His Hideous Heart
His Hideous Heart: Thirteen of Edgar Allan Poe's Most Unsettling Tales Reimagined | Dahlia Adler
Thirteen of YAs most celebrated names reimagine Edgar Allan Poes most surprising, unsettling, and popular tales for a new generation. Edgar Allan Poe may be a hundred and fifty years beyond this world, but the themes of his beloved works have much in common with modern young adult fiction. Whether the stories are familiar to readers or discovered for the first time, readers will revel in Edgar Allan Poes classic tales, and how theyve been brought to life in 13 unique and unforgettable ways. Contributors include Kendare Blake (reimagining Metzengerstein), Rin Chupeco (The Murders in the Rue Morge), Lamar Giles (The Oval Portrait), Tessa Gratton (Annabel Lee), Tiffany D. Jackson (The Cask of Amontillado), Stephanie Kuehn (The Tell-Tale Heart), Emily Lloyd-Jones (The Purloined Letter), Hillary Monahan (The Masque of the Red Death), Marieke Nijkamp (Hop-Frog), Caleb Roehrig (The Pit and the Pendulum), and Fran Wilde (The Fall of the House of Usher).

I‘m not a huge fan of short stories but some of these were absolute bangers. Some were just alright. Def worth a read tho- some rly cool surprises in there, in addition to the classics that comprise the second half of the book!

Chrissyreadit Just saw sign up for blitsy and immediately thought of you and how much I loved your package and how bad I am at sending letters… but think you‘re awesome! 2y
Nalbuque @Chrissyreadit I just got the tag and signed up myself!! I‘m so glad you liked the package, I can‘t wait to send another one out :))) hope you get a great one next year as well! 2y

I‘m apparently on a re-telling kick lately. This is reimaginings of thirteen Poe tales. A mixed bag, but they were all interesting. I couldn‘t figure out at first why the audiobook was so long, but it also includes the original stories and poems. Took this picture today while we were geocaching and it seems appropriately terrifying for Poe stories!

Sometimes ya just gotta eat half of a scone off of a festive plate while rotating between His Hideous Heart, My Best Friend's Exorcism, and booktube. Spooky scone season, babyyyyy 👻

This week is all about finishing up some outstanding books - so my #weeklyforecast will primarily be focused on the above books. I may get to some other side books (as I do, lol), but I really really want to check all of these of my list by Saturday (and one is a book club book so I HAVE to finish by Friday) 😄

A really cool concept for a YA anthology! Diverse authors each pick an Edgar Allen Poe story and retell it. The book also includes the original stories in the 2nd half (although I wonder if they might have been better placed before, since the retellings have more meaning if you're familiar w/ the original). Standouts include "She Rode a Horse of Fire" Kendare Blake, "It's Carnival" by Tiffany Jackson, & "Happy Days Sweetheart" by Stephanie Kuehn.

Okay, I LOVED this. I adore Edgar Allan Poe and his twisted tales, so I was hesitant to start this. The hype is real though, friends, the hype is real 😍 my favourite stories were the ones based on Ligeia and The Cast of Amontillado.

Looking for a YA short story collection retelling Edgar Allan Poe‘s tales?!? 13 of them to be precise? Look no further, this book has you covered. And for a bonus it includes the original tales as well. On the whole I liked all the stories & there‘s a good mix of horror, creepy, & simply atmospheric & moody—in other words, there‘s something for everyone. It definitely fit well with the autumn/Halloween vibe.

❄️❄️❄️That‘s right, we‘re under a Winter Weather Advisory today with a strong chance of accumulating snow through Halloween...❄️☃️🎃☃️❄️... This is a little unusual for Chicago this time of year (though not unheard of). So don‘t mind me, I‘m just going curl up with this entertaining collection of short stories and a hot cup of tea and not go outside until I have to!

This has to be my next read, doesn‘t it? I mean, Halloween is right around the corner and what better way to get ready than to read some original and reimagined Edgar Allan Poe tales? 🍁🍂👻💀🎃🍂🍁

While nothing in this anthology blew my mind I enjoyed each story! A lot of Poe's macabre plots creep me out even more when enacted by teens. Plus: the stories that did the inspiring are included too!

This was so much fun to read and perfect for the spooky season! I always loved Poe in high school but it had been forever since I‘d read his stories and this book has them all laid out in the back with the reimagined works in the front. I flipped back and forth for every story and my favorites was the Annabel retelling and Lygia retelling, least favorite the Fall of the House Usher retelling. Also the black out Raven by Amanda Lovelace was great!

Other than a couple stories, Poe's writing really dragged this down. And I only really liked a couple of the reimagined stories as well. Probably just the wrong time for me and this book, but yeah.

Poe fans! What‘s your favorite story or poem by Edgar Allan Poe?

My favorite story is The Tell-Tale Heart and my favorite poem is Annabel Lee. ❤️

diovival Tough question! The Murders in the Rue Morgue is up there. 5y
ravenlee Not sure about story, but Annabel Lee is my favorite poem with The Raven a close second (hence my username, actually). 5y

Heading into Halloween, we will get a chance to read new takes on Poe's classics. Should be interesting. And I think they did the black red and white thing really well here by incorporating the blue.

EadieB @Butterflyamore I like most of your book picks and will probably read:
Playing Dead, The Illness Lesson, This Tender Land, Dear Edward, Ten Thousand Doors of January, His Hideous Heart and Widow of Pale Harbor. I have read all of William Kent Krueger's books and love his writing. His series is great and love Cork O'Connor. I would like to read Brigid Kemmerer but should read her first book. I'm a fan or Poe too so those 2 books are a must.
5y
EadieB @Butterflyamore Some books I am interesting in reading are: The Lying Room by Nicci French due out 10/1/19. Ioved her Frieda Klein series. The Wives by Tarryn Fisher due out 12/30/19. Ask Again, Yes by Mary Beth Keane and What You Did by Claire McGowan. I enjoyed McGowan's Paula Maguire series. I have a lot of series that I am reading and trying to compete so that's what I am looking forward to. (edited) 5y

abookishbutterfly @EadieB I am interested in The Lying Room as well and might include it in my next thriller video. I‘ve heard Nicci French is a husband/wife team, which is cool! I haven‘t read the series yet but I do have Blue Monday in my stack. I have Ask Again, Yes as well but it‘s another I haven‘t gotten to yet! 5y
EadieB @Butterflyamore I had to look again at the title of Nicci French's book. It looked like The Living Room to me and I'm glad I saw your post because I've read it a couple of times and didn't notice the correct title. lol Yes they are a husband/wife team. Some of their books are so/so but the Frieda Klein series was very good. I think you mentioned Ask Again, Yes before and that's why I had it listed. Anyway, thanks for mentioning the new books! 5y
abookishbutterfly Haha! I thought it was just an autocorrect typo because autocorrect always changes words on me! 5y
