From the acclaimed, Man Booker Prize-shortlisted author of All That Man Is, a stunning, virtuosic novel about twelve people, mostly strangers, and the surprising ripple effect each one has on the life of the next as they cross paths while in transit around the world. A woman strikes up a conversation with the man sitting next to her on a plane after some turbulence. He returns home to tragic news that has also impacted another stranger, a shaken pilot on his way to another continent who seeks comfort from a journalist he meets that night. Her life shifts subtly as well, before she heads to the airport on an assignment that will shift more lives in turn. In this wondrous, profoundly moving novel, Szalay's diverse protagonists circumnavigate the planet in twelve flights, from London to Madrid, from Dakar to Sao Paulo, to Toronto, to Delhi, to Doha, en route to see lovers or estranged siblings, aging parents, baby grandchildren, or nobody at all. Along the way, they experience the full range of human emotions from loneliness to love and, knowingly or otherwise, change each other in one brief, electrifying interaction after the next. Written with magic and economy and beautifully exploring the delicate, crisscrossed nature of relationships today, Turbulence is a dazzling portrait of the interconnectedness of the modern world.

I loved rereading these interconnected short stories running from London Gatwick around the world to Senegal, Brazil, Vietnam, #Hungary, and more. #readingeurope2020

And...expect more rereads because things are about to get stressful/good because Dad‘s finally coming home!! It‘s going to be Sept 15 or 17. 💖🎉

So I‘m going to be rewriting my #BookspinBingo list to include more rereads.

Also, I got this cute #booksleeve in the mail! Big day!!

3/5🌟This book was just ok for me. I didn't love it as much as I thought I would but I didn't hate it either. Follows several characters, showing the interconnectedness of people and the mark they can leave on us even if only meeting briefly. The connection used here is through an aiplane which I thought was brilliant! This is a very quick intriguing read, I did wish some of the characters got bigger parts. The writing itself was very good though.

Yes, it‘s snowing in the middle of April in New England 😖
This book was ok. It‘s a collection of short stories in which a character in one story connects to another in the next as they move the reader around the globe. I love that premise, but the stories themselves were a bit lackluster. Having recently read Florida by Lauren Groff, this short story collection couldn‘t hold a candle to hers.

atla Florida was so good 😍 5y

A very fast progressive book about relationships. It begins with a woman getting sick on a plane while sitting next to a man. It then takes you to the man‘s story and then a character from his story, and so on. Very creative and a great read.

Megabooks I loved this too! 5y

Short read on 12 people who lives are connected, in a
“6 degrees of separation” kind of way. Szalay did a great job of writing this from an aerial point of view. My only issue (lately, always the issue) was the ending. It just dropped off, as if it reached the maximum allowed characters or someone ripped the last few pages out 🤷🏾‍♀️
I would still recommend reading based on how the connections were written.

I definitely would have never picked this book up if not for #newyearwhodis

I wasn‘t sure how I was going to feel about this book. It was a short look into a lot of lives and how they were slightly connected. I really liked the way the writer did that. I always get nervous about plane books, but no need to be. All of these people had a lot going on in their lives and you got a sneak peek into everyone‘s mind.

Loved it! I have a thing for interconnected short stories and these were perfect. I can‘t think of a thing I would change about this book! Excellent #jolabokaflodswap choice @Moonprismpower b/c I finished it today. (And ate some of those yummy wc discs!) It also made me think of all the people traveling today. Prayers for safe journeys for any Littens traveling. 5⭐️

PS My total favorite thing, though, is my sea glass worry stone. Perfect!! 💕😘

Moonprismpower So those chocolate discs have a name !!!! They are called nonpareils. I‘ve loved them since I was a kid. Basically it‘s a snowcap like you‘d get at the movie theater but I love the word nonpareil more. Glad you enjoyed the book! I just read A Christmas Carol! Happy Christmas! 5y
Megabooks @Moonprismpower Aaahh, yes! I remember hearing nonpareils some time in my life now. I always think of Patrick Stewart with A Christmas Carol. Happy Christmas and thank you!! (edited) 5y

Omg, thank you so much @Moonprismpower !!! You are the BEST! What a wonderful #jolabokaflodswap package. Not only did she get me really yummy (white chocolate!) candy, but also some sea glass, which I immediately purposed into a worry stone. Love those!

She picked up the tagged from her local indie! 👍🏻🎉The other two were donated to the library where she works and are basically new, and I am so happy and spoiled to have all three! Thanks Court!

Megabooks Also, check out the beautiful Edward Gorey bookmark. Friend, you went above and beyond! (And I was just watching ST:VOY the other day! For some reason I‘m stuck on season 3. 🤷🏻‍♀️) 5y

This book is a great short read. It‘s like a movie and the reader is the voyeur who gets to jump into a d out of several entwined stories all based on people coming and going from flights. The characters are great and the stories are just interesting and short enough to hook you before you jump into another.

BarbaraBB Loved this one 💕 5y

A month of challenge reads, some lovely cookbooks and a fabulous reread, on audio (Daisy Jones)
My favorite fiction was Turbulence.. a beautifully written collection of linked vignettes that really spoke to me.
The Art of escapism cooking is a gorgeous memoir/cookbook - my favorite combo!
I realized that space stuff (Descender for #pop19) is not for me, and I‘m just #meh about YA fantasy (Blood and Bone for #booked2019) 🤷‍♀️

Shining softly and strung together like pearls, twelve brief, interlinked stories connect readers with people across the globe. Clever and humane. #Audiobook narrated by Gabra Zackman.

Each chapter is a separate story but you can see the links between them by looking at the airport codes, starting with LGW–MAD (Gatwick to Madrid) and ending back at Gatwick via Budapest. You can also see how brief this audiobook is: only 2.5 hours long.

This slim book is a collection of linked short stories all somehow related to airline travel. Each story takes its main character from the prior story and follows that person forward, handing the baton through to the end, when we come back around to the beginning. I enjoyed it, though I don‘t think I found it as profound as did the NYT book review podcast.

Based on @Cinfhen ‘s review I bought this one and she was right, it is very good! Losely connected stories, all based on people travelling by plane to go home, visit friends, family, escape the turbulence of their own life etc.
Just like in Szalay‘s other book, All That Man Is, his characters and plots are so interesting that I would like to read (much) more about all of them.

Cinfhen It really needed to be longer!!!! I loved this book but it left me wanting more. Did it storm by you today???? How many books did you read on your trip??? How many new books are you bringing back??? 5y
Kalalalatja Looks lovely! 5y
BarbaraBB @Cinfhen we had a beautiful day but I think the storm is approaching now. I‘ll send you a copy of All that Man is when I‘m home, it is just as good as this one and longer! I just started my 17th book 😊 and bought 12... 🙈. We also bought an extra suitcase because my kids bought sneakers and stuff like that. How about you? Did Niki bring tons of book that had been waiting for you in her apartment 🤣?! (edited) 5y
Cinfhen My stack of books is ridiculous 😜hubby is already having fits and I still have another 3 weeks left!!!! I‘d love to read All That Man Is xx thank you 😘have you posted your haul? I‘ll have to go back and see what you bought!!! I know you went to Strand 🙌🏻❤️ what an amazing trip you planned!!! I‘m sure kids had a blast. Zach ALWAYS brings back sneakers!! It‘s always our first (and last) stop😁 5y

#LilithJuly This slim little volume of interconnected stories all revolve around airplane travel. Each chapter is headed by airport destinations and the stories start and end at the previous destination. I was hooked from the very first “flight “ and delighted with each encounter.
