Smith of Wootton Major & Farmer Giles of Ham
Smith of Wootton Major & Farmer Giles of Ham | J R R Tolkien
11 posts | 14 read | 5 to read
Two bewitching fantasies by J.R.R. Tolkien, beloved author of THE HOBBIT. In SMITH OF WOOTTON MAJOR, Tolkien explores the gift of fantasy, and what it means to the life and character of the man who receives it. And FARMER GILES OF HAM tells a delightfully ribald mock-heroic tale, where a dragon who invades a town refuses to fight, and a farmer is chosen to slay him.

Today‘s word is one more from “Farmer Giles of Ham.”

pantechnicon: (noun) a large van for transporting furniture

That‘s a pretty specific word and an interesting visual comparison.

Pickpick

I finished Smith of Wootton Major and this little book this morning. I enjoyed all of the illustrations, although I thought the ones in Farmer Giles of Ham were better than this story. This one is a bit more bittersweet, but still a great story of Faery. Tolkien‘s short stories will never rank with his stories of Middle-Earth, but I do love seeing the variety.

Daisey One more note: I‘ll be working on a schedule for The Silmarillion to start February 18. 3mo

AnnR Hi @Daisey. Could you please remove me from the tag list. Thank you. 🙂 (edited) 3mo
TheAromaofBooks I had never read Smith before and quite enjoyed it. 3mo
BarbaraJean I thought I had read more of the stories in Tales from the Perilous Realm, but I don't remember reading either of these! Tom Bombadil and Roverandom are the only ones I had any memory of. I really liked both Farmer Giles and Smith--Smith, especially (partly because of its bittersweetness!). (edited) 3mo

Daisey @TheAromaofBooks @BarbaraJean I know I‘ve read these before, but I didn‘t remember them well and enjoyed their differences so much! 3mo
BethM This was my first time. I think I liked Farmer best. Short stories are just generally not my jam 😂 2mo
Daisey @BethM I‘m with you on the short stories. I tend to want more detail. 2mo

I thoroughly enjoyed my reread of this story! Giles is a farmer who gets pushed into being a hero in this story. I was actually more entertained by the dog and the dragon than the human characters.

BethM I am just meeting the dragon and I would agree! 3mo
Andrea313 Garm is the real hero, tbh. 3mo
TheAromaofBooks I also had an edition with Pauline Baynes's illustrations and thought they added so much to the story!! The dragon was totally my favorite character. 3mo

While reading “Farmer Giles of Ham” I had to look up this word. In this situation, the dragon is trying to bargain and promises to pay for a cenotaph or monument for the parson he ate.

cenotaph: (noun) a monument to someone buried elsewhere

Along with Tales from the Perilous Realm, I‘ve also got this book that includes the next two stories with illustrations by Pauline Baynes. I‘m looking forward to rereading these as I don‘t remember the details from the first time. I‘m starting Farmer Giles of Ham today!
