Vietnam
Vietnam: Rising Dragon | Bill Hayton
3 posts | 1 read
The eyes of the West have recently been trained on China and India, but Vietnam is rising fast among its Asian peers. A breathtaking period of social change has seen foreign investment bringing capitalism flooding into its nominally communist society, booming cities swallowing up smaller villages, and the lure of modern living tugging at the traditional networks of family and community. Yet beneath these sweeping developments lurks an authoritarian political system that complicates the nations apparent renaissance. In this engaging work, experienced journalist Bill Hayton looks at the costs of change in Vietnam and questions whether this rising Asian power is really heading toward capitalism and democracy. Based on vivid eyewitness accounts and pertinent case studies, Haytons book addresses a broad variety of issues in todays Vietnam, including important shifts in international relations, the growth of civil society, economic developments and challenges, and the nations nascent democracy movement as well as its notorious internal security. His analysis of Vietnams police state, and its systematic mechanisms of social control, coercion, and surveillance, is fresh and particularly imperative when viewed alongside his portraits of urban and street life, cultural legacies, religion, the media, and the arts. With a firm sense of historical and cultural context, Hayton examines how these issues have emerged and where they will lead Vietnam in the next stage of its development.

Clearly America is incapable of learning from past mistakes. I would have hoped scenes like this would have been relegated to history books, but that was a ridiculous pipe dream, obviously. Biden even pulled a Trump and blamed him for this. I am heartbroken and disgusted.
I‘m not a Republican, I‘ve never been a Republican, I will never be a Republican, but Biden better hope he‘s the lesser of two evils when it comes time for reelection.

kspenmoll It‘s heartbreaking to see this unfold. 3y
RamsFan1963 We never learn from history. Afganistan will go down as Vietnam 2.0. There's so many parallels between the scenes in Kabul and the fall of Saigon that its truly heartbreaking. 3y
GingerAntics @RamsFan1963 exactly. I think the thing the made it the worse for me was when Biden dodged any blame for pulling American troops by saying it was Trump‘s fault he had to pull our troops in the first place. 🙄 3y
RamsFan1963 @GingerAntics Yes I agree, I found it very disappointing and it's something that's going to come back to haunt Dems in 2024. Honesty, US foreign policy for the last 21 years is to blame for this disaster. 3y
GingerAntics @RamsFan1963 oh yeah. This all started with W. I think the problem the Dems are going to face in 2024 is only partly up to them. Voter restriction is going to cause a much bigger problem (for a lot longer). 3y

Chrissyreadit Growing up with the effects of the war in the back of my head and having been raised on the soldiers view of Viet Nam left me shying away from stories and books about it. But between the podcast and this article it has rapidly become a place I want to visit and learn more about. I‘m so glad this was our second country 🧡🧡🧡 4y
