Emily Dickinson (1830-1886) was an American poet who wrote an incredible amount of poems. Having lived mostly as a recluse, it was only after her death that Dickinson gained popularity as one of America's greatest poets. This version of Dickinson's Complete Poems includes a table of contents.

Emily Elizabeth Dickinson was an American poet. Little-known during her life, she has since been regarded as one of the most important figures in American poetry. Considered an eccentric by locals, she developed a penchant for white clothing and was known for her reluctance to greet guests or, later in life, even to leave her bedroom. Dickinson never married, and most of her friendships were based entirely upon correspondence.

“Myself was formed—a carpenter—
An unpretending time
My Plane—and I, together wrought
Before a Builder came—

To measure our attainments—
Had we the Art of Boards
Sufficiently developed—He‘d hire us
At Halves—

My Tools took Human—Faces—
The Bench, where we had toiled—
Against the Man—persuaded—
We—Temples build—I said—“

Remembering Emily Dickinson on her birthday.

Dickinson wrote a lot of poems - there are 1775 in this collection. This collection is comprehensive and well organized. Many of her early poems are very girly things about flowers and bees, but you can see her mature as both a person and a poet as you progress through the collection. Like any artist, there is a lot of so-so stuff here, a lot of pretty good, and a few amazing. Overall, 4⭐️

WHO never wanted,—maddest joy
Remains to him unknown;
The banquet of abstemiousness
Surpasses that of wine.

Within its hope, though yet ungrasped 5
Desire‘s perfect goal,
No nearer, lest reality
Should disenthrall thy soul.

muscogulus I like the use of “infiniter,” which would seem obtuse in a lesser poet. 5y

Trust Emily Dickinson to flip the switch, as it were, and describe a #rayoflight as oppressive, "like the heft of cathedral tunes" ?

‘A Shade upon the mind there passes‘

A Shade upon the mind there passes
As when on Noon
A Cloud the mighty Sun encloses
Remembering

That some there be too numb to notice
Oh God
Why give if Thou must take away
The Loved?

(Portrayal of Emily Dickinson by Cynthia Nixon).

”You cannot put a Fire out”

You cannot put a Fire out —
A Thing that can ignite
Can go, itself, without a Fan —
Upon the slowest Night —

You cannot fold a Flood —
And put it in a Drawer —
Because the Winds would find it out —
And tell your Cedar Floor —

By Emily Dickinson.
