Finished all I could. I know it‘s a classic and we should read the classics but I just couldn‘t really get into it.

Octoberwoman I haven‘t read this one but I‘ve accepted that just because a book is a classic doesn‘t necessarily mean I‘ll like it. 11mo
willaful I really like this one, but I say there's no point in reading a classic you hate, you won't get anything out of it. 11mo
Darklunarose @willaful I‘m at a point where I give about 60 pages and if I can‘t get into it I put it down. That‘s not to say I won‘t like it at another stage, only that, apparently, now is not the right time for this one:) sometimes when I come back a few months or years later I am able to find a whole different perspective on a book. 11mo

willaful For sure! 11mo
Ephemera It might help to learn a bit about Fitzgerald and his fascination with wealthy people. 11mo
Darklunarose @Ephemera it was more his cousins husband smashing the face of his mistress that made me feel ick. I find DV very hard to read. 11mo
Darklunarose @Ephemera I think they need a “does the dog die” app…but for books. 11mo

(1925) I was an English major, so I've read about and talked about and occasionally made references to Gatsby. But I never took a course that required it: it's always been a text I intended to get around to.

Turns out it's brilliant, and I should have read it long ago. I'll certainly read it again.

I know it is a classic. And im glad I finally read it. But man, was it boring. One good lesson though, money can't buy you everything.

I'm ashamed to say I haven't read this. I was always a slow reader and my teachers made me feel bad about it. So instead of trying and failing, I just didn't try. But I was at my local bookshop and they have these beautiful editions of various classics so I picked it up 😊 ready to knock it off the list.

smalldogs_bigbooks2419 My favorite classic 😊 2y

I know that many people consider this to be one of the cornerstones of American literature. But, to be honest, I think there are better works out there.

While the ending is sad, for the most part, this book is pretty unremarkable.

Narration was alright. Monotone and matching the vanilla character of Nick Caraway.

Can listen to it if you want to check off a seminal work. But not really life changing (at least to me).

IuliaC I remember I enjoyed this one, but have read many years ago. I'm about to start 'Beautiful and Damned' to see how I feel about his writing now 2y

What a coincidence -- I was just thinking about this as a reading challenge for next year!

I don't directly lie about reading something I haven't -- well, not since my undergraduate days -- but there are several books that I've read about and heard about enough that I've sometimes talked about them *as if* I've read them. And I think there are enough I could read one per month for 2023. Starting with the tagged.

@ozma.of.oz

BkClubCare That‘s fine. I have read this one twice. I‘ll cover you 😂. I so get it! I can‘t recall if I‘ve truly really read Wuthering Hts. I think I will hate it if I give it a re(?)-read. 2y
swynn @BkClubCare Ha! Wuthering Heights would be on the challenge list, for sure! It's a book that friends occasionally reference, and I've seen a couple of film adaptations so I can grouse with anybody about Heathcliff's toxicity, but have I actually read it? Nope. 🤫 2y
BookmarkTavern That would be an interesting reading challenge! I‘m sure I could do one with all the books English majors are “supposed” to have read. 😂 Thanks for sharing! 2y

This review made me lol. I like Gatsby but I recall this feeling after several Edith Wharton and Henry James novels.

CogsOfEncouragement I read Gatsby in HS and didn‘t really get it. When a friend told me it was her favorite book I reread it in my early thirties. At which point I was irritated with all of the characters. None of them tending to what they should. Annoying. Don‘t see what others see that like it. 2y
AnnR That could have been my high school review of the book, if I didn't have to worry about getting a bad grade, lol. I didn't care for the movie version either. Ugh. 2y

I read The Great Gatsby in high school, and I enjoyed it. But that‘s been a while ago, so I decided it was time for a reread. Surprisingly enough my thoughts are still similar to the thoughts I had in high school. I still enjoyed it I just wish there was more character development. Plus, I‘d love to hear Gatsby‘s full back story.

Another reread, this time in audio. It was an interesting experience as hearing Daisy‘s speech inflections made her a more interesting character then when I just read the novel to myself.

Fitzgerald is amazing to listen to as an audio book, his sophisticated use of imagery and rhythm create poetic flow. The great Gatsby, uses this poetic devices when describing gatsbys enchanting parties which makes the novel immensely engaging. This novel compares to others of Fitzgerald, has a romanticised notion of ALL women, compared to that of the beautiful and the burdened that juxtaposes women against each other. It was a fun read. 4/5

Hello fellow littens!
I haven't posted in, well... quite some time. Two years to be precise. I don't know what came up to me today but here I am, wanting to pop in and say hi. Hope everyone's safe in this difficult time.
Oh, by the way, I re-read The Great Gatsby (which I didn't love the first time around), and really loved it this time.
Sleep tight! Bye

wordslinger42 Nice to have you back!! The Great Gatsby used to be a favorite of mine, but I haven't read it in a long time! 4y

paulfrankspencer It is a joy to see you back! And I reread Gatsby recently; loved it as much as always, and it's so short it's an easy one to revisit. 4y

A year ago my work friends and I coped with the world ending by blogging our reread of Pride and Prejudice. We had a blast and decided to make it an annual tradition. This year we are doing The Great Gatsby, and are hoping to get some more student involvement 😊

The spoils from my building‘s Book Exchange from last wk & some of my b‘day hamper from my sister that arrived yesterday a wk early. So much food & the most beautiful wine. These are the type of things that make social distancing fun. I didn‘t realise that Eve Babitz had slept with Jimbo from The Doors, I‘ve watched the movie Perfume but haven‘t read the book! It‘s a great movie, the tagged book is one of my favs. I also enjoyed the latest movie.

Former debutante Zelda and millionaire Gatz are the epitome of #cosmopolitanmc, if that implies the excess, decadence, idealism, and wealth of the “roaring ‘20s”. F. Scott Fitzgerald‘s The Great Gatsby follows a cast of characters living on prosperous Long Island in the summer of 1922.

#newyearnewyou

MissAimz_55 What is a cosmopolitan mc? 5y
Eggs Cosmopolitan Main Character @MissAimz_55 😊 5y
MissAimz_55 So a main character that is “a citizen of the world?” 5y
Eggs Yes. A person who is at home all over the world, someone who is widely travelled, is familiar with a variety of cultures and types of people and customs and ways of life. A smart, sophisticated, worldly, worldly-wise person: suave, urbane, civilized, cultivated, cultured, polished, refined. @MissAimz_55 5y
