100p in & I was ready to bail. The writing felt awkward & the characters behaviours off kilter. There was a coldness to the writing. But then came a plot twist that sent me racing through the middle section of the book, which was a very absorbing look at one woman coping with mental illness. The voice felt authentic and the drama real. The last 50 pages - returned to a rather clumsy ending.
Trigger Warnings for rape, child abuse and suicide.

My books arrived today 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
1.) I donate books that I read once a year unless the book was profound and then I keep it. This has started to change as most of my books are library books that I borrow.
2.) 300 pages 3 to 4 days. 400+ 5 to 7 days.
3.) The tagged book Speaking of Summer it was too slow for me.
@wanderinglynn
So I have read up to a 109 pages of this book and I don't like it. It's not intriguing to me. So I am gonna bail
Oh well. On to better things!
Picking this one back up from the unfinished stack on my bedside table. I know summer is gone now (it‘s cold here!) and coincidentally, the main character‘s sister Summer is also gone in this book. Sorry! That was too too cheesy for words. 🤣
Absolutely not what I expected, but somehow more. Rich and beautiful and poignant.
I love discovering a new to me author with a backlist. While ostensibly about the disappearance of a woman, this gorgeously written novel is about seeing, hearing, believing, and valuing women, particularly black women in America. There is so much truth and humanity in this. I am a gigantic fan. 4⭐️.
Perfect timing @LeahBergen cause my current read has me 😍. #7Days7Covers #CoverCrush
Show me what you got folks! Open invitation to all!
“I wanted to find the books where the authors had fangs, horns, and blisters on their knuckles.”
I like Buckhanon‘s writing, and her previous book Upstate. I did not like this book. This book isn‘t about Autumn, it‘s not about her missing sister Summer. It is about unreliable narrators, mental illness, trauma, how black men get shot and there are riots, but how so many black women go missing in silence. It‘s about struggle, both real and unreal.
This one did not go as I had expected, yet I enjoyed the read and appreciated the perspective.
@BookishMarginalia they have arrived! You‘re too generous—thank you so much. I really look forward to both of these.
DNF. Unfortunately I watched a spoiler-y YouTube review coupled with the fact that I disliked the writing style. I was forcing myself to continue with this until I was not. Back to the library it goes!
So a funny story about this book. I went to B&N looking for this book without the title of the author‘s name. All I remembered was Summer, an orange cover and the girl in profile with flowers covering her face. Based on that one of the representatives found it for me. I‘m on my way home today. While I wait for my plane and en route back home, I plan to start. 🙂
I think this new release is going to be my weekend read.🌺🌼 #kalishabuckhanon #blackwomanwriter #bookcoverlove
Revisiting this book this morning. What are you reading this weekend? 🌺🌿🌼
The great room is getting painted so everything is under plastic again, my usual reading couch included. I‘m going to have to find a different spot to read this one.
Today in kitten exploiting: LOOK AT THIS COVER. It‘s 🔥🔥🔥! I can‘t wait to read this. 📚❤️📚
