Minding Frankie | Maeve Binchy
70 posts | 37 read | 12 to read
Maeve Binchy is back with a tale of joy, heartbreak and hope, about a motherless girl collectively raised by a close-knit Dublin community. When Noel learns that his terminally ill former flame is pregnant with his child, he agrees to take guardianship of the baby girl once shes born. But as a single father battling demons of his own, Noel cant do it alone. Fortunately, he has a competent, caring network of friends, family and neighbors: Lisa, his unlucky-in-love classmate, who moves in with him to help him care for little Frankie around the clock; his American cousin, Emily, always there with a pep talk; the newly retired Dr. Hat, with more time on his hands than he knows what to do with; Dr. Declan and Fiona and their baby son, Frankies first friend; and many eager babysitters, including old friends Signora and Aidan and Frankies doting grandparents, Josie and Charles. But not everyone is pleased with the unconventional arrangement, especially a nosy social worker, Moira, who is convinced that Frankie would be better off in a foster home. Now its up to Noel to persuade her that everyone in town has something special to offer when it comes to minding Frankie.

This is classic Binchy, and if you‘re a fan, then I think you‘ll like this novel. A small community in Ireland rallies together to care for a baby. Many of Binchy‘s characters from other novels make appearances. Binchy quickly moves from one character to another in this book, which may add a sense of community to the novel, but also makes it feel more like a series of linked short stories. It is a warm and generally feel good book. ⭐️⭐️⭐️.5 / 5

My #doublespin for May is up next! I love Maeve Binchy, yet this has sat on my shelf forever. It‘s a gorgeous edition with end papers that match the cover and deckle edged pages, and the title on the cover is on foil (which doesn‘t show in the photo I took). ❤️📚

Noel is an alcoholic with no goals or dreams. Then terminally ill Stella tells him he‘s about to be a dad. This is a feel good book about the families we‘re born into and those we create ourselves. #ReadingEurope2020

This was another fun and entertaining read from Maeve Binchy. It was another visit to so many wonderful characters from her other novels. Her books are a brief glimpse into the characters‘ lives as in real life we only know surface information of people we meet. This book is timeless and a classic that transcends time. I love her books and look forward to reading another. Read as a Buddy Read.

Andrew65 Will miss her characters. Great review. (edited) 5y

Final Discussion

Question 6 of 6

EadieB I loved the book and all of the other books she wrote. I feel enriched by her writing and I am glad we read them all. I have a few other books that she wrote so I will be reading them also. 5y
ljuliel I really enjoyed the book. I liked the mix of characters and the storyline with Frankie . It was very good. 5y
cobwebmoth I enjoyed the book. I found this one to be very emotional. I'll definitely have to go back and read the books of hers that I missed. 5y
CoffeeNBooks I really liked this book! I'm looking forward to reading more of Maeve Binchy's books. 5y
Tove_Reads I felt like something was missing from the good old books of hers. Yes, great characters and all that, but I felt like she didn‘t let the reader know everything the reader should have known. 5y

Final Discussion

Question 5 of 6

EadieB I don't think he should do a DNA test as he was chosen to be Frankie's father. I think Noel would still want to be in Frankie's life as the father even if the results came back that he was not the father. 5y
cobwebmoth I didn't think he should have the test done. He was Frankie's father because he was the one that loved and took care of her. 5y
CoffeeNBooks I don't think he should have done the test, but it seems like he wanted to know for sure that Frankie was his biological child. Maybe Moira's comment made him feel like she could take Frankie away more easily if he wasn't her biological parent. 5y
ljuliel Whoops. I missed a question. Just now saw it. I agree with Harper that he probably was just curious as to what it‘d say , but it wouldn‘t change his mind about wanting Frankie. 5y

Question 4 of 6

EadieB I really do not think that was Moira's place to question his fatherhood as Frankie's mom chose him as the father in order to take care of Frankie. 5y
ljuliel I wasn‘t much surprised. She always seemed to want to cause problems or dig up dirt on people. 5y
cobwebmoth It really irritated me that she made those comments. I wish she knew when to just be quiet. 5y

Question 3 of 6

EadieB I am not a big fan of Anton so I think he is getting what he deserves and it would be nice if Lisa could put a claim in as she helped him so much with his business. 5y
ljuliel I didn‘t like him throughout the book, so it was fine by me if he had difficulties . He got what he dished out. 5y
ljuliel And yes, Lisa helped him a lot, so he owed her something for all her time. 5y
cobwebmoth I think Anton got what was coming to him. Lisa deserved to be paid, but I understand her wanting to just get away from the situation. 5y
CoffeeNBooks I think Anton used Lisa, and was probably doing the same to April. It doesn't surprise me that he wasn't making money at his restaurant. He should have listened to Lisa more and April less. I'm surprised that Lisa didn't put in a claim, but I think she just wanted to be completely done with Anton. 5y

Question 2 of 6

EadieB I didn't really see the marriage between Hat and Emily but I do think it is the right decision for Emily as she is always doing everything for others to make them happy and now I feel like Emily will finally be happy too. 5y
ljuliel Yes, I sorta thought Emily would find someone and not be single forever. Then when they started dining together, etc, I thought it‘d end in romance. 5y
cobwebmoth I didn't expect this match, but I think they make a nice couple. 5y
CoffeeNBooks I didn't expect it, but it makes sense and I think they'll be happy. 5y

This was the last novel Maeve Binchy wrote before her untimely death, and this made the book far more poignant, especially one chapter in the book. This book was a total rollercoaster of emotions, and resulted in 😢😭 on more than one occasion. So wonderfully written by a truly gifted story writer. I have now read all her novels and will miss Maeve‘s world. This, and all her books, strongly recommended!

#24B42020 20 hrs 45 minutes accumulated.

Leftcoastzen Wow , I remember when you started reading her , great job ! 5y
ljuliel Well, Andrew, the good thing about Maeve is, if you miss her and her magical world, all you have to do is open a book. She wrote several chunksters, so you can visit her many times. I need to look up the article I saw about her the other day. It was quite a tribute. I‘ll tag you when I find it. 5y
rubyslippersreads @ljuliel I‘m glad she left so many books. @andrew65 Thanks for hosting all the group reads (even though I‘ve missed some of them) and letting us immerse ourselves in Maeve‘s world. 5y

Discussion of Chapter 10 - 12

Question 6 of 6

ljuliel Yes ... I wish he would‘ve gotten a bigger role in her books. He seemed such a likable fellow. 5y
Andrew65 Wow! What a Chapter, so well written had me. 😢😭😭 He does have a bigger role in Scarlet Feather if you haven‘t read it @Ljuliel . This was published the year Maeve died so I did wonder if she knew she was dying when she wrote this. If so even braver to write this chapter. (edited) 5y
EadieB Yes Maeve did a great job handling Muttie's death. Amazing if she knew she was dying at the time she wrote this. 5y
See All 9 Comments
CoffeeNBooks Poor Muttie. That was so sad. @Andrew65 I put Scarlet Feather on my TBR list, and now I want to read it sooner than later! 5y
Andrew65 @CoffeeNBooks It is a good one, you learn more about the twins and their past in that book too. 5y
cobwebmoth Yes, but it was so sad.😢 Muttie was so likable. 5y
ljuliel I‘ve started Scarlet Feather but it was a bit challenging to get into the story. I‘m not much interested in cooking and running a restaurant , so it sorta bogged me down. I‘ll have to push past that to get to the other stories, as all of Maeve‘s books have. 5y
Andrew65 @ljuliel Hope you enjoy the rest of it. 5y

EadieB I couldn't image who Frankie was with either. Vey scary! 5y
CoffeeNBooks I thought there must have been some sort of miscommunication, but I didn't know what could have happened to her. 5y

Question 4 of 6

ljuliel Not really. She seems to have a bit of a problem removing her job from people‘s personal private lives. I think she‘d be more effective if she could separate the 2 , and judge the cases by how she can professionally help. 5y
CoffeeNBooks I think maybe she should find someone else to take his case if she feels too personally involved. 5y
cobwebmoth I don't think she should feel guilty. He made his own choices that led him to this point. 5y

ljuliel Hhhmmmm........well, I‘m not sure if it‘s always possible to do that. Sometimes Life and events that happen to you sorta program you to think a certain way. 5y
EadieB I think Liza needs to find another love interest instead of Anton. 5y
CoffeeNBooks @EadieB I agree! I think she needs to focus on more positive people in her life, and move on from helping Anton so much. It seems like she'd be happier if she didn't have to deal with April, also. 5y

Question 1 of 6

ljuliel Well, the thought did cross my mind that I wonder how all these folks functioned before she came to visit ! I don‘t think she minded. I think she liked helping out and giving advice. 5y
EadieB No I think Emily is the type of person who enjoys helping others whenever she can. 5y
CoffeeNBooks I think Emily welcomed the opportunity to help out. I think they rely on her for a lot, but she's helped them form a network so they can rely on each other in her absence. 5y

Discussion of Chapter 7 - 9

Question 6 of 6

ljuliel No, I think they‘re aware she‘s got some issues. 5y
CoffeeNBooks I think both yes and no. I think they know how Moira is, but I also think that each one gave Moira some information that she didn't already have. She can choose to make something of that or not. I'm hoping Moira will change her ways and let up on Noel a bit. Especially after her evening out with Lisa- maybe they'll become friends and Moira can become a little more human. 5y
EadieB I think that if Moira does become friends with Lisa that will be a good thing and may be able to help Moira settle into her position better. 5y
cobwebmoth I think they both gave her too much information. I hope Moira doesn't keep trying to take Frankie away from Noel, but I'm not holding my breath. 5y

Discussion of Chapter 7 - 9

Question 5 of 6

ljuliel She‘s difficult and annoying. You find out why she was like that later in the book. I think she needs a different job. 5y
CoffeeNBooks I think she's a damaged and lonely person, and I think she's toxic to those around her. I'm hoping that spending time with Lisa might change that a bit. I have hope that she'll become a better person in the future. 5y
Tove_Reads Her family background is weird, but it‘s not a reason to treat others like that. She‘s a person I would simply avoid as much as possible in my own life. I probably could too, since she could only be close to me as a neighbor. I doubt I would otherwise run into her 😃 5y
EadieB Once we learned of Moira's background it is easy to understand why she acts the way she does. I think she needs a different job too because she is not being fair to the people she is monitoring. 5y
cobwebmoth She's so bitter about her past that she has no ability to be objective in the present. 5y

Question 4 of 6

ljuliel Sorry. Drawing a blank on this. I‘m half reading, half listening. No answer for this one. 5y
CoffeeNBooks Again, I think Des misunderstood Frank taking so long to contact him. Add to that what Des' aunt told him, and I can completely understand why he initially acted the way he did toward Frank. He doesn't know Frank, and has no reason to think he didn't have a part in how his family treated Rita. 5y
ljuliel Thanks @coffeenbooks. I just now remembered who he was. He played such a tiny part in the book so far, I forgot about him. I think he has every right to have resentment. Growing up without the correct information about the situation, he was probably pretty angry. 5y
See All 6 Comments
Tove_Reads What is the right way to act, and what is the right attitude? I‘m sure most people are defensive in a situation like this. I hate it when people keep things like this from others, or lies. He totally had the right to know his father when he was growing up. I guess once he found out and he‘s processed everything his resentment will turn from daddy to others. 5y
EadieB Des should have been told sooner who his dad was but I'm sure that Frank understands the situation and why he was not told sooner. 5y
cobwebmoth I thought Des should have given Frank a chance to explain his side of things before getting mad at him. I thought Frank handled things as well as he could. 5y

Question 3 of 6

ljuliel I already read past this, so I can‘t say much, except I think he made a good decision. 5y
CoffeeNBooks I think he shouldn't have waited so long to contact his son, but I understand that it's his personality to think things through before doing anything. Unfortunately, his son thought that meant he wasn't interested. 5y
Tove_Reads Don‘t know what the right reaction and timespan to something like this is. Since the son is already a grown up you know it‘s too late to be that kind of a father, but the shock of it all might take very different time periods for people to think it over. 5y
EadieB I think Frank should have acknowledged his son's letter sooner and answered him sooner but it was a bit shocking and he had to get used to the news. 5y
cobwebmoth I think for Frank his reaction and the time he took were reasonable. 5y

Question 2 of 6

ljuliel I liked it. He probably took a lower paying position, but I think he was happier to stay where they are. 5y
CoffeeNBooks I think he probably made the right decision- he and his wife have family and friends where they are, and although the new position would be prestigious, it might not be worth leaving everyone behind and no longer have their support system close by. 5y
Tove_Reads Hard to say. I think he might regret it one day, but since you can only choose one option, the other option will probably haunt in the back of you head at times. 5y
EadieB It probably was the right thing as they have family and friends close by and moving away from that would be hard for his wife. 5y
cobwebmoth I think Declan and Fiona will be happy to keep their family and support system nearby. 5y

ljuliel I‘m hoping it was just a temporary slip and won‘t become a routine thing again. 5y
EadieB I think that it is a temporary slip but someone needs to tell Moira to back off. 5y
See All 6 Comments
Tove_Reads I think he‘ll realize it was a big mistake and will try to make up for it. 5y
Andrew65 Hopefully is a temporary slip but am sure Moira will be back the next day and that is very worrying as she will see that he has succumbed. Think the others will have to work hard to cover for him. Without Moira this wouldn‘t have happened. @ljuliel @CoffeeNBooks @EadieB @Tove_Reads 5y
cobwebmoth I agree. 5y

Discussion of Chapter 4 - 6

Question 5 of 6

ljuliel Yes I think he‘s doing great. Moira is really annoying. Trying too hard to butt in when it‘s not necessary. 5y
CoffeeNBooks I think he's doing great. I don't think Noel would have gone to the pub for drinks if Moira hadn't given him such a hard time. She seems to be working against him and causing him extra unnecessary stress by looking for things to bother him about. 5y
EadieB I think Noel is doing a great job too and with Lisa's help it can only get better. I agree about Moira causing too much stress for Noel and she does need to back off. 5y
See All 6 Comments
Tove_Reads He is, but too much is too much. I believe in changing everything at once, but only if a person is balanced, which he is not. It takes a long time to recover. 5y
Andrew65 He is doing a great job, supported by those around him. Moira is very annoying and is starting to cause problems which could lead to Frankie going into care, and the data is terrible for children that go into care. Surely there are more important cases she should be focusing on rather than pandering to her own bias. @ljuliel @CoffeeNBooks @EadieB @Tove_Reads 5y
cobwebmoth I think Noel is doing very well considering everything. I really don't like Moira. 5y

Question 4 of 6

ljuliel I guess so....it seems to be working out so far, and she‘s a big help with everything. 5y
CoffeeNBooks I think it makes sense- Lisa needed a place to live, she seems to be happy helping Noel, and Noel really needed someone other than his parents to relate to. 5y
EadieB I think Lisa moving in with Noel is a good thing for all as Noel needs help and Lisa needs a place to stay. A win-win situation! 5y
See All 6 Comments
Tove_Reads In the long run no, but for right now yes. 5y
Andrew65 That was an interesting development. It does seem to suit them both and they are both getting something from it. I wonder what will happen long-term. @ljuliel @CoffeeNBooks @eadieb @tove_reads 5y
cobwebmoth At first I thought it was a little odd, but it seems to be working for now. 5y

Question 3 of 6

ljuliel They sound as if they were never well matched and should have split up long ago. Yes, he should have sat down with his daughter to talk about what happened , but it doesn‘t sound like any of them are good at communicating. 5y
CoffeeNBooks That was so strange, but then the way that the family is portrayed as being so noncommunicative seems odd. Lisa's mom's response when Lisa's dad told her was so bizarre. 5y
EadieB Lisa's parents are definitely a bit odd. Her father should have talked to her after The Incident but then I don't think he knows much about communicating. 5y

Tove_Reads A “good auld” Irish couple, forced to marry back in the days. Sad. 5y
Andrew65 Very sad all round. Is that really how you want to live your life! 🤯 Fancy not even talking about it and letting her move out without even having talked about it. She is better well away from them! Lisa‘s mother is as bad as her dad, has she got no self- respect? @ljuliel @CoffeeNBooks @EadieB @Tove_Reads 5y
cobwebmoth Her parents are so cold. I don't understand living your life with that kind of detachment. 5y

Question 2 of 6

ljuliel I‘d like her to end up with Noel, but they don‘t sound like they have that sort of relationship. 5y
CoffeeNBooks @ljuliel I agree- I think she and Noel would be good for each other. 5y
EadieB I would like to see her end up with Noel and they would be a better match. 5y
See All 6 Comments
Tove_Reads Noel, but I think she could and should find a third man that would be right for her 5y
Andrew65 Whilst Lisa is focused on Anton nothing will develop with Noel things could change of she kicks Anton into touch. @ljuliel @CoffeeNBooks @EadieB @Tove_Reads 5y
cobwebmoth Noel would definitely be better than Anton, but they just seem more like pals at this point. 5y

Question 1 of 6

ljuliel He doesn‘t sound like a very likable character. Too fake. Sorta like a used car salesman who runs a restaurant. Also he sounds like a womanizer. 5y
CoffeeNBooks I don't like him at all. He doesn't want Lisa around when it's not convenient for him, but he expects her to be there when he wants her there. 5y
EadieB I don't get good feelings about Anton either. He's nothing but a heartbreaker. 5y
See All 6 Comments
Tove_Reads Douchbag. Only interest in me, myself and I. 5y
Andrew65 I agree with you all, a very unlikable character and a user! She needs to distance herself from him. @ljuliel @CoffeeNBooks @EadieB @Tove_Reads 5y
cobwebmoth I agree. Anton is awful. 5y

Question 6 of 6

CoffeeNBooks I'm really enjoying this book so far, and enjoying catching up with some of the characters from Quentins. 5y
Andrew65 @CoffeeNBooks Maeve Binchy has such an easy writing style, which makes the book very enjoyable to read - almost reads itself. I agree good to see characters from other books put in an appearance. 5y
EadieB I‘m glad we are getting more information on some of the characters that we have met before. 5y
See All 11 Comments
CoffeeNBooks @Andrew65 I'm definitely going to read more of her books! Quentins is the only one I've read. 5y
Andrew65 @CoffeeNBooks I‘d definitely recommend them. Amongst my favourites would be Heart and Soul, Nights of Rain and Stars, Scarlet Feather. 5y
ljuliel I like it very much. Recognizing a lot of the same names as many of her other books. They all tie in together 5y
Tove_Reads Happy that it‘s not one of those ‘novels‘ which is not really a novel, but short stories. 5y
Andrew65 @Tove_Reads I agree. 5y
cobwebmoth I'm enjoying it so far. 5y
TheBookHippie I‘m loving the flow. I always feel I‘m sitting with a friend over hot tea and listening to a good yarn 5y
Andrew65 @TheBookHippie Always the ultimate cosy read! 5y

Question 5 of 6

CoffeeNBooks I think so- and I think Emily will help him out and be supportive of him. 5y
Andrew65 @CoffeeNBooks Yes I do think he will be, and especially if Emily is around to support him. 5y
EadieB Yes I think Noel will be a terrific dad and it will be great if Emily would support him too. 5y
See All 7 Comments
ljuliel I think he‘d try really hard but it‘d be a stressful position for anyone to be in when they barely knew each other, then to be responsible for all this on his own. 5y
Tove_Reads He might grow in to one. 5y
cobwebmoth I hope he can be a good father. I think it will take courage for him to be honest about his struggles. 5y
TheBookHippie I think so. Support however -will be necessary for sure. 5y

Question 4 of 6

CoffeeNBooks I was surprised that Stella turned him down when he asked. I can't quite figure out why she did that. 5y
Andrew65 I think they should have done, especially in Ireland, to give the baby legitimacy. 5y
EadieB I think it would be best for the baby‘s sake for them to get married. 5y
See All 7 Comments
ljuliel That would be a nice gesture , if only for a very short amount of time. 5y
Tove_Reads Absolutely not. No point. 5y

Question 3 of 6

CoffeeNBooks I thought he would change his mind at some point, I just wasn't sure what would make him change his mind. 5y
Andrew65 I was certain he would change his position and stand up and look after the baby. @CoffeeNBooks 5y
EadieB At first he was in denial but I thought he would come around and take care of the baby. 5y

ljuliel I think he should have agreed to help her out in any way possible. I didn‘t think he‘d help at all. (edited) 5y
Tove_Reads I guess you grow up really fast in a situation like this. Not everyone, but the shock he must have gotten when he heard the news must have been massive! 5y
Andrew65 @ljuliel I always thought he‘d come round. 5y
Andrew65 @Tove_Reads You can understand him running out initially with the shock! 5y
cobwebmoth I thought he should have been kinder in listening to Stella. I was afraid he wouldn't be able to leave the alcohol behind. 5y

Question 2 of 6

CoffeeNBooks I'm not sure- he seemed so insistent that it couldn't be his baby. 5y
Andrew65 @CoffeeNBooks Something tells me he wasn‘t the father but could be wrong on this. 5y
EadieB It could be his baby but like Andrew I am a bit skeptical. 5y
See All 9 Comments
ljuliel Yes . She could‘ve probably tried lying to someone else better situated in life if she were trying to get someone else to take part in it. 5y
Tove_Reads Well, how bad would the real father be if she chose him as “the best choice”? 🤔 5y
Andrew65 @Tove_Reads @ljuliel I still think he may not be the baby‘s father. 5y
cobwebmoth I don't know, but I wouldn't have chosen Noel for looking after a baby. 5y
TheBookHippie I am always skeptical in this situation but something‘s saying he‘s not 🤷🏽‍♀️ 5y
Andrew65 @TheBookHippie My thoughts too. 5y
