The Last Book Party
The Last Book Party | Karen Dukess
A propulsive tale of ambition and romance, set in the publishing world of 1980s New York and the timeless beaches of Cape Cod. In the summer of 1987, 25-year-old Eve Rosen is an aspiring writer languishing in a low-level assistant job, unable to shake the shadow of growing up with her brilliant brother. With her professional ambitions floundering, Eve jumps at the chance to attend an early summer gathering at the Cape Cod home of famed New Yorker writer Henry Grey and his poet wife, Tillie. Dazzled by the guests and her burgeoning crush on the hosts artistic son, Eve lands a new job as Henry Greys research assistant and an invitation to Henry and Tillies exclusive and famed "Book Party" where attendees dress as literary characters. But by the night of the party, Eve discovers uncomfortable truths about her summer entanglements and understands that the literary world she so desperately wanted to be a part of is not at all what it seems. A page-turning, coming-of-age story, written with a lyrical sense of place and a profound appreciation for the sustaining power of books, The Last Book Party shows what happens when youth and experience collide and what it takes to find your own voice.

I enjoyed this more than expected given the mixed reviews I‘ve been seeing. I thought the ‘climax‘ and ending were a little weak but up to that point I was really into the summery Cape Cod in the 80‘s vibe.

I really wish I‘d been reading this on a lovely beach rather than gearing up for Canadian winter. I‘ve only been to Cape Cod once to visit a cousin, but this book makes me want to angle for another invite.

It was a lovely day to sit outside my library and finish this one up (and try to avoid buying books at the book sale). This was between a pick and so-so, but I enjoyed reading it. I liked the summer Cape Cod setting in this story of finding your own voice. 3.5⭐️

#TBRtemptation post 3! Set in 1980s #NYC. 25-year-old aspiring writer Eve feels stuck in a low-level publishing assistant job. She gets invited to a Cape Cod summer party for renowned writer Henry Grey and his poet wife Tillie. She lands a job as Henry‘s research assistant and falls for Henry‘s artistic son. By the time of H & T‘s famed Book Party, where guests dress up as literary characters, she discovers 😳 truths. #blameLitsy #blameMrBook 😎

Do you ever feel like starting over and being anonymous in a place you've never been before?

TheDaysGoBy Sometimes. It‘s kinda hard though. I did it right out of college and you learn pretty quick how hard it is to find a good dentist, mechanic, etc when you don‘t have people you trust to give recommendations 3mo
ElizaMarie I travel for a job. So I take these 3 month contracts (sometimes I extend) it‘s a little scary the first week or two where you get lost going everywhere but then you end up meeting people who show you the ropes so it makes it a bit better 3mo

I may be in the minority, but I found this a perfect, little end-of-summer read. Nothing groundbreaking, but charming and enjoyable. An 80‘s set, Cape Cod location, a young bookish protagonist trying to find her way as a writer, a summer fling with an older man.... culminating in a Labor Day party where guests dress as favorite literary characters! Fun and throwaway but just what I needed after the storm stress of the last couple of weeks! ⭐️⭐️⭐️

I think I‘m in the minority‘s here but I really liked this one. I have tried to limit my review to the allotted space and just can‘t do it so I‘m skipping it. Suffice it to say I enjoyed it and if nothing else, it has a lot of bookish references and is a quick read!

Bkwurm Your review intrigued me so much I had to go look it up on Goodreads. 😁 I‘ve added it to my TBR. Thanks! 3mo

Well, I love the cover even though it lacks an 80s feel. Except for some fun name-dropping of 80s titles, this was less than a meh for me. The author didn‘t develop Eve or Frannie into characters I cared about. Henry and Tillie‘s marriage or lack thereof was of no interest. Jeremy‘s story and the underdeveloped why of it could have been the most interesting aspect to unpack, but he was a secondary character.

"The Last Book Party" is just a giant cliche. I found the plot and the characters to be utterly predictable. The only surprising revelation revolved around Jeremy and what I found out about him only made me dislike him as much as the rest of the characters. Glad this was a quick read. ?

I really thought I would like this book and I did not. I found the main character annoying and unrelatable. The narrative of the story felt very disjointed. I was grateful it was a relatively short book.

Went to the B&N book haul but picked books not part of the deal. So they wouldn‘t give me or sell to me the cute book haul bag. But I am really looking forward to reading these books, so much so I couldn‘t pick which one to read first. So I had my little one pick for me, he picked The Last Book Party. He marched right up, grabbed it, and handed it to me. He said he picked it because it was closest to him and that is how you pick books!

I didn't know what to expect with The Last Book Party. It was very atmospheric; every time I read, I was transported right into the book. I also loved how bookish it was Unfortunately I could not connect with the main character. She made such foolish decisions, and as a reader, there just wasn't any payoff. There were *two* plot twist close together, that had no real consequences.

Henry and Tillie Grey, famous writer/poet, host an annual costume book party every Labor Day. But 1987 will be the one to remember! The characters: Henry's assistant Eve, Henry's son Frannie and delicate girlfriend Lil, Frannie's best bud Jeremy, Tilie and her assistant Lane. Setting: Cape Cod. Conflict: MANY. Resolution: possibly???

Eh. I don't know if it's simply because I could feel an affair coming and I loathe protagonists who get in the middle of a marriage or if this book just simply wasn't for me. I loved the Book Party idea (dressing up as book characters) but other than that I kept visualizing the book as the movie Mystic Pizza in my head but revolving around a writer's beach front home instead of a pizzeria. Weird? Maybe. Owell. On to the next book.

Started my day by finishing this book. Eve spends a memorable summer on Cape Cod exploring her desires and ambitions. A true coming of age story that involves romance, self-development, and a look into the publishing world of days past. Definitely a quick summer read that covers some important ideas without being too heavy.

P.S. Lots of literary references in this one! I had to look some up as I read.

@Mowen036 Thanks for the chance to win your giveaway! I love your question!

If I could dress up as any book character, it would be September from Cat Valente's Fairyland series. She wears an orange dress & a green smoking jacket & looks like Autumn incarnate. If I could do it without the non-literati asking who I was all night, I'd dress up as September for Halloween in a heartbeat. Can we have regional Litsy Halloween costume parties this year?
