Have You Seen Luis Velez? | Catherine Ryan Hyde
41 posts | 25 read | 38 to read
From New York Times bestselling author Catherine Ryan Hyde comes a moving novel about two strangers who find that kindness is a powerful antidote to fear. Raymond Jaffe feels like he doesn't belong. Not with his mother's new family. Not as a weekend guest with his father and his father's wife. Not at school, where he's an outcast. After his best friend moves away, Raymond has only two real connections: to the feral cat he's tamed and to a blind ninety-two-year-old woman in his building who's introduced herself with a curious question: Have you seen Luis Velez? Mildred Gutermann, a German Jew who narrowly escaped the Holocaust, has been alone since her caretaker disappeared. She turns to Raymond for help, and as he tries to track Luis down, a deep and unexpected friendship blossoms between the two. Despondent at the loss of Luis, Mildred isolates herself further from a neighborhood devolving into bigotry and fear. Determined not to let her give up, Raymond helps her see that for every terrible act the world delivers, there is a mirror image of deep kindness, and Mildred helps Raymond see that there's hope if you have someone to hold on to.

I LOVED this book. An awkward and lonely teenager stops to help an older blind woman one day and his life, purpose, self-understanding, and confidence are all changed in the journey that ensues. This book is heartwarming, unexpectedly deep, heart-wrenching, and charming. Highly recommend for an easy, fast, enjoyable read.

This is a amazing story about a kind teenager Raymond and his friendship with his elderly blind neighbor Millie. Millie lives in his building and asks him if he has seen a man Luis Velez that helps her and the story goes from there. This was a moving story of friendship, compassion, and empathy!
Highly recommend

I loved this book. It sounds like a formulaic friendship between the young and old. It is. A little. But there‘s so much more to it. I want to say “sweet” but that belittles it. It‘s a bigger story. ❤️❤️❤️

shellleigh33 I felt bad for the woman in general but I felt like she did not have remorse. This was very troublesome to me. Due to this I did not think her verdict was fair. (edited) 3y
sblbooks @shellleigh33 I was surprised by her lack of empathy after she found out that Louis was only trying to help her. I thought the prosecution should win the case I was surprised by the verdict too. 3y
Deblovestoread I was surprised the author didn‘t give her a moment to show remorse or sorrow over her taking of a life. I could believe her demeanor in the trail as I‘m sure her attorney would have coached her against showing emotions but a moment after of some compassion might have made me feel differently. I was shocked by the verdict. 3y
Chrissyreadit I was frustrated by the verdict and did not feel bad for the woman. I am sensitive to irresponsible gun ownership and how often innocent people are also victims of gun violence. 3y

CoffeeNBooks I think difficult situations often bring out the best in people. I think that in difficult situations, people are able to put themselves in other people's shoes and help in the way they would want to be helped. I wish people would do that more often, not just in difficult situations. 3y
sblbooks @CoffeeNBooks Agreed! it's a shame that it takes a disaster for communities to come together sometimes. 3y
Deblovestoread Sometimes it is easier to recognize what is needed when a community is affected over what an individual may need. It reminds me of a TSO song lyric “to know who needs help, you need only just ask” 3y
See All 6 Comments
Chrissyreadit I would say both. I‘ve witnessed excessive help after Hurricane Sandy, but minimal help for Pine Ridge Reservation as an example. 3y
sblbooks @Chrissyreadit good point. Pine Ridge was little before my time, but Native Americans are marginalized in America. 3y
Chrissyreadit Pine Ridge is the reservation- one of the poorest places in this country. One example of marginalization is Standing Rock- the water rights and land rights were completely disregarded, while the pipeline has in the meantime leaked and devestated their water source. 3y

shellleigh33 I wish I had more time to spend with my family and friends especially during this past year. 3y
sblbooks @shellleigh33 This book definitely made me think about how I spend my time. It also motivated me too look for ways to help those around me. I wish I had more time to spend with my elderly Aunt. Unfortunately covid-19, has restricted that. 3y
Deblovestoread I think this is typical of our society to recognize a desire to do more but have trouble finding or making the time to do so. I know I could do more than I do. 3y
Chrissyreadit I think our culture is more individual than collective in its thinking, and often judge mental. But I‘m in a helping field so I see the darker side of things. 3y

CoffeeNBooks Raymond is definitely very thoughtful, and maybe he goes out of his way to make others feel like they belong since he doesn't always feel like he belongs. 3y
sblbooks @CoffeeNBooks Yes, he is thoughtful. I think Raymond can relate to the stray Cat. How you treat animals says a lot about you as a person. 3y
shellleigh33 I believe that this shows that Raymond is a very kind hearted person that is very selfless. He has such a big, caring heart for others. 3y

sblbooks @shellleigh33 Agreed! That's why he was willing to help mrs. G, when others just ignored her. 3y
Blackink_WhitePaper @sblbooks you are absolutely correct. How one treats animals and strangers reveals a lot about that person. Raymond treats the stray cat as well as Mrs G with kindness. He is truly a kindred spirit. 3y
Deblovestoread I can‘t believe I missed this. So sorry...I agree that young Raymond has a caring heart. He had love to give and did not have a family that‘s seemed open to receiving it. 3y

It‘s a uplifting story of friendship between a 17 year old Raymond n 90 year old Mrs G, how they help each other, & make peace with life. The story delicately portrays several aspects of racism, law enforcement and even the WW II related genocide. However the centre pillar of the story stands on empathy n kindness. A slow paced , peaceful read much appropriate for 2020. Glad I picked this for #overbookedclub 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

This was not high on my radar- but was picked for a buddy read. It was on my kindle so easily read when I let the dog out at 3 am. But I could not stop reading it. And now it is finished. It was almost too good at times, and sharing too many messages. But they were clearly the messages I needed to know others care about too. And I really need things to be too good sometimes. So I loved this. I‘m very grateful the #overbooked group chose it.

This book begins with a teenage boy starts helping an older woman who is looking for her last caregiver Luis Velez who has not showed up in a while. This story starts simplistically with Raymond on a mission and it metamorphoses into a very timely story that takes on Race and our legal system. This was an excellent read. This is my first book from Hyde that I have read, but look forward to reading more.

Have You Seen Luis Velez? by the incomparable Catherine Ryan Hyde, is a perfect choice to read in the land of aloha with a view of Moloka'i (especially if you know that island's history). She writes so beautifully about the human spirit with such seeming ease and compassion. She's one of my all-time favorite authors.
