In 1847 Edinburgh, Will Raven, apprentice to Professor of Midwifery James Young Simpson, and housemaid Sarah Fisher look into the death of a friend of Will's and a friend of Sarah's both written off as suicide.

The mystery was a bit predictable at times but the historical background was very well done. The professor was a real person, and his discovery of chloroform as an anaesthetic is one of the events in the book.

Set in nineteenth century Edinburgh, this mystery was an entertaining read. Many of the primary characters are physicians that are seeking a better alternative to ether anesthesia for medical procedures. Throw in a famous gynecologist, a young apprentice doctor who owes money to gangsters, and a young housemaid who longs for a role in the medical profession and you have the makings of a good story. Good twist reveal at the end.

I had high hopes for this first book of three. The plot itself is ok, although it is easy to work out who the culprit is, but the narrative suffers from very slow pacing, whilst Raven & Sarah have the sexual chemistry of two planks of wood. There was no emotional depth at all to the scenes where they supposedly discover their attraction to each other & I didn't feel invested in their relationship at all. 2.5⭐

It was a nice mystery read. The way they intertwine the mystery with the medical stuff, humor, and a Lil bit of romance was nice. I work in the medical field so I picked up the doctors being sassy to each other hilarious 😂. The only thing that makes me curious is that I wanted to see what happened next but it calmed me enough for me to sleep. (I have problems sleeping).
It's the beginning of the trilogy soo I'm curious how they will continue it.

charl08 It's a great series, hope you can find the others too. 3y

Great historical mystery centered around medicine and social order in Edinburgh Scotland. I suspected the culprit, but still enjoyed the mystery and cast of characters. Thank you @Mitch for a great recommendation ❤️

It‘s an entertaining novel. It‘s not particularly groundbreaking or deep with it‘s narrative but it reminds you how fortunate we are to live in this age instead of in past eras.

So good!

I recommend the #audiobook.

Thank you @Mitch for putting this book/series on my radar.

I liked the mystery, and all the medical 'stuff'. Fisher and Raven make a good pair of detectives. I wonder, though, having read "The Butchering Art" (tagged ⬇️), if the next books in the series might include disinfectants. I admit I cringed when one doctor let his instrument fall and then just picked it off the floor to continue his work.

Crazeedi I read ⬆️ and now I have to find the rest 3y

Crime novels aren‘t usually my thing, I got this recommendation from @Minimalgrl and I really enjoyed it! I‘m on to the second novel now and while the Raven character is obnoxious in many ways he also seems very sexy in my mind (helped out by narrator Bryan Dick whose Scottish voice is just 100% hot) so basically I am continuing the trilogy because I have a lusty crush on the main character 😂

This is the first in the series. Im not sure if it's because I listened to the audio version, but it didn't hold my attention at times. I found myself missing parts and I had to rewind several times to hear it again. That isn't normal for me. It was okay. ⭐⭐⭐

I won't give up on the series just yet. Hoping the others make up for this one. I may try reading the next vs listening to it.

A solid Victorian mystery. It has some nice hints of nostalgia for fog strewn cobbles and Hanson cabs charging through the night. Mixes real characters from medical history with some above and below stairs characters. The red herrings were a little too obvious and the ending a little quite predictable. But a good comfort read and I‘m going to continue reading the series

Crazeedi Hmmm medical stuff interspersed? Sounds like one I'd like 4y
Mitch @Crazeedi yes - it‘s all about the discovery and art of anaesthesia - particularly to help in childbirth 4y

Solid mystery set in Victorian Scotland. Although I think the writing could be cleaner, I like the characters enough to read the next one in the series. Beware, though: This novel is about obstetrics and midwifery in a Victorian slum. So...plenty of horrifying medical scenes.

(Quarantine book #48; read a historical fiction/mystery.)

I googled Scottish Noir and was presented this book. I would never have known I liked this genre if not for #Booked2020 challenge. I read a bit about the husband/wife author team before reading and she is an anesthesiologist in her spare time :) Knowing this made me appreciate the both the medical emphasis in this whodunit and the creative manner in which this this learned woman to presented medical midwifery and an aesthetic history.

Cinfhen Sounds really good😁 5y
marleed @Cinfhen I‘m sure I would have liked this book had I not known the profession of the wife making up 1/2 of Ambrose Parry, but perhaps my squimish self would have read past the medical descriptions. But instead I was drawn in to her way of providing this info. I tell you what, Mother‘s Day means more when I think about what the women in our ancestry went through to get us here. 5y

Highly enjoyed this historical murder mystery, especially after reading that of the two authors, one studied medical history and the premise was based on face. In Edinburgh, a “man midwife” studies with a famous doctor and realizes that someone in town is murdering pregnant women, usually prostitutes. I‘m excited for the next book! Otis is too, although you can‘t tell it. #dogsoflitsy

Hello dearest littens! I feel like its been forever since I've checked Litsy. Recovering from the flu and a fall on the stairs, so I've done very little the last 5 days or so (even reading).
I'm on the last chapter of this book and have some mixed feelings. I've seen the conclusion coming for awhile, and I can't decide if I like the main characters or not. I love the setting though and the writing itself is fairly good. 🤷

1847 Edinburgh and a young medical apprentice Raven joins the home of renowned obstetrician dr simpson. Raven and housemaid Sarah are drawn into investigating deaths of young women in or around childbirth and abortions.
A really good read combining medical history (surgery in lecture theatres, development of medical skills, obstetrics & anaesthesia) with a rattling good plot and characters. Hopefully there will be a sequel. Perfect boxing day rd.

Murder! 1847! Edinburgh! Mysterious doctor-types being hella mysterious! Badass housemaids knowing medical things that educated doctors don't! Did I mention 1847 Edinburgh?! My history-loving heart beats for this. Yes, the main characters were annoying as /heck/ for the first half-ish, but as soon as they were forced to grow up and be responsible adults it was all well and dandy. Except for all the murder. Gosh, this was such a delight.
