Fleishman Is in Trouble
Fleishman Is in Trouble: A Novel | Taffy Brodesser-Akner
A finely observed, timely exploration of marriage, divorce, and the bewildering dynamics of ambition from one of the most exciting writers working todayfor readers of Jonathan Franzen, Lauren Groff, and Tom Perrotta Toby Fleishman thought he knew what to expect when he and his wife of almost fifteen years separated: weekends and every other holiday with the kids, some residual bitterness, the occasional moment of tension in their co-parenting negotiations. He could not have predicted that one day, in the middle of his summer of sexual emancipation, Rachel would just drop their two children off at his place and simply not return. He had been working so hard to find equilibrium in his single life. The winds of his optimism, long dormant, had finally begun to pick up. Now this. As Toby tries to figure out where Rachel has gone, all while juggling his patients at the hospital, his never-ending parental duties, and his new dating appassisted sexual popularity, his tidy narrative of the spurned husband with the too-ambitious wife is his sole consolation. But if Toby ever wants to truly understand what happened to Rachel and to his marriage, he is going to have to consider that maybe he never saw things all that clearly in the first place. A searing, utterly unvarnished debut, Fleishman Is in Trouble is an insightful, unsettling, often hilarious exploration of a culture trying to navigate the fault lines of marriagean institution that has proven to be worthy of both our great wariness and our great hope. Advance praise for Fleishman Is in Trouble Blisteringly funny, feverishly smart, heartbreaking, and true, Fleishman Is in Trouble is an essential read for anyone whos wondered how to navigate loving (and hating) the people we choose.Cynthia DAprix Sweeney, author of The Nest

This was The Laws of the Skies all over again for me. This was such a horror to read and I cried all the way through Toby‘s part. And then I got to Rachel‘s. Which kind of pissed me off. Maybe I‘m not the progressive feminist I thought I was, and I‘m sorry women get punished for being ambitious, but I‘m having a hard time not believing she sold her family out for what amounts to keeping up with the Joneses. This book was very well written. Pick!

TrishB Great review Reggie! I‘ve had it stacked for a while- waiting for an offer! now

The first half, I was worried. I thought the book was weird, going nowhere.

I was wrong.

This book definitely went there. Part two is excellent. I culled this quote to help you through part one from there. By part three, the points she was hitting about early middle age, career, family, trade offs, especially the ones women make, I was like damn, let me take some notes.

Going to be in the top ten of the year for me! Highly recommend! 5⭐️

I wish I had liked this book more. I think there might have been an enormous amount of brilliance in the story, but I struggled and whined through the majority of the book. Marriage is hard, divorce is hard, women do the majority of the mental & emotional side of parenting, apps make it easy to have sex. There. Those, to me, were the key points. My daughter was quite eloquent though in explaining the nuances that i missed while I was whining.

Alfoster I SO agree! I wanted to like this book so much more! I just felt glad I‘m not having to date in this era of Tinder and other social media sites!😳😁 1w

Suet624 @Reggie exactly right! I kept reading because of the writing but it was deeeepressing. I actually suggested to my new daughter-in-law that she not read it. I told her I didn‘t want the rosy glow she emanated to fade. 1w

This story of the troubled marriage of a middle-aged couple really resonated with me. Told from the frame of a friend and examining first the husband‘s perspective and then the wife‘s, what could be trite and gimmicky worked to effectively examine aging and parenthood and sexism and miscommunication and trauma and human foibles. A lovely debut. #toblonglist #tob

Excuse me? From the back of the book. Sardonically cheerful? It‘s sardonic all right, but I haven‘t found one cheerful note within it.

AmyG Yeah, I didn‘t find this a cheerful book at all. Also....Happy Thanksgiving! (edited) 2w
Suet624 @AmyG Same to you, Amy. Best wishes to you. 2w
tournevis Maybe schadenfreude? 2w
See All 6 Comments
Suet624 @tournevis Hmmm... maybe. This is just painful. I actually suggested to my brand new daughter-in-law that she might not want to read it. I don't want her to lose her joy in this new marriage. It's just a depressing catalog of marital despair. 2w
Suet624 @tournevis however, it seems as though the majority of folks really like the book, so there‘s that. What‘s funny is I have divorced 3 times, so in theory I should agree with her negative analysis of marriage. After complaining about the book to my older daughter (who had given me the book), she said, “Yes, but isn‘t it affirming for you?” When I thought of it that way, in fact I did find it affirming. I had thought I was just messed up! 😂😂 2w

Although the best surgeons also have empathy, it‘s so essential to internal medicine because there are serious illnesses and usually long term relationships. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 Right on!

Lizpixie Preach! So many doctors are just horrible at communicating, it‘s called patient CARE for a reason you arrogant twats. I can honestly say out of the 100s of doctors I‘ve seen in the past 48yrs, I can count on one hand the compassionate ones. There was a rheumatologist, a pulmonologist, a GP, a neurosurgeon... I think that‘s it. The rest all had that holier than thou attitude & just made me feel stupid.🤨 2w
Megabooks @Lizpixie They can be really terrible sometimes. I‘ve been lucky that I‘ve been able to be picky and make good connections, especially since I got my veterinary degree. Doctors tend to respect other doctors more, which works works in my favor, but I wish it was better for everyone!! 2w
Amiable There‘s a really good book that talks about the difference between “successful” and “unsuccessful” sociopaths, from the theory that there are some professions where being emotionally detached is actually a plus. Surgeons have a statistically large proportion of sociopaths in their field. I definitely recommend the book: 2w
See All 10 Comments
Megabooks @Amiable that does not surprise me. The best doctors/surgeons are humble and confident. The absolute worst have a tremendous god complex and refuse to listen or learn. 2w
Megabooks @Amiable I think I can understand what they‘re saying about detached because I wouldn‘t have burned out on private practice as quickly had I not gotten so close to my patients. But also, I think there is some self selection into surgery of the doctors with the worst “social skills”. (edited) 2w
Jee_HookedOnBookz Can't wait to read your review on this! 2w
Megabooks @Jee_HookedOnBookz I‘m really enjoying it so far. It took me awhile to understand where the author was trying to go, but once it clicked, it‘s good! (edited) 2w
Jee_HookedOnBookz @Megabooks so happy to hear that! Now I'm not sure if I shd wait my turn on Libby (which is a looong wait) or just get a copy myself 😅 I'll probably play by ear... Lol 2w
Amiable @Megabooks The theory is more that there are fields where being emotionally distant enables the person to actually do the job. Surgeons must be able to pick up a knife and cut into a human being -- many people just can't handle doing that. Same with police officers and the military -- they may have to shoot to kill. The author says that having typical sociopathic traits like a lack of empathy allow these people to be successful in their jobs. 2w
Amiable I highly recommend the book -- it really made me think and see various professions in a whole different way. I work in healthcare and deal with surgeons and doctors every single day, and it gave me valuable insight into their personalities that I've found helpful in my job. (edited) 2w

So well written! I like the way this story about the end of a relationship is seen from the side of the wife, the husband, and one of his friends. On the surface, Toby and Rachel have everything they need to be happy, but an inability to communicate ruins their marriage. 4/5

Okay, I think I‘m ready for my first #weeklyforecast, Cindy! I think I‘m a little ambitious with the fiction, but we‘ll see. I‘m such a terrible mood reader. I‘ve started all of them but Bunny. For some reason it sounds good.

Also, I‘m finally regularly feeling kind of normal for hours at a time! 🥳🥳

Sace I'm a major mood/free range reader and the weekly forecasting has really helped me to focus on just a week by week basis which means I still feel like I'm mood reading since in my head I'm thinking more along the lines of a time period and not committing to one particular book. 2w
Megabooks @Sace that‘s a very good point. I‘ve never really thought about it from that perspective. I can usually finish four or more books in a week, but this is the first week of my recovery that I feel I can even attempt to a) finish more than one or two books and b) predict being awake, in little enough pain, and able to concentrate to begin to do much of anything. I made a pizza tonight! That‘s a big deal for me so 👍🏻😁 2w
Cinfhen I‘m excited for your lineup and so glad you‘re starting to feel “normal.” I‘ve heard mixed reviews about Bunny. So I‘m excited to see what you think. 2w
Megabooks @Cinfhen I was on the fence about Bunny because I felt ambivalent about her debut, but I ended up getting it after @Lindy ‘s quotes and review. It‘s different than 90% of what I read so we‘ll see! And thank you!! 2w

#weeklyforecast @Cinfhen
My report card would say ‘must do better‘ this week!
My plan is.....

- Finish up the Ocean Vuong, which I‘m loving but reading slowly...
- start ‘Fleishman is in trouble‘ which is a library hold that just came in...
- Finish up the Boyne.... it‘s got that perfect gothic spookiness, which I‘m loving.
- Start ‘Erotic stories‘ for a bookclub...

Cinfhen It looks like a great week of upcoming reads!!!! 2w
Cathythoughts Nice 👍🏻❤️ 2w

Seems pretty appropriate to be restarting this book while watching 90 Day Fiancé Happily Ever After!

I need a physical book to balance my ebooks. Does anyone else get eye strain from iPads/ereaders? Anyone know which are best for your eyes?

BeccawithaBook I just got those blue light glasses and they have been helping me. Lot! 3w
Megabooks @BeccawithaBook I wear glasses for vision all the time. I wonder if I can get that as a coating on them? 🤔 3w

Megabooks @BeccawithaBook oh fantastic!! Thanks!! 3w
ljuliel I recently got the Oasis with the warm light setting. I have it set for the warmest level. It doesn‘t bother my eyes as much as my iPad screen, nor the white- lighted kindle. 3w
TheAromaofBooks I was amazed at how much easier it is to read on my Kindle Paperwhite than it was on the normal screen of my phone or old Kindle Fire. The non-reflective screen and adjustable lighting really makes a difference - but I have to say that I still prefer paper!! 3w
Jee_HookedOnBookz I love my paperwhite! Fleishman seems to be getting very different reviews. I'm still not sure if it's for me and Libby is on a 20-week wait! 😑 3w
Megabooks @ljuliel @TheAromaofBooks Thank you for the advice! My mom has a very old paperwhite that I want to try before I potentially decide between an oasis and paperwhite. It would be nice to look around the Christmas/Black Friday sales. Thank you both! 3w
Megabooks @Jee_HookedOnBookz I think I‘m going to try my mom‘s paperwhite. I bailed on Fleishman before my surgery, but then I read @Samplergal ‘s review, and then it seemed to make more sense, and I want to finish it now. 3w
ljuliel Good luck and happy shopping ! 3w
ljuliel @Jee_HookedOnBookz Sorry to hear you had surgery. I hope you‘re on the mend and feeling better now. 3w
Megabooks @ljuliel Thanks! 3w
TheAromaofBooks Amazon usually does have a big Black Friday sale for Kindles, and another big sale in July. I got mine around $30 off, if I remember correctly. 2w
Samplergal I have pretty weird eye issues, being 63, dry eye, having really bad near sightedness and some cornea damage. My paperwhite works well for me. With backlight. 2w
Megabooks @Samplergal that‘s what they told me when I was working. That my lipid layer of tears is deficient. I‘m also severely near sighted (I can‘t see anything other than outlines without my glasses), but my cornea is fine, fortunately. It‘s good to know your paperwhite works well. My mom is similar to me, but she had her nearsightedness corrected with her cataracts. (She‘s 75.) she has been using a paperwhite. I‘ll have to try hers. Thank you so much! 2w
Samplergal @Megabooks I hope you find it works. I‘ve slowly gone from real books to more ebooks and audiobooks. It‘s like all my age mates getting new knees and hips I guess. 😘 2w
Megabooks @Samplergal I hope your knee and hip replacements went well! 💙💙💙 I love that you can increase the font size in ebooks. But there is just something about a paper book. I do all three types, but change how much of each at various times. 2w

Throughout this book, I constantly and fiercely flipped from loving it to hating it, and I very nearly bailed halfway. So I‘m really surprised to find myself saying this, but I think this might be one of the best books I‘ve read all year! The last 70 pages (Rachel‘s section) were phenomenal and I finally got it. It‘s layered, clever and really insightful. Highly recommend...even if I did spend most of my time eye rolling Fleishman!

How do I feel about this? It‘s undoubtedly well written and the storyline is compelling. Yet I am conflicted. As a satire of marriage and upper middle class middle age woes it‘s en point and unflinchingly honest. However much of the story is written in ‘might as well be first person‘ which I found really difficult especially as we hit the last fifth of the books which felt a little rushed. #litsypartyofone #mrbook1inamillion

For this week‘s #bookreport, I finished Testaments on 🎧 and it ended up a so-so for me. I finished and enjoyed the new Sarah Bailey (an 🇦🇺 author) and am now in the middle of Fleishman and King. I‘ve put Fleishman down for a few days - it‘s just not pulling me in. BUT, all the 🌟 for King‘s writing memoir. Brilliant, funny and just what I need to get my creativity flowing as I finish a rather dull paper for work.

I‘m away with work for a few days, which means lots of time peopling and me generally finding myself #crave (ing) for quiet time with my book (which is very good after a not so sure start). I‘m usually one of the first to leave but I think people do understand - they know I‘m quiet and there are always a few other introverts who will leave when you do. (edited) 1mo
Cathythoughts @Buechersuechtling @JennyM I don‘t have any magic wand excuse ... but there was a time I would have been afraid of drawing attention to myself or of being rude by leaving early .... now I feel stronger in myself & simply say goodnight & thanks! & I don‘t care if I‘m the first to leave anymore. I‘ll only end up wrecked & really stressed if I stay too late 🤷🏼‍♀️hope that‘s helpful ❤️ 1mo
Cathythoughts Re the book , I remember the middle aged men & the porn was annoying at the time. But the rest was so good , I kept on going. And I‘d forgotten all about that side of it till you mentioned it there 1mo
Buechersuechtling @JennyM @Cathythoughts Thanks for reminding me to stand up for my own well being. I think that counts as magic wand. ✨ 1mo

readordierachel Good idea! 1mo
mcctrish @readordierachel today it was actually sunny out ( some of the time) and I didn‘t have to work until the afternoon and I made a point of walking to the school I was teaching at to maximize my sunlight exposure. But on the days it‘s grey and overcast ( most of southern Ontario‘s winter months) I think I‘m going to be glued in front of this light 1mo

A marriage breakdown told mostly from Toby‘s POV (in close third person). Many cultural references & witty observations. Thought-provoking re what makes a marriage work (& the pressure points). A little cynical at times, & I found it presented a woman‘s point of view but flipped it to be a man‘s (making Toby the primary carer of the kids for example) - but that itself raises qs of stereotypes. Loved the energy of the prose. Compulsive reading.

Cathythoughts I really liked it ! Compulsive is the word 1mo

I really enjoyed listening to this one! At first I was like, WTH, it‘s a ton of kinky sex talk from a middle aged dude. It‘s basically about a doctor in his mid-40‘s going through a divorce. There were quirks that bugged me though.
1. The book is told mostly by Toby, also by Rachel as well as Toby‘s friend from college, making things a bit confusing on audio.
2. The book is 384 pages BUT the AUDIO is 14+ hours! That seems really off to me.

Had a lot to say about contemporary dating, ambition, feminism, divorce, and kids. These are not struggling people , they have made it, so to speak, funny at times but begs the question, what if everything you wanted is not really what you wanted.

I heard the author read the first chapter on the NYT Books podcast and knew I would be picking this one up! With a focus on divorce, these are messy characters- different points of view, not everything as it seems.

I went from liking it, to being bored, but I ended up coming back around to like not love. I think this book suffered from the hype and high expectations. I didn‘t find much special about it, but it does have some interesting things say about the way perspective can completely change a story. Of course that isn‘t new, but it did make me see it in a different way.

Okay, so I was having trouble figuring out the narrator of the book. Turns out some/all of part one is written from the perspective of his female best friend from study abroad in college whom he hasn‘t seen in 10 years.

Me: 🤨 wut?

Please tell me this strange decision is explained in part 2!!

Bonus: No chapters! 😒

But I‘m actually still enjoying it and feeling better. 😁 I can read a book now. 👍🏻

Megabooks @Cinfhen I think the main reason I can is that my doctor increased my pain meds. That‘s helped. I‘m sleepier, but I‘m not constantly feeling terrible. I think I‘m going to have surgery right in time because I‘m progressing exactly the same way I did before the last two fusions that I needed. It‘s weird that I‘m excited that 🤞🏻 this time next week I‘ll be recovering in the hospital. I‘m just ready to rock n roll!! 2mo

Megabooks Thank you so much!! 😘🥰😘 I‘ll be back at my parents‘ house in Kentucky by November 9 🤞🏻, which is where you sent Care and Feeding, so that‘s probably the best place to send something. Let me know if you want me to email you the address or if you still have it. 2mo

This book is an experience. Amaaaazing character development of nuanced characters and the narrator, once I figured it out, added a whole depth and purpose to the book. Okay, so there‘s not much “plot”, but you don‘t really miss it. A treatise on marriage and feminism and ambition and child rearing.

Yes. More. Need more.

This book is so interesting. It‘s a well written character-study that pulled me in from the very beginning, and the ending will have me thinking about the three main characters for a long time.

Loved this book! It seems like maybe it‘s about a Jewish doctor in New York going through a divorce, but it‘s actually maybe a feminist manifesto. Cannot recommend enough, especially to anyone who has ever wondered whether they could “have it all” (whatever that even means anymore).

Great book! This explores so many topics - money, ambition, marriage, divorce, gender norms, etc. But ultimately I think this is about women. Despite the title character being male, this book has a lot to say about feminism, the promise of “having it all”, and what marriage and having children does to/for women. The ending seemed to get a little preachy to me, but otherwise this would be a 5⭐️ book. With the ending, 4.5⭐️ #NBAfiction2019

erzascarletbookgasm After such positive reviews from @Cathythoughts and you today, stacking this! 3mo

Redwritinghood @merelybookish @Cathythoughts Maybe it‘s because I sat down and wrote my review as soon as I finished the book, so the ending was still fresh for me. thebluestocking I just finished this and loved it. The ending worked for me, but it did get preachy. I think it‘s interesting that you say the title character is male, as I think the author was playing with the tendency we have to default to the masculine. The last part of the novel is called Rachel Fleishman is in Trouble. Anyway, a very good book. 💙 3w

I loved this ! The main characters - complicated , flawed , real. Set in the privileged big city modern life ... smart writing. An exploration of anxieties, of self doubt, of relationships... of divorce & the fallout for children.
That‘s a pic of the author above too. I listened to an interview with her & found her engaging & insightful & so likable. She says everyone deserves a defence for their behavior .. I agree. She explores the ‘why‘ 5🌟

I‘m almost halfway through and not getting all the love for this one. It‘s disjointed in a way that doesn‘t really work, it‘s written in way that comes across to me as self conscious and not as clever as it thinks it is. Many readers I respect loved it but I‘m close to making this a DNF.

Ruthiella Oh no! I‘ve not read it yet but I have been excited about getting to it. 😮 3mo
Lola @Ruthiella I‘m reading it for a book club that I likely won‘t be able to attend so I thought about skipping it, but decided to go in after it made the National Book Award longlist. It feels gimmicky to me. Even the fact that it‘s on the longlist feels gimmicky (no MW authors on the list but a book *about* a MW (and set in NYC, no less) feels like a staged attempt at irony that I‘m not buying. (edited) 3mo

Lola @Cathythoughts I love real, flawed characters. And I like the story. I just don‘t like the way it‘s being told (just started part two). It feels like the author is trying too hard to be clever and different and for me, at least at this point, she isn‘t pulling it off. 3mo

While it took a while for me to sort out who exactly was voicing this novel & I was also slow catching on to the POV switches, I immediately engaged with the characters. I was reminded at first of Perotta‘s Mrs. Fletcher, then even more strongly of Groff‘s Fates & Furies. Society‘s constraints against being our true selves is made poignant in this novel about marriage & other relationships in middle age life. #Audiobook read by Allyson Ryan.
