Belgariad (Vol 1): Volume One: Pawn of Prophecy, Queen of Sorcery, Magician's Gambit (Trade)
Belgariad (Vol 1): Volume One: Pawn of Prophecy, Queen of Sorcery, Magician's Gambit (Trade) | David Eddings
21 posts | 40 read | 17 to read
Millions of readers have discovered the magic of David Eddings' "New""York Times" bestselling series "The Belgariad." Now the first three books in this monumental epic appear in a single volume. Here, long-time fans can rediscover the wonder--and the uninitiated can embark upon a thrilling new journey of fantasy and adventure. It all begins with the theft of the Orb that for so long protected the West from an evil god. As long as the Orb was at Riva, the prophecy went, its people would be safe from this corrupting power. Garion, a simple farm boy, is familiar with the legend of the Orb, but skeptical in matters of magic. Until, through a twist of fate, he learns not only that the story of the Orb is true, but that he must set out on a quest of unparalleled magic and danger to help recover it. For Garion is a child of destiny, and fate itself is leading him far from his home, sweeping him irrevocably toward a distant tower--and a cataclysmic confrontation with a master of the darkest magic.

Thanks for the tag @inthegreensandblues

Yes, I have quite a few books I read and reread including the tagged series. I originally read it at age 12, so over the past 30+ years, I‘ve read it innumerable times.

My other fave rereads include HHGTTG, Pride & Prejudice, books by Neil Gaiman, Patricia Briggs, Lisa Kleypas, Mary Oliver . . .

#littenswanttoknow

BarkingMadRead I‘ve read the Stand by Stephen King at least 20 times, and I‘ve read Little Women and also Pride and Prejudice at least 5 times each 2y

I have reread this series so many times that my copies are pretty worn out, so when I saw THE ENTIRE series at my local thrift store for $.99 each, I couldn‘t pass it up!! They weren‘t all together so it was a fun little scavenger hunt 😄 Now I can spread the joy of this series to some friends by letting them borrow my older copies without worrying if I get them back or not! 🤪😂
I also can‘t believe how good the condition of these copies were!!

#BFCr3 book 1/6 is done, and with it I finished this series! Fluffy, predictable high fantasy. Good for my mood the last couple days. I spectacularly failed at the no caffeine/sugar goal yesterday because I was having a rough go at it. Better today...still have a headache though. 😥 I'm sure it'll go away soon though! #HSreadathon

bromeliad @Suet624 yeah, not looking forward to this, but if I can make it the full six weeks without caving, I should have kicked the habits pretty well! 5y
Tineke @bromeliad I thought so too. Great, then my first day has ended already😂 10pm here. 5y
Megabooks @Tineke Weeks run Sunday to Saturday. @bromeliad I‘ve cut down to one sugary drink, so kudos to you for cutting out sugar and caffeine!!! 🙌🏻🙌🏻 Someone would have to pry my unsweetened tea out of my hands!! 🤣 5y
bromeliad @Tineke Aah, I hope that doesn't set you too far back! and @Megabooks thanks, and kudos to YOU for cutting back!! 👏 I'm not disciplined enough to cut back--that only lasts like two days and then I'm back to where I started 😩 5y

Borderline pick the nostalgia of a childhood favorite has worn off under some of the misogynistic representations of some female characters.

Centique I know what you mean. I loved this so much as a teenager but I reread the first one last year and the female representations got to me as well. Such a shame 😔 6y

So happy this childhood favorite has held up. Epic fantasy novel of gods, men and sorcerers on a journey (of course) where a battles will be fought to save the world from evil. And for a book from the 80s there's a great strong female protagonist - Polgara, one of my favorite characters ever.

3 books in one volume and I'm on to volume 2

wanderinglynn This is one of my favorite series & what introduced me to epic fantasy when I was a child. 6y
mreads @wanderinglynn it's so great rereading and I'm looking forward to pulling it out in 5 years and reading it again. 6y

Went shopping at a new used bookstore near me for a swap and of course found nothing for the swap but was taken back to my (ahem dating myself) childhood with these two volumes. I loved this fantasy series, there are actually 10 books in all, only 5 here so I'll have to search out the other 5. I hope it even a little bit lives up to my memories.

It sucks to be the chosen one. No, honestly! It‘s a common trope particularly in fantasy. Text above from https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/ItSucksToBeTheChosenOne
Garion from The Belgariad is one of my favourite characters who regularly bemoans #whydidithavetobeme

I've always thought The Belgariad would make a great TV series. David Eddings was very vocal about his not wanting his books to be made into movies/on screen, which I respect, but was always a bit bummed by it as it would be great to see some of my favourite books on screen.

#maybookflowers #war : when I think of war in books, I think back to my dad reading me the Belgariad when I was a little kid. This was post-Hobbit & pre-Harry Potter in my fantasy education, and it remains one of my favorite series ever.
Also, recently reread via audible: very hard to do when the guy pronounces all the made up words differently. It was a struggle.

omie Seriously, I also had to bail on the audio book with all the pronunciations being completely funky, and not matching how i've pronounced things for decades. 😂 5y
