on one and swiped it with another 🤫🤫🤫 @megnews 5y
megnews @Cinfhen oh great! Now I won‘t feel guilty about it! 5y
megnews @SaturnDoo I know the feeling!! 5y
Cinfhen Nope!!! Reading is NEVER about guilt @megnews #SoManyBooksSoLittleTime and #SoFewWeeks 😉 5y
AnneCecilie @Cinfhen I so agree with you. Reading is supposed to be fun. Then I will do some shifts as well @megnews 5y

These are the 20 books I hope to read before the end of the year.

BarbaraBB Impressive list! Lots of Booker 😍 5y
AnneCecilie @BarbaraBB Thanks, but there are some easier reads there as well. I want to read as many of the Booker books that I can before the shortlist, and the books are either borrowed from the library or bought. 5y

Not the best prediction of the usage of Libraries in the next few years in my opinion.
I personally think that they‘ll still be around till the distant future myself.
